Jonathan’s Former Aide, Okupe, Gets N100m Bail by Okwyla: 7:37am On Jan 15, 2019
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja yesterday granted bail to Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former Senior Special Assistance to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, in the sum of N100 million.

Okupe, who was dragged to the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), is facing a 59-count charge bordering on money laundering involving several millions of naira.

Justice I.L Ojukwu, who granted the bail, ordered the suspect to produce one surety in like sum.

The judge ordered that the surety must have landed properties within the jurisdiction of the court.

He also ordered that the accused person must deposit his international passports with the court’s Registrar.

Granting the defendant’s application for bail, Justice Ojukwu held that the court possessed the discretion in granting bail, which must be exercised judicially and judiciously.

Ojukwu then adjourned the case to February 27, 28 and March 6 for trial.

The accused had pleaded not guilty to the charges when it was read to him.

According to the details of charges the accused had, between August 3, 2012, and October 8, 2014, in Abuja, allegedly used different companies to commit the offenses.

After the change sheet was read ,counsel to the defendant, Tolu Babaleye, in application, prayed the court to grant the accused bail on liberal terms since he was still presumed innocent.

Objecting to the bail application, counsel to the EFCC, Ibrahim Audu, argued that the court should not grant the accused bail because he had jumped bail when he was granted administrative bail by the commission in 2016.

He said Okupe was later tracked to his country home in Lagos State last year by the commission.

Doyin Okupe was alleged to have diverted a total of N702 million, using accounts of his two companies, Value Trust Investment Limited and Abrahams Telecoms Ltd.
One of the counts read: “That you, Dr. Doyin Okupe, being the Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan from July 2012 to May 2015, and being the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, and a signatory to the bank account of Abrahams Telecoms Ltd, on or about October 3, 2014 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, directly took possession or control of N35 million, transferred to the account of Abrahams Telecoms Ltd from the account of the Office of the National Security Adviser with the Central Bank of Nigeria, purporting to be for special services when you reasonably ought to have known that the said fund formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful activity.”

Lets get done with this issue.
If found guilty, let him face the consequences of his fraudulent actions, if not guilty, let us move on to the pressing matters at hand.
We rise!

Reading this type of news always makes my heart feeble. A country like Nigeria doesn't have a central database where it's citizen's information is stored.

Yesterday, the past administration brought in NIMC, I go do regeisteration since 2014, since then I never receive the ordinary nonsense common ID card. Something that should be done in minutes.

Today, they said we should get BVN, useless people, some have two BVNs. I am not bluffing, people have 2 BVNs.

Today again kwa, they will be regeistering people to check if they are eligible to vote, they will still tell us to go and register.

All those register this register that, our tax money will be waaterd on one single job just because some people are busy embezzling money and reiterating the process.

I have not seen the need to have a BVN, NIMC, and also PVC, thunder fire all our current leaders past and present..

In this mumu country, we all are selfish. Stoopid youths will be hailing Buhari and Atiku...useless touts...

Why can't we reject those guys and find a way to make out nation great....we have all it takes.

Okupe that should at least spend some time in prison is giving a bail of 100m, money that he stole....God have mercy on us all.. angry cry

I know you have chosen to remain ignorant but please keep it to yourself and within your family.

For the last time, let it sink into your skull that Ganduje enjoys immunity just like Fayose enjoyed his. Once Ganduje vacates his seat as governor, his case will surely be treated.

Not bad development...lots of them are criminal but picking only the opposition to trial is unfair and seem like a synergy by the present administration to blackmail politicians into coming over to the other side.

read up on the term "immunity" in the context of governance in Nigeria.

Moreover, i will like you to ask you why Fayose had to wait till after his tenure before visiting EFCC

A waste of Government resources.. Efcc is a joke, how did the come to the total of 702m if it's only 35m they were able to mention? Why give someone 100m bail? That's how they will drag and waste time at the end of the day there wont be enough evidence to sentence him.. everything is just wrong with this country

They want to keep him out of circulation too.

Deji Adeyanju languishing in jail for a case he was DISCHARGED AND ACQUITTED by the courts.

Dino in custody and security details withdrawn, while Oluomo is being protected by the police.

Okupe being persecuted, while Babachir, Orji Uzor Kalu, Obanikoro, Omisore, Amaechi, Oshi-omoh-OLE, are campaigning for Buhari.

May 29th will mark the end of tyranny in Nigeria.

No money is paid when bail is granted by a court. What the surety executes is a bond that he will forfeit the bail sum to the court or go to jail if he fails to produce the accused person at any adjourned date during the accused person's trial.

Why are you partisan of bad governance.
It irks me when I see your messages all over the place. Nigerians keep fighting to run away to other countries because of bad management here. You are supporting incompetence, evil and have sold your soul for materialistic things. Remember that yesterday's 504 and hummer are today's trash. Posterity will never forgive you for misleading young minds on this forum. People are dying everyday due to bad management of the country. Whatever you do shall boomerang, just watch and see. May your generations be run the way Buhari is running Nigeria. You better repent and support any of the alternatives
