When it was time to cross over the see, he never said a word to Elisha. Because he (Elisha) was a great student who has good quality of paying attention. He observed a great change and have to sojourn the master.
They both crossed over the sea

He (Elijah) seeing this, turned and laughed at him(laughter of joy).
He knew, truly he has breed a great prophet. A person capable of taken his position.

Still on the attention, when Elijah was about to ascend to the sky.
Elisha took noticed of this and have to hold his cloak

He wanted to sojourn the master but missed the opportunity. Had he held the Master's hand, both of them could have gone.

He held the cloak and got a piece

The piece of Master's cloak was reason he could come back (crossing the sea) to meet with other young prophets
