The State executive committee has approved the commence of work for the permanent building of the Victor Attah international airport in Uyo, Akwa ibom state capital.
The decision was taken at the last executive meeting of the committee on 28 may 2019.
Announcing the decision of the committee, the state commissioner for Special Duty and Aviation Development mr Akan Okon disclosed that the terminal building will be a state of the arts terminal that will meet all international standards.
The terminal will be 20,000msq
Will accommodate 1200pax
Will have 6 Avio bridges.
Will have cargo handling facility inbuilt
And will have an apron that can accommodate the largest aircraft in the world.

Recall that passenger operation has been carried out from an interim terminal since the inception of commer ial passenger flight operations at the airport in 2008.

The airport which operates about 100 schedule flight a week with several airlines like Air peace, Dana air, Aero contractors, Al Naser Wings, bristow aviation etc also has the Newest Nigerian comercial airline ibom air using the airport as its permanent base.
This airport is one of the only 3 airports in the country that has a airline permanently based there.

With this development the airport has outgrown its interim terminal hence the need for expansion which will also boost cargo services at the airport.

In addition the MRO, building is also in the process of activation to offer routine maintenance for the aircraft in the west African sub region.

The building is expected to be completed within 24 months ,
was designed by Turkish architectural giant Fonksiyon mimarlik http://www.fonksiyonmimarlik.com/project-detail.php?p=1210-ni and will be built by the Turkish construction firm VKS construction. Who is also building the 21 story office building in uyo.

I like the design very simple and functional. Walk into a very spacious terminal hall, once checked in you go upstairs and wait for your flight to be announced.

Once announced you proceed to the gate and board your aircraft via and avio bridge.
Simple and fancy.

This is the kind of news people want to hear about Nigeria.

Nice one.

Ibom Air will have a nice, respectable base to operate from. smiley

Folks may not notice it, but Nigeria is gradually becoming a developed nation.

In most African nations they count these nice airports in ONES, or twos if they're lucky. In Naija we have the new world class Abuja airport, Murtala Miuhammed Airport Lagos which will become world class once the newly built Terminal 5 is opened. We have Port Harcourt International Airport looking really great, plus a few other mid-level, impressive airports at Kano, Kaduna, Enugu, Benin etc.

Infrastructurally, we are coming up.

Yes gradually. We will get there! I only wish that our leaders will stick to quality projects.

I expected more from the Chinese built airport terminals at enugu, kano,Lagos, portharcourt and Abuja.
But I guess they only gave what we paid for. Better than what we had before.

The simple but functional design looks like something the state gov't can handle...no trying to hang your coat where your hand can't reach!

I agree, am hoping that the alignment will be such that it will allow for future expansion of the terminal, without cause to pull this one down for expansion. ie ability to add new terminals to the existing building .

By rights, cities/towns like Uyo, Eket, Port Harcourt, Ohaji/Egbema, Omoku, Warri, etc, ought to be the best cities in the country! Their problems are both internal (local population and state gov'ts) as well as external (federal gov't)!

Compare oil-rich states abroad like Texas and the UAE to our own oil-rich states, and you'd weep for the black man!

One thing I can congratulate Udom on is this project. At least, he has tried. Only sad he should have started this earlier not he had trouble with Akpabio and had to go back to Obong Attah.

These are the things I l love to here about this great nation.

Please they should build it to world standard. At top 10 airport in Africa, I want Nigeria to occupy three or four spot just as Nigerians occupied three spots as the richest in Africa.

God Bless us All.

The reason why its easy for our leaders to be corrupt is that the people do not ask basic questions. The people do not hold their leaders to account. People are not asking who owns VKS. what is their track record? what jobs have they done in the past? Do they have the capacity to deliver such a project? How is an unknown company with just a small office in Uyo able to win a competative bid of a multibillion naira project if due process is followed. I have looked at the company website and viewed photos of their past jobs in the state. the Road they construct looks poor like NDDC kind of project. I expect the governor to look at the Goverment house he is occupying, that was built by the last administration, Barracks road, the stadium, the Ibom Hotel and golf. He should try and match these qualities or even surpase them. But from the projects he has completed so far, he is way behind.
