I believe no one here speaks in justification of the Op's actions; not especially me. Then again, from his narrative anyone can conclude that his attitude is one of regret. Being regretful of his wrongdoing does not exonerate him but it speaks of his attitude which indicates a resolution not to repeat that act. Someone willing to reform contributes to the welfare and security of the society. If anything I consider this as a step forward in the right direction.

For the record, criminal record is never a barometer for measuring the morals of a person, especially when one considers the fact there there are tons of peeps with criminal records who are innocent of the crimes they were accused of while the real criminals roam free till today. This doesn't say anything about your morals. You may be a husband snatcher who causes grievous harm to a woman's children by depriving them of their father's attention, love, care and resources. Being a husband snatcher is not a crime that is actionable in law as to attract a criminal record but it is no less worse than a paedophile...
