Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos state, has urged more residents to pay their taxes to enable the state government to carry out its developmental projects.

Sanwo-Olu gave the advice on Tuesday while answering questions on ‘The Platform Nigeria’, an event organised by The Covenant Christian Church Place, Iganmu, Lagos.

According to the governor, less than 700,000 out of 4.5 million taxable adults in Lagos are currently paying tax.

“We are not saying that we should increase tax, but we encourage people to be on the tax net,” he said.

“We are also appealing to our tax agency to be more proactive and reach out to people who are not paying tax.”

Sanwo-Olu appealed to Lagosians to be patient over the bad state of roads in the state, saying that continuous rainfall was slowing down rehabilitation and palliative work on the roads.

He assured that there would be extensive and massive rehabilitation of roads after the rainy season.

The governor said that state government was working on a multi-modal transportation system comprising rail, water transportation and bus transit system to remedy the traffic problem in the state.

”On water transportation, we are encouraging the building of a lot of jetties and we have just acquired six to seven new passenger boats that can take 60 to 70 passengers at a time,” he said.

On commercial motor-cycle operators, the governor said since his administration wanted to give everybody a chance to be part of the state development plan, he was trying to harmonise and come up with a regulation system.

”This is designed to know who they are, their activities and how to manage them to ensure that they don’t add to the problem of traffic flow in the state; we don’t want to disenfranchise anybody,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He said that through the ongoing Metropolitan Fibre Initiative of his administration, public institutions in the state, such as schools and hospitals, would have access to high-speed internet service.

Sanwo-Olu said that the initiative, which was technology enabler, would help to manage traffic and other security issues in the state.

That figure isn't correct, it's either the agency in charge of tax collection is not reporting the actual figure or the governor is been economical with the truth.
Almost all business in lagos are taxed.

...i don't blame people not paying tax...because it is going to one direction...

...already the status quo is at play in lagos state...have anyone noticed...all the initial 'gra gra' by sanwo-olu has reduced in the past few months...

This is a big lie. Except the governor does not know the meaning of taxes which is very pathetic. On PAYE, is the governor saying that all Federal, state government, private sector employees are less than 700,000? If that is true, then there is a problem. Secondly, taxes are not just PAYE. We pay excise duty when we buy alcohol as the brewers charge the cost to the finsl consumers. VAT is paid in almost all major malls, purchases from registered businesses, etc. Fuel is taxed, contractors pay Withholding Taxes, etc. What about multiple levies on shops, transport operators like advert taxes, tenement rates or land use charges, building permits, vehicle licences, road tolls, etc. Are they not taxes in different names? What then is the base for your huge IGR if not taxes snd levies? A governor that does not know the tax base of his state is worse than a seller who does not know his wares.
Sincerely speaking , the best Lagos governor has ever had would be the worst in other poor states. With the huge IGR there is no reason to have untarred streets in Lagos, but what do you see ... "potwells" and dirty untarred streets everywhere.

Fun fact: The LASG is the inefficient government at all three levels of government.

How many people have real jobs in the state? Lagos is filled with people walking up and down with very little to show for it.

But then again, his definition of tax is relative cos as far as I know, even market women who sell vegetables and pure water sellers pay some levies for selling or hawking in the market. They give them "tickets" from the local government... so that too has to count.

What is difference? Are businesses the owner of themselves or you want a businessman to pay tax on business income and pay tax on income from his "salary"? Do businessmen earn other income than from businesses?

wilcox:

Mr. How do you disconnect people from business Please? Is it not people that run business?

There is a vast difference between people and businesses.
The law recognizes the business as separate from its owners in many instance.
For salary earners, their tax is paid on income.

Some businesses and their owner are the same but even in that case, they do not
pay tax on their profit but pay an estimated fee to the government based on shop size and
location instead of the required percentage spelt out by the law.

Formal business owners are to pay 2 different taxes according to law, one on business
and the other on their personal income.

Where the confusion is coming from is that some people think arbitrarily taxing a shop covers
everything.
