Sunday Aborisade, Abuja

The drama which played out on the floor of the Senate on Thursday, was a confirmation of an uneasy calm among senators in the federal parliament, investigations by Saturday PUNCH revealed on Friday.

The red chamber had on Thursday, in controversial circumstances, considered and approved the report of its committee on local and foreign loans which worked on the request by the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to borrow $22.796bn.

Findings by Saturday PUNCH among members of the red chamber showed that many of the senators had been complaining about the alleged ‘rubber stamp’ nature of the chamber which the leadership remained resolute to maintain and sustain.

A senator from the South-South geopolitical zone of the country, who pleaded anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the issue, said on Friday that the trouble started when the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, announced that the foreign loan request would be approved.

The senator said Lawan had made up his mind to work towards the loan approval, even when the committee had yet to start work on it.

He said, “It was the public declaration of the Senate President that made many of us to show apathy towards the debate on it, but we were prepared to make our position known before the final approval, which was done through the minority leader on Thursday.”

Another senator from the North-East geopolitical zone, who also craved anonymity, told Saturday PUNCH that the insistence by the Senate President that the Senate under his watch would always approve any request from the Presidency was generating cold war among his colleagues.

“Many of us are no longer comfortable with the people’s perception of the Senate as an annex of the Presidential Villa. The President of the Senate had said that his election was made possible by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress and the governors elected on the party’s platform.

“Also recently, the Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, also said his victory at the senate presidency election was made possible by President Muhammadu Buhari and the embattled Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole.

Do I read grumble, why am I surprised with the senate president, so the leadership of your party given you order on what to do in your chamber, I don't get to understand this Nigeria politics sometimes. Whether you like your party or not, you should always consider any decision to be made unanimously if is right path at the moment.
Massive debt on ground yet to paid and you want get a loan of that amount, what are you guys thinking self, you are not thinking of the implications it will bring in the future if the money can't be paid completely. My kids won't grow in this shithole country. You can get high definition movies and series into external drive and pc including Jumanji: the next level, Bombshell, Charlie's Angel, Knives out, Frozen II Doctor Sleep, Jojo Rabbit, Parasite, and varieties of Series.

Wow, there are so many sick children on this forum. No doubt. And this one for example is suffering chronic dementia.
The same Saraki that didn't stop at looting his state but rendering nothing tangible to his constituency even as a senate president is suddenly a hero?

The same Saraki that was indicted in German Paradise papers scandals?

The same Saraki who with his hang laundered #3.5 billion of Paris club fund?

The same Saraki who was rejected by his people and even his nuclear family?

So you think the unending friction between the presidency and senate is good for an ordinary citizen like you?

• FG: We need to borrow to fund the budget

• Facebook NG: Stop borrowing. Live within your means

• FG: Ok, let's live within our means by supporting local industries.

• Facebook NG: Are you madt? How can we live within our means in this economy?

• FG: Should we increase Taxes to fund the budget?

• Facebook NG: Something must be wrong with you. Do you want to kill the masses?

• FG: How about we sell some national assets to raise funds?

• Facebook NG: So you want to sell our national assets to your friends like you sold Etisalat to your family Abi?

• FG: So what can we do?

• Facebook NG: Remove Fuel Subsidies ( under recovery), you will raise N1 Trillion.

• FG: Great, we will remove fuel subsidies?

• Facebook NG: Why would you remove subsidies? Do you want to kill us?

• FG: But most of the fuel is being smuggled accross the border.

• Facebook NG: Empty brain, Close the border Joor!

• FG: Closes the border

• Facebook NG: Why must you close the border? Do you want to kill their economy? Besides the price of rice has gone up.

• FG: But we now produce rice locally?

Facebook NG: Which useless rice. Show me the plantation.

God is not an hypocrite, so therefore he could not bless a known looter like una Saraki and co

This President of the Senate, who has now become an autocrat in the Red Chamber, declared, “The question of whether we will approve the loan request of the Executive arm of Government? Yes, we will pass it.”

Fanatical Lawan no longer understands the concept of check and balance in a democracy. He is unconscious that we are running a constitutional government and that check and balance must apply. Yes, the legislature does not exist to antagonise the Executive. However, it must effectively and efficiently check the Executive, else, there will be absolutism, as we are now experiencing in Nigeria.

The principle of check and balance has been thrown into the garbage can.No wonder Lawan said he would do anything Buhari requests of him in the Senate. For him, the loan request is a done deal. He cares less if this generation, and indeed, generation yet unborn, would be plunged into stifling debt repayment.

Hmm

To everyone grumbling about how the Senate is a rubber stamp and how we are taking loans...

Let me tell you guys a cold and hard truth.

Nigeria is broke, has always been broke, and is going to continue to be broke.

1.Oil right now is 45 dollars per barrel. We need it at $140 per barrel. In 2012...we needed it at $120 per barrel. That's our breakeven price.

2.So as a result, we are not breaking even. We are not even making enough money to sustain the budget....

3.For those of you that say GEJ should have saved...even if he saved, at best we would have reached $100billion, and by now, most of those savings would have been gone because the oil prices since 2014 cannot sustain us.

4.If we don't take loans, the economic situation would be worse. As in, most Nigerians won't have been paid salaries for years. And essential prices would be at sky high prices.

5.If you want Nigeria to develop, you have to hold your leaders to account. You have to remove subsides, so that we can save money and attract investment and jobs. We have to end useless projects like N-power. We have to cut the bloated civil service and the National assembly, and the cost of governance. We have to spend more on inudstrial output and less on importing stuff.

In other words, leave oil and become industrial.
