Atiku Has Poor Knowledge Of Economy, Says Aganga by Phate07(m): 2:28pm On Nov 25, 2010

The Federal Executive Council
(FEC) yesterday said former vice president Atiku Abubakar, who emerged the consensus candidate of the ‘north’ a few days ago, has too little knowledge of the economy to draw any valid conclusions.

Reacting to claims by the
presidential aspirant of the
Peoples Democratic Party that the nation ’s foreign reserve had depleted drastically, the Minister of Finance, Olusegun Aganga, said Mr Abubakar was ignorant of the workings of the economy and therefore should not be taken seriously. He said it is always dangerous to talk on such a topic without having adequate information because this amounts to shooting from the dark.

Mr Aganga who addressed
journalists after the weekly FEC meeting said, “Let me correct this again; it is dangerous to play politics with the economy because the facts are there. You cannot argue with the facts. When you say ‘dangerously low level,’ that is untrue. That is not a statement of fact. It is always difficult to shoot from the dark, so it is always important to have
the right information. ”

The minister said in terms of the performance of the budget, the recurrent expenditure has been a complete success.

“Budget implementation means different things to different people. When you look at the expenditure side, as of date we have implemented
the recurrent part of it 100 percent. On the capital side, we have declared at least 750 billion; we expect to be N900 billion if not more by the end of the year. We are still implementing the budget. And at that level, in absolute numbers, is the highest we have had for the last five years,” he said.

Atiku has no agenda for nigeria if not he would rather use that to campaign rather than saying things he don't understand and that is how if he wins will spend nigeria's money wantonly

What else could Atiku argue about? He is of no different with Benard Madoff of USA (THE MONEY MANAGER grin a fraudster) Going by his comments on the very day he commented on Yar' dua/Jonathan administration, there was no doubt that what Mr. Atiku is only after is on how to manage the federal government revenue purse to suit his insatiable want. meaning that he does not have the interest of the people at heart neither could he invent better idea that will move the country ahead, Atiku should be discarded amongst the presidential aspirants with immediate effect, he will do the nation no good than harm

Let us leave Atiku for now and address what aganga said. The Fed govt achieved 100% on recurrent expenditure. Recurrent exps are salaries of govt workers and overheads i.e  day to day expenses of running the govt. Nothing developmental there.

he is thinking of achieving  N900b in capital expenditure before the end of year. why did he not state what percentage that represent and in other news, he  listed INEC funding, N200b to be paid to NEPA staff as legacy issue which the govt addressed. Since these are not recurrent, then they form part of the capital expenditure. What is development here.

Are these regular budgeted expenses the reason why we emptied the excess crude reserve and massively drew down on foreign reserve?

Aganga response reminds one of Shagari response to Awolowo's alarm on the state of the economy in 1981. less than a year later, reality struck and we are still suffering the effect 30 years later.

Do you have figures ? I take it you don't even know what the federal reserve reads right now from your response. And incase you've not been watching the news, not only the Nigerian govt is impressed with the economy but even the IMF and World bank too. A thieving illiterate comes out to say the federal reserves are dangerously low without even knowing what he means.

Ha!

What former Nigerian dictator had any knowledge of the economy?
Jonathan has a good knowledge base of the Nigerian or world economy?
IBB/OBJ/Yaradua all had the 'good' knowledge of the economy?

And Nigeria is still where it is today?

How can any "Aluta Continua" have any knowledge of the economy when the primary pre-occupation is to LOOT the economy? cheesy

Once again, Atiku is not different, but given the chance to be the president of Nigeria, he will become an independent looter without the clout that comes with the rotten egg like OBJ and his Anenih group of economic carcinogens.

We need an anti-OBJ force for the country Nigeria, to move in the right direction.

Dont be ignorant my friend. So foreign reserve now need spy technology to know. If you dont know. just ask with decorum. For your info nigeria foreign reserve on 22/11/2010 was $33.9billion. It is always on the homepage of central bank website under economic indicators. ok

For further information, below is the movement in reserve, our bonny oil prices for the same period (in bracket) and our oil production (in blue)
20/1/09 $50.9billion, ($44.95), (1.75mbd)
14/10/09 $44.1billion, ($78.25), (1.96mbd)
04/01/10 $42.3billion, ($77.62), (1.9mbd)
22/11/10 $33.9billion, ($83.9), (2.23mbd)

Now make your inference

As for brentwood institutions being impressed with Nigerian economy, I laughed in foreign language. They were impressed with SAP too. They were impressed with your economy in late 1970s and encourage you to borrow because according to them, you 'underborrow'. The same term their lackeys - Aganga and DMO boss are using now.

A developing country that is entrying their economic noose will always be the poster-boy of IMF and WB

Just leave the jokers. You don't need a degree to know that South Africa is by far the biggest and healthiest economy in Africa. Now just read what's below for August in SA (africa's best economy )
tell me what you think about a $34
Billion dollar reserve ?
(MENAFN) South Africaï½s Reserve Bank said that its foreign currency reserves climbed 2.3 percent last month as the National Treasury boosted purchases and a weaker dollar increased the value of holdings in euros and pounds, Reuters reported. Gross reserves rose 2.3 percent to $43.2 billion, the Pretoria-based central bank said in a statement. Net reserves increased to $38.7 billion from $38.2 billion. The Treasury increased its foreign currency deposits with the central bank by $480 million last month after adding $661 million in June, the data shows. The government is stepping up purchases to help curb the rand, which has gained 6.5 percent against the dollar in the past six months.

Atiku attempted the sort of rumour mongering you have above and was told what is what point blank by Aganga. Rumours don't work where there are figures, and figures are what World class bankers like Aganga feed on. Atiku's figures extend only as far as money laundering (6 billion stolen Naira in the US alone) and the "roger" he was getting as a customs officer at Seme border.

Never play rumour against those with figures. Big mistake! So, revealed; Atiku has poor knowledge of economics! embarassed

I think KLAS has raised some pertinent issues.

I am very alarmed that Aganga would point to the payment of salaries as a sign of some kind of success when our biggest problems lie in the capital side of things.

And he should desist from defending the government by all means available and level up with the country. Things are not working.

After posting what i have above as evidence that our so callled dangerously low $34 billion dollar reserve is at par with the best economy on this continent, an ignoramus is still trying to use that argument ? God help some people.
Re: Atiku Has Poor Knowledge Of Economy, Says Aganga by klas(m): 8:57am On Nov 26, 2010
^^^ after reading your rantings, I can easilly see you lack knowledge of interpreting economic data.

South africa does need as much foreign reserve as nigeria, it is a manufacturing nation. Most of its imports are raw materials for processing and value addition. Suppliers are ready to supply on credit to such economy since they are sure of settlement once the recipients produce and sell the goods. Nigeria is a nono product dependent nation for forex and it is a consuming nation unlike south africa that produce a significant percentage of its needs and even export. That is why foreign suppliers to nigeria insist on irrevocable letter of credit which essentially means that all imports must be cash-backed and that is through your foreign reserve. Industrial nations including South Africa use what is called open account. no cash backing and the transaction is purely between the two contracting parties not like Nigeria that government must indirectly back such with its reserve.

Do you know why nigerian govt always interpret the quantum of our foreign reserve in terms of the number of months' imports it can cover? Have you heard of such from US or even South Africa. it is because of the above scenario.

Lastly, from the statistics on our foreign reserve, oil prices and oil production I provided earlier, have you asked yourself, why should the foreign reserve be going down when oil prices and production are going up? You drawdown on your savings when you have shortfall in income. Is this the situation we have in nigeria now? surely not.
Re: Atiku Has Poor Knowledge Of Economy, Says Aganga by hedoyad(m): 10:29am On Nov 26, 2010
and i'm telling you that even if the govt continues on a high expenditure profile(disproportional to foreign revenue earnings i.e.) for the next few months, a $34 reserve is more than ample for the country's needs.

Isn't it the same obJ who has made a mock of Atiku's acumen the same person who built up the reserves in the first place ? who is he in support of, Jonathan or Atiku ?
