The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) says Nigerian Muslims should object to the use of body scanners at the country’s international airports because it violates their human and religious rights.

MPAC’s Director of Media and Communications Mallam Disu Kamor said yesterday that the scanners should not be used on Muslims because they would expose naked bodies which would then be seen on a monitor by another person.

Mallam Kamor said though Muslims agree that airports must be made un-friendly to terrorists but due to the explicit nature of the pictures that the body scanners bring out, they believe that “government’s choice of the measure without due public consultation is unacceptable.”

According to him, in Islam the right to privacy includes the right to decide who views your body, whether in person or via images.

He said the fact that the screener is unable to identify the passenger does not change the fact that he or she is viewing a near naked image of the passenger, adding that by forcing the passenger to go through the body scanner he/she is being stripped of his/her privacy and his/her right to decide who takes and views his/her near nude images.

The MPAC’s director, in a statement made available to Daily Trust, said the Quran commands Muslims, both men and women, to cover their private parts; as such the enforcement of nudity under the guise of maintaining air passenger safety and security was unacceptable.

Mallam Kamor said a pat down search would be just as effective in finding explosives strapped to the body instead of body scanning.

He said: “The use of the body scanners produce detailed 3-D images of passengers’ figures on a computer screen as if they were unclothed and the MPAC objects their use”, he said.

And, so what? Muslims aren't the only ones that have complained; the ACLU complained about the same thing and they've been shown to be right about TSA workers looking at scanned images and making inappropriate comments. One airport worker went as far as to physically assault a coworker because his third leg was shown to be a thimble on the scanner.

All that aside, it's a necessary evil that most (including myself) support. Don't like, don't fly. I'm not trying to hear about your feelings and rights to modesty when everyone has go through the scanners.

Umaru Mutullab would have said the same thing. Infact, he would have preferred that there is no security at the airports at all grin

Re: Muslim Groups Oppose Use Of Body Scanners At Airports by desgiezd(m): 1:25pm On Aug 27, 2010
Must people complain just for the sake of complaining? The issue of the use of full body scanners came about through the inglorious act of Abdumuttalab, a Nigerian. Is it not an irony that those complaining now are also Nigerians?

Like someone said earlier, its not by force to travel by air, canoe paddling is an alternative. This is because passengers on large cruiser ships may soon be subjected to full body scanners.

@Complainers

Pray that none of your people blows or attempts to blow up an aircraft in the next ten years, who knows, governments all over the world may change their minds on this measure. undecided

they can always walk to Mecca, after all, the holy prophet Mohammed(s.a.w) walked from Medina to Mecca.
Re: Muslim Groups Oppose Use Of Body Scanners At Airports by Remii(m): 6:55am On Aug 28, 2010
I think the group needs to get more infomation on the mode of operations on the scanner. The viewer would not see naked body. They should take this the same way they take medical visits, Allahu alam.
Re: Muslim Groups Oppose Use Of Body Scanners At Airports by Jakumo(m): 7:06am On Aug 28, 2010
This is a prefect opportunity for radical fundamentalist Muslims to vote with their feet by remaining in their goat-herding villages for the rest of their natural lives.  To further guarantee that mummified Muslim women are not spotted scurrying about in their asinine Batman costumes, all females so dressed should be encouraged to confine themselves inside their mud huts till they die of natural causes or old age.

With the above simple measures, the twin concerns of visual pollution AND of security in the civilised world could be remedied by one simple expedient -  HIDE ALL THE TALIBAN GOONS, forever.

Re: Muslim Groups Oppose Use Of Body Scanners At Airports by Jakumo(m): 5:17am On Aug 29, 2010
Considering the extreme lengths that Islamic societies go to humiliate women by hiding them away in their shuttered homes AND in hermetically sealed masquerader outfits, the very notion of an Islamic beauty contest strikes me as patently absurd.  Surely, a more appropriate contest for such repressive, backward-thinking people would be a men's Bin Ladin look-alike contest, or a decapitation contest to see who can sever an infidel's head with the cleanest cut

If women are not regarded in Islamia as worthy of owning a driving licence, or of being seen in public with a  male non-relative, or of sharing a bus with males, then surely there is no point whatsoever in conducting beauty contests in such societies that are so obviously angered, uncomfortable and ashamed over their women folks very existence.   One wonders why they don't simply deport all women away from such female-hating cultures, so that all those stern faced, long-bearded prophet-wanna-be wankers can turn on each other for sexual and sadistic gratification.

LOL and here I thought tpia was just messing around. so that is really a beauty contest. so much for "has to be photohopped".
