My name is Chukwuebuka Anisiobi and I am the winner of the very first spelling bee contest held in 2001. I attended the Maryland Comprehensive High School in Ikeja I represented my school at the local government level of the spelling bee competition which was actually a science quiz. I won the science competition and this qualified me to represent my local government at the district level of the grand finale of the spelling bee competition.

I won a grand prize of N100 which was kept in a trust for me until I turned 18. After winning the competition, I acted as a "one day Governeor" of Lagos State and I was also sponsored on an exhcange trip to Finland for five weeks.

Mrs Remi Tinubu has remained very close to me well after winning the competition. I received a scholarship from her foundation- The New Era Foundation for my university education. I also got a recommendation from Mrs. Tinubu which helped me secure admission at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife where I was admitted to study Computer engineering.

She also personally attended leadership summits I organized as president of Junior Chamber International, a non-governmental organisation in the Obafemi Awolowo University. She donated money to help sponsor an indigent child- Miss. Kafayat Abidogun from primary school up to university. She also attended my graduation ceremony at the Obafemi Awolowo University.

I also accompanied Mrs. Tinubu on official trips to the Ministry of Education and Sports to meet the respective Ministers to discuss the possibility of making some initiatives of the New Era Foundation- The spelling bee and wheel chair tennis competition, nation- wide competitions.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu donates $20,000 to Nigerian students in UK


Senator Remi Tinubu has donated 20,000 US dollars (N3.2 million) as take-off fund to assist Nigerian students studying in various universities in the United Kingdom.

Tinubu made the donation on Saturday in London at an award ceremony organised by the Association of Nigerian Academics UK (ANAUK).

The lawmaker, who was recognised for her ‘Outstanding Contribution to Education in Nigeria’, stressed the need for the association to set up a fund to assist students with tuition and other challenges.

She said her donation was a take-off fund, and appealed for more support for the association and other bodies. “This award being bestowed on me today will help renew my commitment in youth empowerment, and will inspire others to do more for the improvement of the society.

Continuing its efforts at ensuring that its beneficiaries are properly rounded, New Era Foundation its youths on a cultural exchange programme to Finland. The youths, mostly past winners and runners-up of its Spelling Bee Competitions were given the chance to travel out and engage with youths at Finland. Here are pictures from their 2017 visit.
