2011: Atiku shrinks Jonathan’s lead in many states – Survey

A recent survey by London-based research group, International Institute of Social Science Research (IISSR), has shown that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peoples Democrat Party (PDP) Presidential aspirant is making significant gains among delegates to the party’s convention.
By this he is cutting into the early gains made by President Goodluck Jonathan in the bid to snatch PDP’s ticket for the 2011 presidential race.
Jonathan, former military President, Ibrahim Babangida, immediate past National Security Adviser, Aliyu Gusau, and Governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki, all of whom are also bidding for the PDP ticket, had had an early start while Atiku battled for the reinstatement of his party membership and waiver.
But the survey by the London-based group, the most recent one, showed that in most of the states in the country, Atiku had cut significantly into Jonathan’s lead and is currently leading the race for the PDP ticket.
IISSR’s Nuhu Shiabu, who briefed newsmen on their findings in Abuja at the weekend, said Jonathan’s support in the North had virtually disappeared due to the recent bombing incident in Abuja and the way it was handled.
They also found that the recent controversy concerning the alleged award of nine off-shore oil wells had severely shaken the President’s supporters in the mainly Christian states of the Middle-Belt.
Findings of the survey also reflected the movement of support from the Jonathan to other candidates in the Southeast.
It cited in particular government’s abortion of the Igbo Political Summit in Owerri, Imo State, in October which had the effect of alienating the President’s key supporters in the region.
The survey indicated that not even a recent meeting between Jonathan and Alex Ekwueme brokered by former Commonwealth Secretary General, Emeka Anyaoku, has been able to assuage the feelings of the people of the Southeast, who viewed the disruption of their confab as an affront on Ndigbo.
“The effect of the radicalisation of moderated political leaders in the Southeast such as Dr Alex Ekwueme is also showing in the renewed agitation for zoning in the region,” the survey noted.

AN opinion poll conducted by NOI Polls, in conjunction with the United States-based Gallup Poll, has rated President Goodluck Jonathan as the most acceptable presidential hopeful in the 2011 elections.

advertisement
The poll, conducted between October 7 and 11, rated aspirants, including General Muhammadu Buhari, General Ibrahim Babangida, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Kwara State governor, Dr Bukola Saraki and Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

It reported that nearly all respondents (99 per cent) of the respondents said they were aware of President Jonathan's ambition to govern Nigeria from 2011, while 87 per cent of the respondents said he should run for the office. Only 12 per cent of those polled responded that the president should not stand for election in 2011, while one per cent was indifferent.

President Jonathan's closest rivals in the race, according to the polls, are former head of state, General Muhammadu Buhari and the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

NOI/Gallup said in a statement announcing the polls: "Almost all (99 per cent) of the people polled said they were aware of President Jonathan's intention to contest in the upcoming presidential election. Eighty-seven per cent of respondents said they feel he should run for office. This figure is slightly higher than before the president declared his intentions to contest, where 81 per cent felt he should run."

While 97 per cent of the respondents are aware of Buhari's intention to contest the 2011 election, only 41 per cent of the figure feel that he should run for office in 2011. Another 58 per cent say he should not run and three per cent of the population of the polls said they are undecided.

For Ribadu, 86 per cent of the respondents say they are aware of his ambition to contest the 2011 presidency but only 55 per cent think he should contest the election. Forty-one per cent think he should not run for the office.

Ninety per cent of those polled said they are aware of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar's ambition to contest the 2011 poll, but only 27 per cent think he should run for the election. While 87 per cent of those who believe he should run say that it is his right to contest, 21 per cent of those polled say they don't want him to contest because of their view that he is corrupt.

The ambition of former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida, to rule is also well-known among Nigerians. Ninety-seven per cent of those polled said they were aware of his ambition but only 27 per cent feel he should run for office, while 69 per cent think he should not run.

The poll agency stated in a release: "While nearly all of those quizzed (97 per cent) are aware that Ibrahim Babangida has declared his intention to run for the 2011 presidential election, only 27 per cent think he should run for office."

Of the 69 per cent of those who said IBB should not run for president, 19 per cent gave as their reason, IBB's poor reputation, 17 per cent said he is corrupt and another 17 per cent want a new generation of leaders.

For Governor Bukola Saraki, 88 per cent of the respondents said they are aware of his plan to contest the election, while only 35 per cent want him to contest the election. Sixty-two per cent of the respondents said Saraki should not contest the election, while three per cent are non-committal.

The report stated: "While 88 per cent of the people polled were aware of Governor Saraki's intention to run for office, only slightly over one-third (35 per cent) of respondents felt he should run. Sixty-two per cent said he should not run while three per cent did not have anything to say on the issue."
When asked whether Governor Saraki should run for the 2011 election, 84 per cent of those who said he should run for the office, said he had a right as a Nigerian to vie for the office. Six per cent said he is a good man, while 35 per cent said he was experienced and a man of integrity.

Twenty-three per cent of the 87 per cent of the respondents who want Jonathan to run cited their reasons as his right as a Nigerian; 18 per cent cited his experience/competence and 16 per cent said he was innovative and a man of integrity, while 10 and 12 per cent said he was a good man and he represented a new generation of leaders respectively.

By the way. Are you aware that Atiku is selling his properties in the US and relocating to the United Arabs Emirates? Please read this United States security report on Atiku:

The ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to contest the 2011 presidential election appears to be getting some negative mention in the international security circles, following indications the United States security services have placed him under close watch.

Information at the disposal of the Saturday Tribune indicated that the United States security outfits in conjunction with operatives in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Mi5 of the United Kingdom are working on certain information relating to Atiku.

Sources claimed that Atiku’s activities came into focus following indications that he was putting his Potomac house on sale and relocating his interests to the UAE.

Diplomatic sources stated that Atiku is under watch after he relocated his wife, Jemilar, from the United States to the UAE.

“The reports are to the effect that Atiku is under watch for a number of issues. There are fresh insights into the Thomas Jefferson case. There are also indications that he plans to sell his house in Potomac, Maryland and relocate the proceeds to the UAE. The house is worth millions of dollars. The movement of funds around him is being watched,” a source close to the development said during the week.

Other sources said that the US is also watching Atiku over reports linking him to alleged acquisition of OPL 245 through an Italian and other associates.

“The Mi5 has worked closely with the UAE authorities in recent years. They are worried about movement of funds into the UAE. They are aware that a number of top Nigerians are fast turning the UAE into abodes and they are settled on the need to track funds no matter the intent,” another source said.

But  the spokesman of Atiku Campaign organisation, Mallam Garba Shehu, said in an interview that the former vice president believed that he was being closely monitored by the Nigerian authorities rather than American security operatives.

He said: “Atiku is not an American. He does not own investments in the US. What we gathered was that the Nigerian government plans to uproot all the Obasanjo cases against Atiku and use them to scandalise him.”

Shehu said that the House in Potomac was not on sale and that whoever planned to buy it should beware.

“What is happening is that the Jonathan government has been gathering dirty things about its opponents. We are aware that the legal adviser to the government has asked for cooperation and support from the US government so that they can reopen all those Obasanjo cases against him. And the American government told him that in all those cases, they did not find anything against Atiku and that the US government does not think it is politically wise for them to dabble into local Nigerian politics,” Atiku’s spokesman said.

If Atiku so loved Nigeria why is he selling his properties in the United States and relocating the proceeds to the United Arabs Emirates instead of back to Nigeria.

Abeg, forget Atiku. He is a looter!

Vote GEJ.

It is NOT Atiku. It is GEJ who is ahead of the pack.

You don't get it . The original article is referring to the popularity of candidates within the PDP . It is thus about who is most likely to clinch the PDP ticket. We can then assume the article is talking about Atiku being more popular amongst voting PDP members and not Nigerians in general as the article you supplied indicates .

The article is logical and the desperate behaviour of Jonathan and his camp actually proves the point. If Jonathan is genuinely popular amongst PDP members who will vote , as all the fake endorsement touted about indicates, why is Mr. President doing all manners of undemocratic things to clinch the PDP ticket? Why does he need his appointees to be included as voters when other candidates are democratically happy to test their popularity with the card carry voting members of the PDP alone?
Re: 2011: Atiku Shrinks Jonathan’s Lead In Many States – Survey by jamace(m): 2:01pm On Nov 08, 2010
^^^ I get your point but I don't think Atiku has the ayes more than GEJ. Atiku is well known to everybody in terms of his looting ability. His exploit during the BPE saga is a case in point. Does Atiku have any love for this country and he is busy transfering his looted wealth from one foreign country to another instead of bringing it back to Nigeria? I don't think so.

One thing I know is that IBB and Atiku, including Gusau, are mere jokers in the arena of current political terrain of Nigeria.
Re: 2011: Atiku Shrinks Jonathan’s Lead In Many States – Survey by Solomon227(m): 2:42pm On Nov 08, 2010
Its a farce!. I respect the earlier Gallup polls and I have followed them from my secondary school days in the 90s and they hardly fail in their predictions. A credible opinion poll would hav stated state-by-state analysis and clearly stated the number of respondents in all situations. If d poll was credible why did they elaborate Atiku alleged 60-65 % gains and remain totally silent on GEJ obvious 90-100% supports in the SW, SS and NC. Even anti-GEJ campaigners on this forum know GEJ will most likely win 70% of SE PDP delegates votes with IBB being queittly buried 6ft underground in d race.
This is a possible abracadabra in readiness for announcement of Atiku as the Con-nonsense candidate!
