Former Vice-president and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant Atiku Abubakar’s claim that President Goodluck Jonathan cannot be trusted was faulted yesterday.

Atiku spoke through his campaign organisation on the expose of a meeting between the former United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Robin Sanders, and Jonathan published by WikiLeaks.

But, a group, the Movement for Democratic Sustainability (MDS) said contrary to Atiku’s claim, the expose confirmed the president as "a humble, honest, patriotic and down-to-earth personality."

A statement issued in Lagos and signed by the group’s Publicity Secretary, Iheanacho Afa, said that nothing in the leaked cable suggested that President Jonathan " cannot be trusted."

The statement reads: "We will like Nigerians to pause and read those documents intelligently and get the main facts and not political sensationalism that is flying around. Despite the fact that the Presidency has described the reports in the cable as inaccurate, we insist that nothing in the document suggests that Mr President sold Nigeria as some people angling for his post would have done.

"He was advised by the ambassador and other envoys who visited him , but he made it clear that he will look into them and act accordingly in a manner that would not compromise the sovereignty of the country. He never responded as a student taking dictations from a teacher. President Jonathan’s name was never linked to any of the dirty oil deals and bribe bazaars that WikiLeaks now revealed characterised the past government.

"Therefore, to us, the president is being honest by saying he is not a "politician" in the sense that politicians are known in Nigeria today. And that to us makes him a better person for the job. "

Afa said: "We strongly believe that once again, beyond petty politics, President Jonathan needs to be commended by all Nigerians for steering the ship of the Nigerian state from the wreck for which it was heading as a result of former President Yar Adua’s ill health. This noble role cannot be wished away."
