Ekiti: One Killed, Several Injured As Nurtw Factions Clash by Afanna1: 2:09am On Oct 18, 2010
[b]One member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Ekiti State was killed on Saturday in a violent clash which broke out between two factions of the union.

The clash was caused by an attempt by a faction of the NURTW to overthrow the Mr. Omolafe Aderiye-led leadership of the union.

While Governor Kayode Fayemi was being inaugurated on Saturday, members of the two factions of the union engaged themselves in a violent clash which resulted in the death of a driver whose name was given as Femi Aluko a.k.a Otunba.

It was gathered that the crisis started at a motor park in Textile area of Ado-Ekiti as some chieftains of the union who were allegedly expelled, attempted to fight back.

Our correspondent gathered from eyewitnesses that the deceased’s stomach was ripped open after he was stabbed. He had been allegedly beaten mercillessly and dragged on the floor by his killers.

Other victims escaped with injuries inflicted on them by the hoodlums who allegedly brandished dangerous weapons.

The chairman of the NURTW, while speaking with journalists, said that he had reported the incident to the police. He said that he mentioned the names of seven persons alleged to be behind the attack.

Aderiye said, “We have taken the dead person to the mortuary. Although those suspected to have carried out the attack have taken to their heels, the police have assured us that justice would be done and we believe that nothing contrary will happen.”

“We don’t want Ekiti State to be set on fire. We are a trade union and we do not engage in partisan politics.

Those people that were expelled were duly expelled. So, we don’t know why they want to drag us into politics. If government changes in the state, it shouldn’t be our concern. We support any government that God gives the people of the state.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Jimoh Mohammed who confirmed

the incident to our correspondent on the telephone said that the

police were after those who carried out the crime.

He said, “ We are aware of the incident we are investigating it.

Although we have not made any arrest but we are after those who

carried out killing.”

The PPRO warned against engaging in criminal activities saying that

the command would not hesitate to deal with anybody or group caught

fomenting trouble in the state.
