[s]However, There is a Ministry and agency of government whose responsibility it is to clean the gutters. Billions of Naira of tax-payers monies are budgeted for that Ministry and Agency to function well. Furthermore, some people earn fat salaries to ensure that the drainages are not clogged. [/s]

Moreover, this is 2019. Why is the government still constructing open drainage systems?

STOP BUILDING OPEN DRAINAGES NIGERIA!!! Common malaria cannot be curtailed when every street has open sewage/gutters. smh

Closed drainage doesn't mean the water can't pass through. It is still called a drainage for a reason. It just means that there'll be little openings for the water to sip through while majority of the drainage is still covered in order to prevent the temptation to dump refuse in it by the populace.

Nigeria's politicians are cheats. It's more than fifty years that open drainage gutter stopped to be built in other better countries.

Nigeria's politicians build the most abandoned type of development projects and commission for their citizens.
They go abroad to enjoy modern development projects built by responsible leaders.

They build open drainage gutter in order to save money for stealing.

They sink water boreholes instead of modern water supply system - all to save money for stealing.

Late Mbakwe built the last modern water supply system in old Imo state. His successors sink boreholes they know would close the next day after commission.

Lagos is a huge disaster waiting to happen.

A pigsty in its entirety.

The environmental sanitation culture of the average Lagosian has gone to the dogs.

The fault is somewhat the government's and partly the people's.

Had it been other states in 9ja are getting half the attention Lagos is getting, many people would have relocate from that place.

Abuja that should be like Lagos is just quiet, only government institutions.

Lagos needs serious decongestion and only when companies, industries and financial institutions start looking at other states for investment can this decongestion be achieved.

For decades, open and dirty drainage systems have been a prominent feature of roads and streets in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

The filthy condition of many streets in Lagos State is attributable to the construction of an open drainage system. For some residents, open drainage systems are considered as alternatives to refuse dumps. All these contribute to the notoriously unsanitary condition of Africa's 5th largest economy.

The construction of exposed drainage systems in Lagos State is a culture that has been sustained over the decades. Even the very recently reconstructed Oshodi-Airport road features exposed drainage. See photos of the open drainage on the newly reconstructed Oshodi-Airport Road.

Sadly, these ubiquitous and uncomplimentary sights of open and dirty drainage systems all over Lagos State are what greets and leaves a lasting first impression on first-time visitors to Nigeria.

It is no news that Lagos state is prone to flooding. The supremely notorious blocked drainage systems is the chief cause of flooding on many roads in the state when it rains.

It goes without saying, no city in the world that sincerely desires to be taken seriously leaves its drainage system exposed.

The Ministry of the Environment through the Office of Drainage Services is responsible for the cleaning of the open and dirty drainage system in the state. Unarguably, this agency of the Lagos State government has failed terrifically in that responsibility.

Lagos State is home to about 22 million Nigerians. Lagos is currently home to 65 percent of Nigeria’s businesses, with a presence of over 2,000 manufacturing companies, 200 financial institutions and the largest collection of small and medium enterprises in Africa.
