Chapter One.

Portharcourt 11.25 pm

The midnight silence was rattled by the reverberation of the Beretta.

Tega cursed, knowing that had he steadied his arm a little, before squeezing the trigger, then his target would have been made. But again, it’s quite a task running  and making a clean shot.

Ese kept up to speed. “Lucky ”, He said, “But not  for long”.

The bullet had whisked past the young man and cut down a fragile branch at par with his head. If there was any intervention from instant doom, then that was it. He could have stopped to give thanks but knew that he might not be so lucky from a second shot. He had to act fast; he was a sitting duck on a straight path.

He made a left turn and kept going, He looked back, but the sounds of cracking twigs, told him that his assailants were still on his tail. Tired and lost in the dense Niger Delta forest, He made a demand upon his weary legs to take more strides.

Ese  pulled out a piece from his coat - a . 44 magnum, determined to end this annoying chase once and for all. He was become tired and knew that The Boss was intolerant with mistakes; he had seen the various forms of punishments meted out to his colleagues. Sometimes the whole family gets it.

He quickly jogged his mind back to the chase and tried to focus. He had to rectify the first shot gone wide. No mistakes, not this time.

The lad jumped across a dead log, and made a swift sharp turn. He looked back but saw a silhouette of just one man. A 'click' caused him to look straight and stop abruptly- Ese, standing right in front of him.

The midnight silence was rattled again.
