Good news for Lionel Messi but bad news for Ronaldo
Barcelona have been handed a huge boost after Lionel Messi returned to training ahead of derby clash against Espanyol but rival Cristiano Ronaldo is not so lucky as Juventus confirmed he will miss the next three Serie A games.

Both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo returned for their national team respectively after about eight months away from international duty. The two football icons haven’t played for their national teams since Portugal and Argentina went out of the World Cup last year.

However, they both made their return during the last international break but it was shortlived. The duo picked up injuries in the game against Venezuela and Serbia respectively which made them major doubts for their club’s games.

However, Barcelona has revealed Lionel Messi’s injury is not that serious and has returned to training. But Ronaldo will have to miss Juventus next three domestic games.

According to Corriere della Sera (h/t Calciomercato), the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will sit out Serie A games against Empoli, Cagliari and AC Milan in a bid to be fully fit for Juve’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg against Ajax on April 10.

And the Old Lady then officially confirmed that tests had revealed “a minor injury to his right thigh flexors,” per Sky Sports News. The Italian champions will take no risks on returning him in the league, though, as they hold a 15 point lead at the top of Serie A.

Even if Ronaldo were to miss the rest of the season, Juve could still likely secure their eighth consecutive Scudetto. But others, notably Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala, will have to step up while Ronaldo is sidelined after they suffered a first league defeat of the season last time out against Genoa when the former Real Madrid man was being rested.

Ronaldo’s key purpose for the rest of the campaign will be to help Juve win the Champions League for the first time since 1996.

Meanwhile, Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi has resumed training with the team. Barcelona will play local rivals Espanyol in the Catalan derby on Saturday when club football resumes, followed by a trip to Villarreal on Tuesday.

The Blaugrana should be capable of beating sides who respectively sit 13th and 17th in La Liga even without their captain, but whether he features or not, the club will be eager to ensure he’s in top condition for the fixtures that follow
