As new governors settle for duties after inauguration, the likelihood of some states defaulting on the new minimum wage is getting clearer by the day. Sunday Ojeme reports https://www.newtelegraphng.com/2019/06/minimum-wage-crisis-looms-in-states-over-execution/ |

Nigeria Runs a non economically feasible Civil Service *Ministry of Works in all states and FG hires Engineers and other workforce to over bloat its payroll yet Issue out all construction works to Chinese Engineering and Construction company *We have Ministry of water resources with thousands of staffs across the federation, yet every body buys portable water or construct their own boreholes while the ministry workers goes to secteraite to gossip and play around. *NNPC and DPR highers workers periodical, and has one of the highest salary and allowance of any cadre of workers yet they contract supply of petroleum products, they contract refinery and even contracts mining of crude *We have schools that cant even justify their annual budget by executing a research project or at least producing Innovative Graduates 37 Likes 3 Shares |

foolish people, crisis won't emerge when they increase thier political office allowance and entitlements. And governor or law maker that plans to stand against minimum wages in Nigeria will die suddenly. Amen 4 Likes 1 Share |

Only way states can pay minimum wage is by raising TAXES....or taking loans. Nigeria needs oil to be at $140 per barrel before we can earn enough cash to fund our budget. Since 2014...oil has been below $80. Inasmuch as workers need a raise ....the truth is, no governor is going to be able to afford this new minimum wage....unless they sack excess workers (And if you know what happened to Bisi Akande of Osun in 2003 .....you won't even try) So, either states sack workers, raise taxes, or take another loan from mama IMF. 9 Likes 1 Share |

Bossontop: In 2010...oil was at $100 and above. In 2018...oil has been below $70 per barrel Since Buhari took over, oil has been below $75, and at one time was as low as $30. That means we are not earning enough forex as we were in 2010....and the value of the naira falls. APC must go...but that does not solve our forex issue....unless we stop spending on subsidy for petrol and electricity. 8 Likes |

SETTINGZ0000000: Yes, our governors should reduce their salaries and entitilements. But the honest truth is that states need far more money than that to pay the minimum wage. |

Not surprised. The vast majority of states cannot afford to pay the minimum wage let alone private enterprises. Minimum wage on its own perpetuates unemployment, poverty, deprives people at the bottom of opportunities and escalates inflation. It's not a good policy and should be scrapped. Moreover, in the case of Nigeria, states not the federal government should peg the MW they (both civil service and private enterprises) can afford to their cost of living. Borno state and its private businesses cannot afford to pay 30K because of the divergence between its GDP and CoL whereas Lagos can do same. However, making it a blanket decision will further plunge these states into debt. 3 Likes |
