Edo state is the 3rd largest state in terms of land mass in southern Nigeria. But we can't even farm these lands well. No wonder other people are farming it for us.

I think a better idea will be to establish specialist agricultural extension service companies that the government can then seed with invest. The idea of giving farmers or farming cooperatives or government establishments these equipment is often counter productive.

In a couple of years of use these tractors for instance will need maintenance. There will be no funds to do that because the structure of the services they provide are not geared towards maintaining them. No one considers an oversized farming implement as a cost centre. They are then left to rot and the cycle of government aid come to the fore again.

If government really wants to promote agriculture as a critical component of economic development it has to think of reforming the structure with a view to transforming agriculture from a vocation to an industry, and a key component of industry is specilaization services.

Establish specialist services on land preparation for instance where the tractors will cultivate land for planting for a commercial fee. Fertilizer distribution and applications too for a fee, combined harvesting for a fee, processing, storage and packaging for a fee so that all the farmer has to do is the real gaagricultural work of tending.

Specialization will lead to much larger volumes of work achievable thus cheaper costs, much greater tendency for technology input thus better profits. We should start thinking beyond subsistence farming if wr should permenently shut our borders to foreign imports and feed ourselves well.

I just donot like mindless socialist handouts in the name of empowerment. No nation has developed without a mind towards: better, cheaper, faster, more. Next thing is that a tractor will end up in the Chairman's house to be used as a local political football.
