Some of you would recall that about three weeks ago, there was a post here on Facebook by Maazi Ogbonnaya to the effect that a student was being unfairly delayed by his supervisor from graduating to join his peers in the National Youth Service.

Being alarmed, the institution set up a team to investigate the matter. Below is the report of the investigation. (Social media is not the best of places to bring these sorts of issues. However, the decision to bring the findings of the team to social media is informed by the fact that it was to social media that the matter was brought out first.)

REPORT OF THE BOARD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF
SOCIOLOGY & ANTHROPOLOGY ON MR NNAEMEKA
OFOEGBU’S SOCIAL MEDIA COMPLAINT ABOUT Difficulty IN HIS PROJECT WRITING

The attention of the Board was drawn to a story on Nairaland https://www.nairaland.com/5141686/dr-n-osadebe-unn-lecturer, a social media platform, titled;
“Dr N. Osadebe: UNN Lecturer Victimizing Final Year Student Exposed”, dated 18 April 2019.

Given that this was the first time the Board of the Department or any other office in the entire University of Nigeria was informed of any grouse that Mr Ofoegbu held against his Supervisor, the Board quickly began to investigate the matter. Mr Ofoegbu and his other peer narrated how Dr Osadebe had been reading their projects thoroughly to ensure it became of good quality.

Indeed, to the surprise of the Board, Mr Ofoegbu said he had almost a father-son relationship with Dr Osadebe and would never have intentionally sought to defame him. On further probe, he revealed it was a friend ( Maazi Ogbonnaya ) whom he innocently complained to about his difficulty in finishing his project that took the story to social media in a way that presented his supervisor, and by extension, the institution that he works for, in bad light.

A fair journalistic practice would have impelled the reporter to also hear his Supervisor’s side of the story. As against the wrong information given in the story that Mr. Ofoegbu’s project was holding him from graduating to join his peers in the Youth Service, the student himself admitted that he was also grappling with other courses he had failed.

After hearing from Dr Osadebe, Mr Ofoegbu and the other final year student also being supervised by Dr Osadebe, it was clear that no case of victimization could be fairly held against the Supervisor. The Board, therefore, resolved that to assuage Dr Osadebe, Mr Ofoegbu would be directed to request his friend, through whom the story went to social media, to write a rebuttal on the same Nairaland stating that he did not see all sides of the story before posting it on social.

In our view it seems grossly unfair, maybe even unethical, that a wholesale condemnation of Nigeria’s university system should be based on a workaday practice respected worldwide where a Supervisor is merely performing his role of ensuring that a student’s project attains an acceptable standard.

CC:lalasticlala your attention is drawn to this article posted on this forum last month about a lecturer from UNN.(https://www.nairaland.com/5141686/dr-n-osadebe-unn-lecturer). This writer has come to clear the air on what transpired between the lecturer and the student. It will be useful to all if this information gets to front page.

It is ALWAYS good to hear the 2 sides of the story before jumping to conclusion.
Only fools jump to conclusion after listening to just a side of a story.
Many such people abound here.

Very good, mature and responsible decision from the school.

The Board, therefore, resolved that to assuage Dr Osadebe, Mr Ofoegbu would be directed to request his friend, through whom the story went to social media, to write a rebuttal on the same Nairaland stating that he did not see all sides of the story before posting it on social.
The attention seeking friend (Maazi Ogbonnaya) and darealbabe that brought the news to Nairaland should do the needful ASAP.!

You now see the danger of single story. It's nice the school responded to the allegations.

Sharp guy, fear of victimisation and intimidation made this fellow changed his statement.well the guy can be categorized as a student struggling academically, if it were to be in a private institutions he would have been given all the necessary help he will be needing.

Lol. Possible plot twist: the initial story might actually be true but the department exercised their authority to bring up this damage control.

After the post was published on nairaland front page, NUC and other stakeholders mandated the school to set up a panel to investigate the issue. As this was going on, Maazi was called to be lobbied which he refuse to honour their invitation and lobby. He was begged not to tarnish the image of the lecturer and the rest.

Following his refusal to do as they please, the student was made to accept that maazi published a wrong information about the case. And he was made to bring the post to same nairaland.

This is the reason this country will never get better.

Bros stop saying what you don't know.

This is a clear case of the school trying to protect their image and cover the lecturer. Go to the first thread and see the reviews of people who knew the lecturer and his ways.

This is what some Jobless Nairaland user do most of the time. They will go to someone's Facebook or other social media, copy some pictures and comments and bring them to nairaland with a caption, " A Facebook user"

You discuss things with your pal, next, he would go to social media and start with, "one of my friend", and start talking what you never discussed with him just to attract comments and traffic.

I believe that student must have discussed his project ordeals in an informal setting with that his supposedly stupid friend but the friend will couch the story somehow to suit his taste and post online without even informing the friend he was going to post the story online.

Social media is causing a lot of havoc and people need to learn.

It doesn't end at accusations, do you have proofs to back up your claims? wink

Nairalanders are quick to believe any posts, some idióts would have rained curses on the lecturer, as well as the university by just holding to the claims someone put up on Nairaland. Nairaland! Naira-fùcking-land! Like it's a news source.

Another trend is what people now do twitter, they get 'bad' services from companies and instead of following the proper channel (complaining to customer service) they resort to defaming the company's name. Shame!

Spot on. Was it not how the LAUTECH story trended? A story I had seen like 4 years ago, popping up again by another twitter user telling tales that never happened. Why? Just to garner followers and become useless media 'influenzas'!
