Awolowo did not work with touts , he was mainly in opposition until by accident he became VP to gowon, Tinubu is a promoter of touts , he has turned Lagos into the capital of touts in Africa. He is also famous for revenue syndication

Awolowo like all other mortals had his shortcomings but he was neither a Billionaire nor a thief.

He was comfortable but NOT rich. He was a successful business man and an outstanding Lawyer.

His Newspapers Empire, The Nigerian Tribune
& Sister Titles published by African Newspapers PLC (Established in 1949) is the oldest surviving newspapers in Nigeria and about the only Nigerian company being managed by the 3rd-4th Generation.

He was also a substantial shareholder in Nigerian Bottling Company and has reasonable Real Estate investments.

Awolowo, Azikiwe, Ahmadu Bello, Tafawa Bello, SLA Akinjola and many of the politicians of the First Republic didn't have mansions in London, USA, Dubai or Saudi Arabia.

shocked

A great leader who had the good of the Southwest at heart.
He dangled the carrot so well and always stuck his head outside the box in very obtuse angles.

His gift of free education endeared him to his people and made them totally blind of his obvious flaws.
It is believed that he emancipated his people in order for them to be enslaved to him.
That is why even today, he is still revered by them.
Generations of the beneficiaries of his free education scheme still feel indebted to him.

And that is the ingenuity of the man Awo.

Despite my distaste of his choices.
I respected Awolowo. He was a sage and a living irony.
He conquered the South West, conquered Nigeria but could not conquer himself.

We shall never forget his good deeds, his great ideas and his legacies.
The Yorubas will not,
The Igbos will not,
The Hausas will not,
Certainly, NwaAmaikpe will not too.

But even if I do, I will never forget how a great man with very brave ideas died a coward for no justifiable reasons other than pride.

The way you people used Billionaire carelessly is misleading.
1) As at Independence in 1960, there was no single millionaire in Nigeria ( based on Pounds Sterling).

2) As at 1987 when Awolowo died, there was no Billionaire (in Dollars or Naira) in Nigieria and Awo wasn't even among the first 100 richest Nigerians.

3) Even as at now, most Governors who left offices in 2007 are now very broke and can't be among the first 100 richest Nigerians.

4) Embezzling money can't make you a Billionaire because if you don't have enterpreneurial skills, the money will be finished within 10 years of leaving power.

5) Embezzlement is a SHORT term path to wealth and unless you are constantly in power to refill your loot, the wealth will nosedive with time.

6) Anything can be on Google (It's just a search engine). It doesn't confer authencity on the information.

Most of you guys don’t understand much.

That helicopter was hired by Awolowo party (AG) towards the December 1959 elections in Nigeria.

Yes the OP was right, they were on a campaign mission to the Northern region. Infact, the helicopters were actually two (2) and they were hired at something around £80 daily.

Awolowo did that for two reasons, apart from the advantage of quick transport in the vast Northern territories the arrival of a helicopter is so strange a sight that the Action Groupers are automatically ensured a large audience.

Also in the helicopter, Awolowo went with brand of retained barristers to defend their AG party supporters against all kind of charges framed against them by the local court.

Below is the Action Group (AG) emblem imprinted on the Helicopter.

Awolowo owns a newspaper and a printing press and he owns a major share in cocacola nbc botling company that is a nationwide business, he is a lawyer and an accountant... tinubu owns accounting firm, retired as a treasure of exoon mobil, and worked at many leading global firm Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, Haskins, & Sells, and GTE Services Corporation....

Calling him a thief wont change anything about the misery of your region politically

Obafemi Awolowo, the first premier of the Western Region, was found guilty of corruption by the Coker Commission in 1962. In 1954, the Western Region Marketing Board had L6.2 million. By May 1962, it had to exist on overdrafts amounting to over L2.5 million. A loan of L6.7 million was made to the National Investment and Properties Co., Ltd. for building projects out of which only L500, 000 was ever re-paid. The Western Region Finance Corporation and the West Nigeria Development Corporation also received loans of millions of pounds, which were never re-paid. The Coker Commission found Awolowo responsible for the all the ills of the Western Region Marketing Board, and Awolowo “without a doubt has failed to adhere to the standards of conduct which are required for persons holding such a post.”
