Between General Sani Abacha, Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu and Major Gideon Orkar, who in your opinion was bravest Nigerian soldier?
COL. ODUMEGWU OJUKWU AND THE CIVIL WAR
Lieutenant-Colonel Ojukwu was in Kano, northern Nigeria, when Major Patrick Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu on 15 January 1966 executed and announced the bloody military coup in Kaduna, also in northern Nigeria. It is to Ojukwu's credit that the coup lost much steam in the north, where it had succeeded. Lt. Col. Odumegwu-Ojukwu supported the forces loyal to the Supreme Commander of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Major-General Aguiyi-Ironisi. Major Nzeogwu was in control of Kaduna, but the coup had failed in other parts of the country.

Aguiyi-Ironsi took over the leadership of the country and thus became the first military head of state. On Monday, 17 January 1966, he appointed military governors for the four regions. Lt. Col. Odumegwu-Ojukwu was appointed Military Governor of Eastern Region. Others were: Lt.-Cols Hassan Usman Katsina (North), Francis Adekunle Fajuyi (West), and David Akpode Ejoor (Mid West). These men formed the Supreme Military Council with Brigadier B.A.O. Ogundipe, Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon, Chief of Staff Army HQ, Commodore J. E. A. Wey, Head of Nigerian Navy, Lt. Col. George T. Kurubo, Head of Air Force, Col. Sittu Alao.

By 29 May, the 1966 anti-Igbo pogrom started. This presented problems for Odumegwu Ojukwu, as he did everything in his power to prevent reprisals and even encouraged people to return, as assurances for their safety had been given by his supposed[citation needed] colleagues up north and out west.

On 29 July 1966, a group of officers, including Majors Murtala Muhammed, Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, and Martin Adamu, led the majority Northern soldiers in a mutiny that later developed into a "Counter-Coup" or "July Rematch". The coup failed in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria where Ojukwu was the military Governor, due to the effort of the brigade commander and hesitation of northern officers stationed in the region (partly due to the mutiny leaders in the East being Northern whilst being surrounded by a large Eastern population).

The Supreme Commander General Aguiyi-Ironsi and his host Colonel Fajuyi were abducted and killed in Ibadan. On acknowledging Ironsi's death, Ojukwu insisted that the military hierarchy be preserved. In that case, the most senior army officer after Ironsi was Brigadier Babafemi Ogundipe, should take over leadership, not Colonel Gowon (the coup plotters choice), however the leaders of the counter-coup insisted that Colonel Gowon be made head of state. Both Gowon and Ojukwu were of the same rank in the Nigeria Army then (Lt. Colonel). Ogundipe could not muster enough force in Lagos to establish his authority as soldiers (Guard Battalion) available to him were under Joseph Nanven Garba who was part of the coup, it was this realisation that led Ogundipe to opt out. Thus, Ojukwu's insistence could not be enforced by Ogundipe unless the coup plotters agreed (which they did not). The fall out from this led to a stand off between Ojukwu and Gowon leading to the sequence of events that resulted in the Nigerian civil war.
WHO WAS GIDEON ORKAR?
Major Gideon Gwaza Orkar (October 4, 1952 - July 27, 1990) was a Nigerian military officer who staged a violent coup against the government of General Ibrahim Babangida on April 22, 1990. Orkar and his conspirators seized the FRCN radio station, various military posts around Lagos and the Dodan Barracks, Lagos, the military headquarters and presidential residence. Babangida was present when the barracks were attacked but managed to escape by a back route.
Orkar's coup was the most bloody in Nigeria's history. It particularly occurred when everyone was afraid of speaking since the then President Ibrahim Babangida was well known for his intolerance to confrontation.

In his coup address, Orkar called for the excision of five northern states. However, the coup was crushed by the Babangida regime and Orkar was executed. He was said to have been given the opportunity to be saved if he would agree to abide by conditions given him but he turned it down and instead spoke against the incompetence of the government that was to execute him.
SANI ABACHA
Sani Abacha (20 September 1943 – 8 June 1998) was a Nigerian Army officer and dictator who served as the de facto President of Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998. He is also the first Nigerian soldier to attain the rank of a full star General without skipping a single rank.
Infact Abacha needs no much introduction, he was well known globally as one of the most fearless leaders of his time, placed pari-pasu with the likes of Idi Amin Dada and Muammar Gaddafi in Africa.

It is almost an impossible question to answer.
One was involved in a number of coup, became the head of state, later died very cheaply.
One died showing the world how to be brave with integrity. Did not deny his action which was punishable by death.
The third is known to be the leader of a three year country and the king of his people even in death.

Which Ojukwu are we talking about here?
Is it the same Ojukwu that ran away to Ivory Coast when the heat became too much for Biafra?
Is it the same Ojukwu that led millions of Igbo people to their untimely death and ran away to Ivory Coast ?
How can Ojukwu be brave?
Please stop insulting our collective intelligence as a nation.
Ojukwu was a big coward, so is Nnamdi Kanu.

dont misinterprete bravery for rigidity. Abacha has no atom of bravery, he was actually wicked. Do you even know what is brave? I Give it to ojukwu, challanged the govt in power, the UN Know Ojukwu due to the civil war. People like Ojukwu cant be erased for their benevolence a charismatic attitude. ABACHA misused power just like Buhari is doing.

Abacha was brave? No. He was a plain sadistic tyrant. Let's not confuse tyranny with Bravery.
People need to have a good knowledge of Nigerian Military history to determine who can say were brave.
Here is my opinion..

1. While i dont align with the dastard coup, I would say Major Nzeogwu was a brave soldier for daring to plan and execute the first Military coup in Nigeria. And his bravery played out as days after the coup was botched and many of the coup plottters arrested, he was the last man standing and still refusing to stand down and letting go the command/ district he took hold of.

2. Odemegwu Ojukwu was a brave soldier. While many would claim he cowardly ran away to Ivory coast during the Civil War, but his bravery was magnificent in his determination to foil the Nzeogwu coup by resisting the plotters attempt to get hold of the KANO Command where Ojukwu was GOC.
While many would assert that it was an Ibo coup, but it was actually Ojukwu and Ironsi ( both Ibos) that went against their ibo brothers to foil the coup.
The Nzeogwu coup would have very likely succeeded if not for the bravery of Ojukwu in foiling it from the North, while Ironsi foiled it from the West.
Ojukwus bravery was also obvious by the way he stood for his people and tried to fight against the unjust onslaught against the Ibos as aftermath of the Nzeogwu coup. Ojukwu was brave to lead the rag tag Biafra rebels in the civil war and they took on the Nigerian Military might for over 2yrs.

3 Lieutenant Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi , Military Governor of Western Nigeria, was a brave soldier. He stood his ground and decide to protect Aguyi I Ironsi when Ironsi was arrested in Ibadan. Adekunle Fajuyi was brave enough to want to sacrifice his life for Ironsi. And he was killed after he was arrested along with Ironsi by soldiers led by Theophilus Danjuma.

4. Like him or Hate him, but for those who know the Nigerian Military history well, Olusegun Obasanjo is not only a brave soldier but also a Master strategist. The Nigerian Military history can never be complete without the mention of Olusegun Obasanjo. At a time when Military coups was rife and there was massive suspicion of revenge and counter coups that many Senior Officers feared and refrained from being Head of State, Olusegun Obasanjo was brave enough to take on the position as Head of State. On assumption, he strategically retired some Military personnel and dismantled every military structures he considered to be inimical to his govt. His bravery and strategic moves put an end to Military mutinies and rebellious coups in his tenure.
And it wasn't surprising also that when Obasanjo became Civilian President later on, the first thing he did was to retire most long serving Military Officers who he felt had become too powerful. He also redeployed all Military Armoury from Kaduna to other parts of the country. Before then Abacha had moved most of the Armouries from the South to Kaduna.
For these and many more, Olusegun Obasanjo is not just a brave soldier but a Legend. That's why when he speaks regarding Military and security issues about Nigeria, people take his intel serious

please let him read 48 laws of power. When a soldier retreats doesn't mean he is a coward just a tactical move. Most Nigerians especially people from a particular tribe because they are the ones with this false analysis feel some one has to be like Rambo or be extremely evil and wicked to be brave. To them Benjamin Adekunle is a brave man. Lol. My two pick are Orkar who I love so much and Ojukwu. I still rate Abacha very high too even though he was a kleptomaniac.

Ojukwu was a big coward, so is Nnamdi Kanu.

Ojukwu is brave because he did something no other person in Nigeria will ever be able to do again. He declared the freedom of his people and fought with nothing for 3 years to keep it.

The rest of what you see in Nigeria are just Hausa/Fulani bootlickers who cant fight for 5 minutes to save their dignity

Ojukwu fought the combined forces of Nigeria, Britain, USA, Russia, Canada, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, etc for three good years.

In other words, the so-called world powers needed to combine forces in order to face the republic of Biafra.

Long live the memory of Ikemba Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu.
Long live Biafra.

Not running away in the face of death Is suicide not bravery. When you love a cause, the best way to prove such love is to do all you can and stay alive in order to achieve it rather than killing yourself for the cause.

Who knows if Ghadaffi went on exile as advised by African leaders, he'd be Libyan head of state today and the country he built wouldn't be in ruins.

Ojukwu signed for death, I don't think he should have run when he called for civil war. He just wasted 2million souls and flee without looking back. cry

That makes sense, but did Ojukwu live to fight another day or did he return to Nigeria to join the same corrupt government that was oppressing his people?
Don't be a blind follower man.
I hope you won't be too surprised to know that these so called leaders always take their children and family overseas first before starting war.
