In an email sent to NEXT the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has asked all invited guests for the 50th independence anniversary activities at Eagle Square in Abuja to evacuate the area before 10:30 a.m Nigeria time.

MEND spokesman Jomo Gbomo claimed that several explosive devices had been successfully planted in and around the venue.

He warned that guests should keep a safe distance from vehicles and trash bins.

Re: Mend Threatens Bomb Attack In Abuja by Babyonche(m): 12:57pm On Oct 01, 2010
MEND no doubt has lost relevance in THEIR latent quest for nothing else,  rather than oil bunkering to fill their local and foreign accounts with hard-cold-dollars  once they are broke they issue out threats to get some cash and attentions.
MEND ,if u really want to bomb don't warn. just BLOW UP like real terrorists do. there was no warning before 9/11 in da USA, WHY WARNING IN 10/01 in NIG?

Nigeria independence celebration marred by blasts
breaking news

At least seven people have been killed in blasts in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, marring celebrations to mark 50 years since independence from the UK.

Two cars exploded outside the justice ministry after an earlier threat by oil militants to target the festivities.

The explosions were not heard at Eagle Square, where President Goodluck Jonathan was inspecting a guard of honour at the time.

Nigeria is a major oil producer yet most of the population live in poverty.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend), a militant group in the oil-rich south, issued a threat on Friday morning saying it intended to bomb the event.

If Mend are responsible for the blasts, it would be the first time that the group has targeted the capital.

Eyewitnesses say emergency workers are at the scene, moving bodies into vehicles.

"There are seven bodies, including a senior police officer," a police source told AFP news agency.
