Lagos state is a major gateway into Nigeria. Most visitors to the country come in through the state.

Thus, the first impression that most international visitors behold of Nigeria is provided by Lagos state.

Sadly, an uncomplimentary sight that greets visitors to Nigeria is the ubiquitous sights of open and dirty drainages all over Lagos state. For decades, open and dirty drainages have been a prominent feature of roads and streets in Nigeria's commercial capital.

Successive governments in Lagos state – despite the enormous fiscal resources at their disposal – have failed to eradicate this outdated infrastructure.

Since the return of democracy in 1999,  successive administrations in the state have been actively pursuing an agenda to achieve the status of a world-class metropolis. Sadly, the sight of open drainages makes a huge joke of this ambition.

No city in the world that sincerely desires to be taken seriously leaves its drainage system exposed, to the extent that the inhabitants now use them as alternatives to refuse dumps.

Lagos state is considered as the 7th biggest economy in Africa.

Come May 29th, Lagos state will have a new governor.

Will Babajide Sanwo-Olu offer a solution to this long term failure of governance in Lagos?

Only time will tell.

shocked open drainage system is the best for now, we don't use sealed drainage when we are yet to get all our roads tarred ....we just need to do constant sanitation and reduce the number of stores in irrelevant places

Why should we still have open drainage? It should be covered with slabs.

The Governor should attach incentive to the disposal of used PET bottles and pure water sachets. Collect and go drop off at designated spots in each neighbourhood and get point, of which should be linked to the collector's phone number and the accumulated points could be used to redeem items at the project's partners stores, it can always be fine tuned.

The Government recycle the waste to produce products such as these.

while constructing this roads its surprising that it was never put into consideration to cover them, when those that are suppose to inspect it are busy with their legs crossed on their office table.

Something is wrong with the country at large. Lagos a role model state will set up drainages yet we that will benefit from it will block it. For us to get better we need a change of mindset. Thank autojosh by d way

YOU'RE WRONG.

YOU DON'T WAIT FOR ALL YOUR ROADS TO BE TARRED BEFORE YOU COVER YOUR DRAINS AND BUILD SIDEWALKS FOR PEDESTRIANS. I'M STUNNED BY YOUR SUGGESTION.

Everywhere is smelling these days. I cant even walk for 3 minutes without holding my breath. I pray he cleans up lagos and also free up the roads from parked tankers. If he achieves this without anything else, i’d rate him above Ambode already

Where is the open gutter here?

Until we start to build our streets like THIS, with sidewalks and covered drains, we will continue to be a JOKE, and our cities dirty, stinking eyesores which no tourist in their right mind would visit.
