•Arewa wants judicial commission of inquiry on Abuja bombings

THE Niger Delta Restoration Initiative (NDRI), a coalition of socio-cultural groups in the Niger Delta region, has asked Mallam Adamu Ciroma and

some members of the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF), allegedly threatening to instigate the impeachment of President Goodluck Jonathan if he failed to resign his office by the end of one week over the twin bombings during the nation’s golden jubilee celebrations in Abuja to recant such statement.

According to the group, “the reports credited to Mallam Ciroma smacks of political indiscretion, recklessness, and brazen disregard for democratic ethos and the office of President and Commander-In-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. And the underlying motive is not far fetched: to plunge the nation into another round of tension and instability through fanning the embers of ethnic and religious sentiments aimed at discrediting the laudable leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan.”

Addressing a world press conference in Abuja, President-General of the group, Chief Pupagha Ekpedekumor, said: “In a bid to achieve their inordinate motives, Mallam Ciroma and his group are flying a kite of northern insecurity under a Jonathan presidency, citing alleged claims by Mr Henry Okah, an associate of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), that he had been contacted by a faceless aide of President Jonathan to implicate some northerners in the Friday bombings.”

He added that, “while we condemn the act in the strongest terms and call on the authorities to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to book, no matter how highly placed, we are at a loss on how it affects the safety of northerners to the extent of calling for the president’s head.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly the intelligence reports at the disposal of local and international security agencies prior to the bombings clearly indicated that it was indeed, a terrorist act.

“After a careful review of the position of the Northern Political Leaders Forum at an emergency meeting held today (Wednesday), in Abuja, the Niger Delta Restoration Initiative deemed it necessary to issue this press statement outlining our position on the issue:

“Though impeachment is a legitimate process in democratic governance, we in the South-South geopolitical zone view the statement credited to Mallam Ciroma and his group as a threat, which we shall resist through all available means. Some few individuals in a section of the country should not regard themselves as holding a birthright to the presidency, and should, therefore, refrain from gang-up and employing largely undemocratic means to destabilise the nation whenever people from other sections of the country assume positions of authority.

“Leadership is not a do-or-die affair. After all, since the existence of Nigeria as a political entity, people from the South-South have never tasted power at the presidential level; yet, they had never fought against the unity of our great country,” the group said.

Consequently, the group said, “we give Mallam Ciroma and his co-travellers a grace period of 48 hours within which to recant their statement and apologise to the presidency and the generality of Nigerians, or be ready to face the consequences. We are using this medium to warn these few individuals pretending to be protecting their people now, but did nothing to uplift their standard of living to act wisely and henceforth, be cautious in their actions and utterances.”

In another development, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), on Wednesday, called on the Federal Government to set up a high-powered judicial commission of inquiry into the bomb blasts which occurred in Abuja so as to ascertain the truth and effect retribution on offenders against future occurrences.

A communiqué issued in Kaduna signed by the ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Anthony Sani, after a meeting of the forum’s Board of Trustees, led by its chairman, Lieutenant-General Jeremiah Useni (rtd) and supported by the Secretary-General, Colonel Musa Shehu (rtd), resolved that having considered the claims and counter claims of those allegedly responsible for the dastardly act, setting up the commission of inquiry would also douse the mistrust and suspicion in the polity.

The ACF, however, welcomed the decision of the Federal Government to give the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) more time that would enable the commission to prepare and conduct credible, free and fair elections.

“However, the ACF frowns on any attempt by the presidency to take advantage of the situation to reintroduce the practices whereby political appointees would be automatic delegates in party congresses and conventions, as well as in party primaries.”

“It is still the position of ACF that in order not to confer undue advantage on incumbents, to create level-playing field and to enthrone internal democracies within political parties, all political appointees should not be automatic delegates as amended in the electoral act of 2010,”they said.

Useni is a sensible man. Where has that good man been? When he led Bendel state you can almost think a civilian government was in place just as he did with the FCT.
Leadeship skills are God given not the type of statement coming from CIROMA and his cronies.

Aljazeera or what is it called knows and are affiliates of them bombers.

They are known to be islamic fundamentalists' agents.

They are known to be the source through which all terrorists air their utterances and threats.

They are muslims, they are religious fanatics who will only work for their fellow islamists, they couldn't have supported president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan who is a christian.

QUESTION: What was the mission of aljaazera in Nigeria?

I want to believe that this impeachment threat is rather a joke.

What wrong has GJ has committed? It seems some of these power-hungry Northern politicians are running out of ideas.
