The Anti fraud unit of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) has arrested 69 suspected fake members of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC).

The victims, 39 female and 30 male, including a nursing mother with a 3 month old baby, after spending about two to three weeks met their waterloo when a combine team of the NSCDC from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) command, Abuja and the Keffi Area command, Nasarawa State with the little information they had stormed their illegal orientation camp at Angwan Lambu, Keffi at about 2am on Monday morning, taking possession of every human being, including their properties.

Speaking shortly after parading them before the press in Keffi, Nasarawa state on Monday afternoon, the Commandant General, NSCDC, Dr. Ade Abolorin, who was represented by the Deputy Commandant General (DCG), Mr. Evans Ewurum, condemned the act and promised to investigate further and bring those agents who facilitated the crime to book to avoid future occurrences.

He stated that these culprits are the groups of people who decided to organise their own camp, and prepare their own uniforms through certain agents, with the aim of defrauding Nigerians.

Ewurum added that, he expected that anybody who is a graduate should be able to analyse issues and know when people are playing on their intelligence, saying that if the university from which they graduated has not given them call-off letters and then they didn't follow due process but decided to do it on their own, they should have themselves to blame for whatever comes out of it.

According to him, the NSCDC Commandant General has sworn to fight corruption in the country, assuring that he is not going to leave any stone unturned as his policy is to re-define the concept of security in this country. Some of the suspected fake NYSC members, who claimed to be from Federal Universities across the country, spoke to LEADERSHIP, saying that they were ignorant of the crime they committed.

Elizabeth Elijah, from the University of Calabar said "I was in this situation today because I did not know that the person who brought me is a fake agent. I was thinking am going to be in Kubwa camp in FCT, but unfortunately I found myself in Keffi where I thought I could get my NYSC Discharge Certificate", she stated.

Another victim, Easter Ammah from the University of Jos, Plateau state, revealed that she refused to listen to the advise from her school that they were not going to serve and luckily for her, she met one Saidu who helped her to get a call-off letter and she decided to think out this way as an alternative to get an NYSC Certificate because others have been doing the same.

Responding, the NYSC Director of operation, Mrs. Martha Midala, explained that such fraud has been on ground for quite some time now and is part of the ills that are going on in the society and NYSC is not a different organisation.

According to her, the NYSC have their own measures on ground on how to check this, saying that it was through their own measures that they were able to get the information about them. She warned the fraudsters who specialise in forgery and issuance of fake posting letters, urging the employers and the public to accept only corps members who presented genuine posting letters to their places of primary assignment.

The Director further revealed that the problem of fake NYSC members is a network arrangement and promised that it would soon be disconnected.

They should scrap that charade called NYSC. They are endangering the lives of Nigerian youths.  NYSC should be a complete Youth military service scheme. If it was a Youth Civil skill acquisition scheme, it would have been more productive.
As it is now, it looks like an avenue for youths to taste the national cake. That is why you see some youths ready to form their own fake NYSC scheme just to pretend as if they were getting a chunk of the national cake. Who no wan chop national cake?

The programme has outlived its usefulness. I personally witnessed unnecessary deaths to corpers on their way to camp and even on camp. But since it is a money spinning idea for organisers, they will never stop it.

69 Fake NYSC members arrested in a swoop sad sad sad? And to even think they were organising their own camp makes me shudder with fear and trembling. Personally, I feel the Youth Service scheme has outlived its usefulness. The living standards of Corpers continue to worsen every year. I have always suggested that the scheme should be restructured and the participants reduced. I served in 2005/2006 in Ondo State and till today, I don't know what I really gained from the Service Year. Yeah, I got to see different places in Ondo State and was a corps member of the NDLEA, but the development that came my way was self achieved. My Place of Primary Assignment refused to pay me and I had to rely on my 8,500 Naira monthly pay. I remember how I and two other Corpers managed to share a rented room throughout the year. We lived in Isolo, a very ghetto area of Akure.

When jobs and opportunities are hard to come by, there is now way we won't be having fake corpers. I'm not supporting the fraudulent corpers, but I feel the Government should support an enabling environment to ease things up for youths in the country. A report should be prepared on the NYSC and new rules should come in. Cheers.
