$68 billion is nothing for Nigeria, in terms of debt for a nation of our size and ambitions.

Do you know South Africa's annual budget?

$125 billion.

So, half of what they spend per year is too much for a country like Nigeria to owe some people? Rubbish.

Unless we don't know what we're doing with the money, but insofar as it is for development purposes, as in this case of tractors, we should go for it without hesitation.
it is too much for a country that cannot afford to fund a $30b budget without borrowing

Mechanization is a major reason Nigerian farmers aren't productive. If you look at rice yeild outputs you'll notice Nigerians lag behind lots countries. I believed Nigeria should copy India's policy on farm mechanization by renting out farm equipment. I'd also like to know if these service centers are government run or private sector.

Anyway I dont like the borrowing. The government has shown it doesn't take these debts seriously. The best example is the rail with subsidized ticket cost. I would like an alternative method for increasing Mechanization.

Thank you for your very intelligent contributions. The loans are ok but you are right about Nigerian inefficiency and corruption. The answer is a PPP arrangement on the bulldozers, tractors, ploughs, harrows and planters that the FG is going to buy. The coys supplying the equipment should be given incentives to establish service centers Nigeria. Then there is fleet management systems that squeeze out value from the machines in a structured way.
They will hire each machine for average of N60000 per hectare and Nigeria has over 30million hectares.
How is this not good business?

The USA is the world's largest debtor nation. Currently owing $23.16 TRILLION.

I guess their leaders ain't super creative either, so we're in good company.

USA is also the most productive nation in the world with export valued at $1.6 trillion. Nigeria export was $35 billion with a debt burden of $81 billion.

I am not against debt, but wouldn't it be wise to fund a joint venture with a private enterprise to construct an assembly factory that will assemble tractors and farm equipments for local use and export.

Nigeria once had a Fiat tractor assembly factory in the 1980s

Young Nigerian Builds Tractor and Farm Machinery

solmusdesigns:
cool
Nigerians Politicians are sometimes daft, with less than $1bn USD or N360 billion NGN, Nigerian government can build a tractor manufacturing plant close to Ajaokuta and it would serve all our tractor and heavy machinery needs at very cheaper rate, and we might start selling to other african countries making good forex.

Re: Sabo Nanono: Nigerian Seeks $1 Billion Loan To Boost Mechanised Farming by Nobody: 11:01am On Jan 25, 2020
nigerians are allergic to details,...we have zero attention to detail.
imagine this nonsense
"In Nigeria, it seeks to enhance agricultural mechanisation, specialised extension services and agro-processing in the 774 local government areas of the country."
so all local governments would get tractors, all local governments have arable land, have sizable government operated farms.
They could not even be hothered to lie properly, even the lie has no detail.

According to David Cameron Buhari government is fantastically corrupt and in Transparency International latest rating Nigeria dropped 10 places to 146 from 136 it used to be under Goodluck Jonathan regime.

Ordinary Lagos State would be able to fund $30bn annual budget if we do the right things. Nigerias fiscal problems are not just very temporary., they are a dangerous distraction if we focus too much on them.

It is as stupid as a man saying he won't borrow to send his kids to school because 80% of his salary will be spent on school fees. The consequences of that decision are out of proportion compared with the temporary discomfort.

For this particular issue, what the FG should do with the money is to set up assembly plants for bulldozers, tractors, ploughs, harrows, tillers, grain planters and tuber cultivation equipment. This is much better than using $1bn to buy equipment.

While the plan is laudable, I don't understand why we have to borrow to be able to fund about everything this govt is doing... Not because borrowing is bad but because the purpose may fail due to looting through purchase of equipments etc
