Residents allege al-Qaeda inputs as crisis rages in Kano
Residents of Panshekara, the flashpoint of Tuesday's clash between Moslem fanatics and the police in Kano, which left no fewer than 21 policemen dead, have alleged that those that perpetrated the act were members of the Al-Qaeda Islamic organisation. They were said to have sneaked into Kano at about 3 a.m. on Tuesday A resident, Mallam Aminu Bashir recalled the modus operandi of the militants saying: "They speak Hausa, English, and Arabic. Some of them look like Sudanese, some like Chadian and some like the people of Maiduguri. They should be up to 500 and their age range between 20 and 40. There were also their children and their wives who carry AK 47 riffles. They initially delivered 30 minutes to an hour lecture and they said there was a time Mallam Jafar was killed in his mosque. Then they say that there was another Imam that was killed too. So, they say why, is it there is no security in Nigeria. Why can this happen and election would take place?" The Guardian gathered that the fight was still raging on Wednesday as more soldiers were being deployed from Kaduna to Kano to restore normalcy.
