The Senate, yesterday, said that it would reduce the number of political parties participating in elections in the country from the current 91 to five through legislation. The Senate stated this at a meeting with the leadership of INEC led by its chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, in the National Assembly, Abuja.

The apex legislative chamber expressed dissatisfaction over the number of political parties fielding candidates in the forthcoming governorship elections in Bayelsa and Kogi states. In particular, the Chairman of the Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Senator Kabiru Gaya (APC Kano South) and former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu (PDP Enugu West), said that the number of political parties that would be contesting elections was unwieldy and a contravention of the amended Electoral Act.

Ekweremadu expressed serious concerns over the number of political parties, which he insisted was a breach of the 2010 electoral Act (as amended). The former Deputy Senate President said that by virtue of the electoral Act, political parties, which failed to win a seat in the general elections should be deregistered. This prompted the committee chairman to query the INEC chairman on why such “failed” political parties would be allowed to appear on the ballot papers in Bayelsa and Kogi states.

He said: “Those parties that didn’t perform shouldn’t be on the ballot. The existing electoral act as amended has precluded participation of parties that didn’t perform in the last elections.

Why are you putting them in the ballot in the forthcoming elections?” Gaya hinted that his committee was determined to reduce the number of existing political parties to three or five. “We need to amend the act to reduce the political parties to a maximum of five. This committee is really committed to reducing the number of political parties to save tax payers money,” he insisted. The INEC chairman, in his defence, said that the commission was in a dilemma to take decisive action to deregister political parties as a result of pending electoral litigations which could alter its judgement .

He said: “The Commission had systematically deregistered many parties under the electoral act. But the parties insisted that the electoral act is inferior to the Constitution. “Again, at what point can we say election has been concluded? Is it after we have issued Certificate of Return or after the courts have concluded judgements on petitions arising from elections?” Earlier, giving an update on his Commission’s preparation for the Bayelsa and Kogi governorship elections, Yakubu said that all non- sensitive materials had since been deployed and all other arrangements would be made for credible, free and fair elections in the two states.

No, We are soo stoopid we forget history too easily this kind of arrangement has been done before why are we running in circles? they want to hijack democracy, with 91 parties any Nigerian can run for office whether you win or lose na you sabi, but once it is 5 only the ruling party or the 2 biggest parties will run everything going as far as appointing leaders(stooges) in the other 3 parties and frustrating those parties. Consider also we have free and fair elections but with or without taking bribes the leaders of the five parties agree to a candidate everybody in Nigeria opposes maybe say Bob risky being our president so they all adopt risky as candidate what do we do? We the people are only making the parties more powerful and us more powerless.
For now we have seen cases however few where unexpected parties came out victorious, one or two parties cannot control all 89 other parties. once rigging stops we will enjoy this 91 party system better than that 5 party system. Some parties require you to pay 200million for ticket others are 20thousand with only 5 parties the price will only go higher meaning only the rich can run for office.
Bet me those 5 parties will cause Tribalism, religious intolerance, etc by their candidates and their rhetorics. We saw it when Nigeria started with NCNC= igbo peoples party NDP=hausa people party and that Action group= yoruba people party. These 3 will dominate the rest of us even more than before and sadly only one will keep producing unqualified leaders like it happened before. We will go back to a time when we had political parties named
1. Zamfara commoners party
2. Midwest Democratic front
3. United middle belt Congress
4. Northern people's party
Because they want the support of people especially illiterates who will blindly support any poopu or party as long as it has the name of their tribe or region or even religion attached to it.
It may even be less subtle the party will have any name but once it has 2 Northern muslims leading it will be viewed by the north as the party to support because of that reason alone.

Let's assume those are the 4 parties allowed to remain along with APC or PDP imagine what a Nigeria that would be, imagine the marginalisation, don't get me wrong marginalisation exists look at the NigerDelta 100% of Nigeria oil yet no electricity no jobs nothing but this would be on an even grander scale putting us in a position whereby the electorate is forced to pick between 5 types of poison. There is no how you will not see one you like out of 91 dresses/cars/food there is no how.

Problem with this new law is simple....it runs against the principle of freedom of association.

Many parties are going to be heading to court to stop this. Not everyone is into PDP or APC .

Rubbish move. They say 2 heads are better than one but it's like these people are collectively dull. The Senate of all people should be defending people's fundamental rights to freedom of association. They should ordinarily know Freedom of Association is our God-given rights. Nigeria democracy is just another dictatorship in disguise i swear, but them no even dey hide am again. The Senate should be scrapped. As for solution to too many political parties, very simple, the FG via INEC should stop funding them. Let them fund themselves, and then you see those redundant political parties will die off on their own, die a natural death and fade away. As long as INEC keeps funding political parties billions, then the forming of many political parties will continue to be a business for some people, a cash cow for quick money.

They need to amend the constitution to do what they are proposing. The electoral act cannot solve the problem because it is a constitutional matter.

We could have independent contestants as opposed to that number of parties.

There should be a required number of unique registered members before a party can be allowed to contest in any election.

We could also place rules to curtail cross carpeting from one party to the other. No one should be allowed to contest under a party if they have not been a registered member of said party for a specified amount of time (for instance 2 years). All these folks that lose primaries in one party and the next thing, they are flag bearers of another party would not happen.

Then we should try to make the voting process electronic, it would save cost in the long run and to a great extent make the voting process more transparent.

Very good move. May be they could cut more slacks and just leave it at 7 political parties. This will allow for more dynamics and flexibilities. Independent party should be allowed too for people that choose to be alone instead of going through political parties to vie for electoral positions.

Thinking loud, a referendum should also be planned and conducted to reduce the number of senators/HOR. This will cut cost and trim off over bloated legislative arm of government.
