Ruga Settlement Is To Resolve Farmer/Herder Conflicts - Presidency by CGMedia: 9:06pm On Jun 30, 2019
The Presidency, on Sunday, said the proposed Ruga settlement is aimed at addressing the lingering farmer/herder clashes across the country, Igbere TV reports.

It was reacting to comments and controversies the plan had generated on social media in the past few weeks.

In a statement issued to Igbere TV by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity, he said;

“The Presidency wishes to draw attention to recent unhelpful comments regarding the plan to stop roaming of cattle herders with the attendant clashes with farmers.

“Ruga Settlement” that seeks to settle migrant pastoral families simply means rural settlement in which animal farmers, not just cattle herders, will be settled in an organized place with provision of necessary and adequate basic amenities such as schools, hospitals, road networks, vet clinics, markets and manufacturing entities that will process and add value to meats and animal products.

“Beneficiaries will include all persons in animal husbandry, not only Fulani herders.

“The Federal Government is planning this in order to curb open grazing of animals that continue to pose security threats to farmers and herders.

“The overall benefit to the nation includes a drastic reduction in conflicts between herders and farmers, a boost in animal protection complete with a value chain that will increase the quality and hygiene of livestock in terms of beef and milk production, increased quality of feeding and access to animal care and private sector participation in commercial pasture production by way of investments.

“Other gains are job creation, access to credit facilities, security for pastoral families and curtailment of cattle rustling.

“Stripped of the politics and howling that has attended the recent comments, there is no government plan to seize state land, colonize territory or impose Ruga on any part of the federation. Government has made it clear time and again that the programme is voluntary.

“So far, twelve states have applied to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, making lands available for the take-off of the scheme in their states. This number is sufficient for the pilot scheme. Unfortunately, some state governments that have not signified interest in the scheme and, therefore, are not on the invitation list have been misleading people that the Federal Government is embarking on a scheme to take away their lands.

“Mostly, these are state leaders that have no explanation to offer their people for continued non-payment of workers’ salaries. It is true that government at the centre has gazetted lands in all states of the federation but because the idea is not to force this programme on anyone, the government has limited the take-off to the dozen states with valid requests.

“We urge states to join the Federal Government at the centre in encouraging all sides to these conflicts to make efforts towards finding a peaceful resolution. As we seek a permanent solution to these unwanted conflicts, efforts must be made to ensure that no innocent person faces any kind of deprivation or loss of right and freedom under our laws.”

I have an Idea. Why dont the states that want Ruga take all their land, donate it to the Fulani and leave the rest of us alone. In fact, They can form their own Federal Republic of Ruga for all I care.

Read my solution to the Ruga Problem here: https://www.nairaland.com/5274422/only-way-resist-ruga-settlements

cattle rearing is a personal business of individuals. If the dealers fails to comply with relevant laws they should be dealth with as in any other businesses that operates in Nigeria. why should the federal government involve itself in some peoples business affairs to the extent of
investing a collective money of the nation into some personal businesses. why?

I wonder why cattle rearing should be a problem to the country when we have pig rearing, cat rearing, sheep rearing, goat rearing and even dog rearing and these never gave us issues. Why cattle?

APC shouldn't forget that SE and SS didn't vote for Buhari so we don't deserve it so they should please carry all the Fulanis and their families to South West cos they are the accommodators of Africa.

I miss Constituted authority he would've collected the N1 billion since, even Fulani herdsmen would've started work(killing) by now

This government still don't get it. It's penchant for treating the menace and atrocities allegedly perpetrated by the killer herdsmen with kid gloves has already irked people of the middle belt down to the Southern Nigeria. Hence any move by the government is treated with suspicion.

A government that raised an army to tackle cattle rustlers but couldn't raise a finger and thus become helpless against the marauding herdsmen has already set itself up for suspicion.

The expansionist idea didn't start today and only politicians from the South who wants to politically correct or benefitting or hoping to benefit from this government will support the RUGA thing down South. Alimi and Afonja come to mind.

With such avalanche of land in the North, the herders can have their RUGA in the North, produce their beef in the North and then export it down south like they do for pepper, tomatoes and fruits. Case closed, problem solved.

By the way, when is the Fulani Radio going to commence broadcasting? The RUGA should be complemented with schools, health care centers, and most importantly, polling units.

the fact is we can not allow people who have killed , destroyed our farms and rape us in our communities to build a barrack around us in disguise and name it Ruga, we dont even know the meaning of the word, you claimed the north have the largest land mass, yet you are still coming here, why not use the 2.5billion you budgeted for it to build dam in the north ?

thirdly, you are not controlling the border to even stop every other herdsmen from other countries from coming here to graze, if you can not control them now, how do you control them later in the future when they have already become our neighbors ?

we can not allow people moving around with AK47 to build station near us.
international communities should take note , Usman Dan Fidio experience still remain in mind , simply use the 2.5 billion to build Dams , you can not force us to accommodate fulani herdsmen , and Meytii Allah in our communities. photos of their atrocities committed is all over the internet!
you have only spent 30days on seat in your second term, is this your NEXT LEVEL? it's obvious this is premeditated .

why cant the FG allocated the same 2.5billion also for the Ijaw fishermen so we can have fish everywhere at affordable rate? afterall fresh fish is more healthier for consumption than red meat.
this is a trick to invade and seize peoples ancestoral land and give them to dangerous herdsmen forever

Cow rearing is a personal business

Giving out billions of money to herdsmen is sending a message.....

What about other businesses

This is how it is done in saner climes.

We remembered how we used to live as brothers as sisters in our darling nation with these same Fulani herdsmen.
The times we gave water and food to herdsmen journeying across the nation as they go on their business peacefully,
Just with their sticks and kettles for their prayers,
that was all before the evil and criminal minded politicians begun sponsoring some of them for evil because they want to remain in power forever.

Nigeria will be great again in our lifetime in Jesus name!
We believe in our darling President Muhammadu Buhari, a man after God's heart to always make the best decision for our darling nation to move forward.

May God Almighty continue to give you more wisdom. knowledge and understanding as you move our nation forward.

Children of hate and perdition, supporters of evil, you will all never end well.
No be curse, na fact!
