Buhari's ethnic and religious bigotry will destroy Nigeria.

Here is a man building a Transport University in his village of Daura but denying Niger Delta a Maritime University

Or is he secretly planning to transfer Maritime University to merge with the Daura Transport University?

Tomorrow, when militancy resumes ...
I Dont know the kind of demon inside of all those die hard buhari supporters

Those are the exact Bills that could propel Nigerians to the richest in Africa. How can a President not know that Education and Molecular biotech sectors that every country makes as priority?

This is the reason a country should never have an illiterate as President.

Before any sensible comment can be made on this issue, we need to first know the details of the funding source which the presidency cited as the problem.

His reason for refusal sounds right.

To be honest what do we need more universities for? The thousands of graduates falling out every year cannot be accommodated and you want to add to it.

The educational sector needs to be revamped. Stop building universities and upgrade the ones we have to standard world class institutions.

Most world class institutions aren't government funded they are private and cost a load of dough to go through. We like mediocrity in this country. Half baked crap everywhere

Withholding assent to institute of Biochemist and Molecular biologist is a very bad idea.

Our education sector needs total reformation. Rather than adding more institutions, upgrade the existing ones to the word standard. It is not by number, it is by quality.
U r correct especially concerning de issue of this specialized universities.De people of Niger Delta pleaded with president Goodluck Jonathan to upgrade de only existing federal Maritime institution in de country est.since 1978( Maritime Academy of Nigeria,Oron,AKS) to a Maritime University. But he refused.Instead he went n established a new maritime University in Okorenkoko. If he had listen to de voice of de people,by now,de University in Oron wud av started a degree program. It wud av also been cost effective for fed.gov cos facilities are already on ground. It was just upgrading that was needed.

You mean those that have been cursing him for years?

Since the creation of Rivers state, Amaechi has been the best governor bar none, and what does he get in return? Curses every day.

In 2015, many of you were against his emergence as minister. For 4 years, all you've done is deride him.
When he sought loans for rail lines, many of you harangued and barked at him, saying no loan should be given.

He was able to finance a loan for the sw.

The rail is there for all to see.

Continue with your bring him down attitude.

He would be re-employed as a minister in this new cabinet and he would work diligently.

Make no mistake, he would not stick his neck out for ingrates and traducers.

I support the president's decision, too many universities in the country. University degree in Nigeria igeria has been watered down to School certificate O level. The National assembly should stop the establishment of new Universities in Nigeria.

Buhari once banned Nigerian Medical Association because the likes of Dr Beko Ransome-Kuti who were activists as military head of state. So why should Biochem and MolBio institute ban surprise anyone? He knows fully well that Southerners will benefit more from it.

Biochemists have won more Nobel Prizes in Medicine or Physiology than any other basic scientists.
But how will Buhari know? shocked

You never cease to amaze everyone on this forum with your level of bigotry.

Have you tried to weigh the benefit of such an institution against the supposed attendant cost. The maritime sector is a very huge income generating sector that has not been scratched by the Nigerian government and this university will generate the skilled labour that can help us to do that and yes, globally universities can be self-funding, that is if they are up and running and in this case, it requires government funding to do so before it can source it's own funds. They can source for ₦100 billion to pay Fulani herdsmen but cannot do so to invest in education.

By the way, education is a huge capital investment and no serious government shies away from it, except an unserious one like Buhari's government.

It’s either you’re poorly educated and don’t understand my post and the president’s submission or you’re being plainly mischievous. The maritime university is already operating and nobody is against it as government is already funding its operation. The bill is to give it a strong legal backing and nothing else. We cannot keep creating rent seeking institutions simply because we think we have so much money. The university will be funded just like any other university without a special arrangement to milk other government agencies.

He didn’t withhold assent because there are too many universities already. He refused to sign the bill because of the excessive funding provisions which will affect the operations of other government agencies and institutions. I have not seen the details of the bill but from previous bills passed by the 8th assembly, I can bet the bill attempts to charge various agencies in the maritime sector about 1-5% of annual revenue as contribution to the university.

The National Assembly by now should have learnt that Buhari will not sign any bill that attempts to create a rent seeking institution. 21st century universities should be designed in such a way as to be self funding and not to be rent seeking.

You are right, Universities should be self funding

What on earth can Amaechi point to as his legacy in Niger Delta as Transport Minister?

The maritime University is up and running already and should be self funding
