The Senate is seeking the revival of Almajiri schools built by former President Goodluck Jonathan, just as it said there is need to integrate Almajiri education into modern educational system in the country.

This is even as Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has lamented that out-of-school children is a big challenge facing Nigeria as a nation.

Specifically, Lawan insist that the problem has constituted both social and security challenges to the country.

The Senate position was revealed in a motion on “The Need to Integrate Almajiri Education into Modern System of Education in Nigeria.” It was sponsored by Senator Adamu Aliero (APC – Kebbi Central).

According to Aliero, “We have more than 14 million out-of-school children, most of them being Almajiri roaming the streets of our major cities in Nigeria begging for alms and food.”

He noted that the past administration of Goodluck Jonathan embarked on a laudable project by building Almajiri integrated model schools in which the Almajiri children were enrolled and given both Islamic and Western education.

However, Aliero lamented that currently, “some of the structures are either laying fallow or put into uses other than what they were originally intended for and some of the facilities in the Almajiri Model Schools are already decaying as they have never been put to use.”

He further  insisted that Almajiri happens to be one of the persons covered by the UBE Act 2004, for the purpose of provision of basic education.

Meanwhile, Lawan said “We all know that the out-of-school-children are at the moment a big problem to us as a country.

“They constitute not only social problems, but also security problems to some  extent.

“Therefore, it is our responsibility to do whatever we can to ensure that they are enrolled in primary and secondary schools,” he stated.

In his contribution, Senator Sabi Aliyu Abdullahi (APC – Niger North) emphasised that the quest to address the problem of out-of-school children should one of the major legislative agenda of the Ninth Senate.

Lol back to square one because Nigeria learn the first time. Almajiris were covered under UBEC yet they did next to nothing for them. They should also tell the police to enforce laws against child abuse.

most of them being Almajiri roaming the streets of our major cities in Nigeria begging for alms and food.”

Why is the koran the only thing you have to turn your kid into a beggar to learn?

Enough to keep your almajiri brothers away from terrorism and make them a bit useful to the society

Of course, you can't answer the question.

It's a shame no one has ever been able to quantify this "laudable' project.

Between December 2010 and May 2015, the Goodluck Jonathan administration embarked on the Almajiri Education Programme which saw to the construction and equipment of 157 Tsangaya (Almajiri) Model Schools across Nigeria.

Where are the pictures of them schools? ...Stop telling lies. Ain't no almajiri schools, maybe that was what GEJ intended but that was not what was on ground.

He might have budgeted and even spent for it but he should look for the minister whom the project was under his domain to explain the reality on ground.

Just like the many projects of pdp it was just for show nd to have something to milk the treasury with but none of the acclaimed schools ever did function (that's if it were properly built in the first place)

If there's no schools how can there be dilapidated schools? In one breath you say there's none in another the schools schools exist but didnt function. You should pick a narrative and stick with it.

Pictures of dilapidated almajiri schools:

Fools are now tired of propaganda and are now telling themselves the truth.

Some northern politicians want the Almajiris to remain impoverished, mentally and materially, so that they will remain willing tools for their heinous acts of herd mentality voting and underage voting too.

They fear if educate this people they will start thinking for themselves and have mind of their own and can't easily be swayed anymore.

They don't know they are doing themselves.

Like Sanusi said, quota system will not remain here forever.

Some Nairaland fools would always flood my mention to advise their generation to move on from GEJ.

But I can't move on from a man that had a master plan for this country. Back it up with realistic and verifiable policies that if continued would have set this country on autopilot in the right direction.

That's what we gave up for lies, propaganda, brutish exercise of power, insecurity and anachronism.

Right now, where is this country headed? No where at all. The fools in power keep sleeping and waking up with no ideas.

But GEJ had short, medium and long term plans for every approach to governance.

I just don't know when my heart is going to stop bleeding for that major error this country committed by voting out GEJ.

So the Nigerian Senate is blabbing abi?

They are pushing for the revival of these schools yet you are here disgracing yourself and displaying your intellectual poverty.

Why not go and ask Ahmed Lawan and Aliero the schools they are talking about?

You are an irredeemable zombie, a grand one at that and that's the reason you think that the senate got so drunk and was talking about reviving inexistent project in the chamber.

I live in Kano, in my area we have a well built and furnished Almajiri school, that has not been in use since it was built by GEJ, looking through the window you see quality chairs and white board and good fans all covered in dust. Any time I pass through the school I feel bad for this country, sentiment will never let us do things right.

Maintenance culture and project continuity is one of our biggest problems. This government will set up a programme or project, another government will come in to abolish or stop it. New government won't give concern to his past government projects because it's not the new government initiatives. It's well!
