Referee: F De Bleeckere (Belgium).

Touchline duel
Carlo Ancelotti v Didier Deschamps

The Marseille manager is assured of a warm welcome at Stamford Bridge, the ground he graced for a season in the twilight of his career, despite his last return resulting in Chelsea's elimination from the Champions League at the semi-final stage at the hands of Deschamps' Monaco side. He will face a familiar opponent in the shape of Ancelotti on this occasion, too.

Though the Frenchman left Juventus for Chelsea as the Italian arrived at the Stadio Delle Alpi as manager in 1999, he faced his Parma sides on several occasions as a player.

Talking tactics
Marseille's home defeat to Spartak Moscow in the opening round of fixtures means they must at the very least avoid defeat here if they are not to lose touch with the Russian side. To do that, they must look to shut down Didier Drogba - far easier said than done, given the Ivorian-s form - though Manchester City showed at the weekend that, faced with a well-organised defence and a packed midfield, Chelsea can be stifled.

Deschamps is likely to name a five-man midfield, just as Roberto Mancini did, while Ancelotti will hope to exploit Marseille's occasionally shaky central defence.

Head to head
Michael Essien v Lucho Gonzalez

The Argentine is the heartbeat of Marseille's midfield, thanks to his quick passing, boundless energy and intelligent distribution, while Essien is far more than simply the lungs of Chelsea's. In the continued injury-enforced absence of Frank Lampard, the Ghanaian will be asked to drive the hosts forward from midfield as well as starving Gonzalez of possession, thereby cutting off the French champions' main creative outlet.

What they are saying:
Florent Malouda: "Marseille will be a difficult one because if you look at the recent years the French teams have done well in the Champions League.

"Last year they had two teams in the last eight. It is big for Marseille, they were champions last year and were waiting a long time, so they will want a good start. They won't want to come to Stamford Bridge and lose 4-0 like Bordeaux did two years ago. I can tell you it will be difficult in both games. Over there it is a big atmosphere but we are used to that."

Didier Deschamps: "Returning to Stamford Bridge will give me great pleasure. Although the stadium itself is renovated and much bigger, the wonderful ambience which I experienced remains. English grounds always seemed full and at the Bridge there were always families in the stadium and a great match atmosphere. But Chelsea now have a very competitive European team with something like 20 internationals - a great compensation if you have injured or suspended players."

Can someone tell me why Sturridge gets a spot ahead of Kakuta? For three games running, the dude (D.S) has been out of sorts. He likes to make a

bit more touches on the ball than expected and in the end, loses the ball to his opponent with a very poor recovery rate.

If he starts from the bench, he'll know that he needs to up his game.

I'm not enjoying what is looking like a 'losing streak', we need to win this one, by hook or by crook, or a combination of both. lol

. . .kakuta is a fringe player and he might not be able to play perfectly for 90mins hence he's a sub, same thing applies to josh mceachran.

. . . No his agility is needed, his physical presence will be a great advantage in the absence of drogba

Listen to yourself

How on earth is Sturridge better than josh and kakuta talent wise. alternatively, what has sturridge done to justify a place in the starting line up ahead of

his main competitions?

He has featured in gazillion games and I can only point to one game, community shield, as his best and only impressive performance so far

Josh on the otherhand has impressed in his 2 or 3 appearances for the senior team and kakuta, eventhough had a stinker against Newcastle,

has abundance of talent which sturridge could only ever dream of.
