PEOPLE who do such feel insecure and less of a human.
I speak my Native Dialect everywhere. I speak it to my relatives and spouse.
In fact, I once taught IGBO Language in Downtown, Los Angeles.

One Day, I visited Nigeria with my spouse, and my DAD asked me, how my accent & and that of my spouse had remained the same despite all these years, that he taught the moment people relocated, they dropped many things including the way they spoke.
I laughed and said, it's better I learn and hear what they are saying than 4 dem to understand everything I say with my people.

MEXICANS, in the US never teach their kids English.
They soak their kids in SPANISH. In fact, they play Spanish songs while driving. They do so because, they know their kids will eventually learn the English at school.
If you are in an international setting or environment. It is important to communicate clearly. When you don't pronounce your words clearly with the English Phonetics you have been taught in school, the same one you encountered in your JAMB and WAEC, they will not understand what you are saying. You will often repeat yourself many times. Even for many native speakers, they are often told to speak slowly and clearly because sometimes regional accents can interfere with proper understanding.

AY spoke standard English ( RP) like one would hear on BBC. As an entertainer with a diverse audience, it is absolutely essential his English is understood by all people. There's nothing inferior about a man who speaks standard, understandable English. You'd not understand how bad the English we speak in Nigeria is until you start conversing with native speakers of English - Americans, Brits, Australians, Canadians, New Zealanders...It is frustrating when you always have to repeat yourself to be understood. I once saw an interview Wizkid did in London. Boy, smashed it! He spoke so beautifully, audibly and with the right intonation, rythm and words stress that for a second I thought I was watching someone else's interview.

When you speak with 9ja accent.. People barely understand shit. They start saying "Can you repeat yourself?", "Come again", "sorry i didn't get what you said" bla bla bla. They don't get it.

It's not their fault. At least someone form Ghana or Cameroon understands me.

So we have to fuse our accent to conform to their understanding. Some people start to speak slower, some pick their words wisely. Because we don't want to lose the conversation or friendship (whatever the case may be)

Personally, i hate when i have to repeat myself all the time. So i switch my accent. Thankfully, I've got a British accent as well. angry grin

You won't understand if you've never conversed with someone of non-african accent.

You've got a British accent as well? How so?

Not true, sometime you have to switch to different version of yourself to help make the other person feel more comfortable

I disagree. You mustn’t speak with your native accent to feel secure and more of a human. That was a terrible thing to say.

If you speak with your native accent, that’s your way of speaking. Lots of people don’t. They speak the way they have been orientated to.

You can easily distinguish Seye Ogunlewe and Ayo Fayose’s accent and the way they pronounce their words. I’ve heard one of them say ‘shildren’ when he meant ‘children’. Ogunlewe might say ‘ouse’ for ‘house’.

Abaribe’s accent is different from Okorocha’s. Ngige is different from Mbadinuju. If your native accent means that you are saying ‘sukulu’ for school, Oga you need to adapt and change.

If Buhari says kwarapshun for corruption, that doesn’t make it right or mean it is ok to do that. If Museveni says ‘dochumenti’ for document, it doesn’t mean Ugandans should embraces duchy because they find it convenient to say that.

I will have to disagree with you on this brother.

First of all, we don't have a Nigerian accent as groups in Nigeria speak English in very distinctive ways... so which one is it that Oyinbo find attractive, Buhari accent, Obasanjo accent or Orji Uzor Kalu accent?

This point I am making is the same for England that has got many different accents, are you telling me people are rating a Scouse accent (Carragher's) the same they would rate Prince William's accent?

Anyway, we don't have a uniform accent, just like the English, so when people are rating our accents they are rating what they hear us speak to them, which is when we drop the local attributes of our accent and try and internationalise it usually by trying to copy the dominant English accent, the US tv acccent.

The British do this too, as no Scouser or Glaswegian will speak with their thick local accents when abroad..... they change their English to the clearer accents. Language is about communication foremost, and though I don't like "funne", it's more than understandable when you are in an international crowd.

Thank you, word for word.

Regardless of who you're speaking with, you won't have to repeat yourself if you speak your English with a polished Nigerian accent. This is because it will follow the dictionary pronunciations and it won't be spoken too fast like some Brits and Americans speak. It doesn't matter if it's a Slovakian, Indian, French man, etc. you're talking to. So long as the person understands English, they will get you clearly.
exactly!!! I have witnessed it with an American,he understood every word I spoke.

Actually with our accent they find it difficult to catch some of the words we say, so we just have to put some phonetics to make them understand better

Nigerians and eye service!

The poster said he was "captured" in a video. Who captured him?

Inferiority complex has finished AY and most Nigerians. The niggarrr deliberately shot the video to brag to his fellow complex Nigerians say em sabi Idris.

AY don't come across to me like a comedian, it's so whack!

How people find him funny still amazes me

Stay there and be talking rubbish. The only thing I agree with you is that AY is a wack comedian. But in terms of show business in Nigeria, he is number 1. You have no idea how big Idris is. AY is just trying to expand his connect. Maybe one day Idris will put him in a Hollywood movie. Check his last statement to Idris: "...check out my movie on Netflix..." If you know, you know.

Mister, I haven’t offended anyone with my post and I do not see the reason why you should be so negative and rude to me.

People speak the way they have been orientated and conditioned to.
It’s wrong to dismiss anyone who doesn’t sound like Zebrudaya, Jegede, Babagana Zulum or Buhari as faking accent.
You can have your native accent and still pronounce Physiology well instead of Pisiology.

I don’t know what your problem is but the only person with inferiority complex here is someone like you with so much negative attitude.

The reason why I change my accent when speaking to a foreigner is because I get tired of the numerous "sorry", "pardon" that they use to fill the conversation when I don't say words the way they understand.

I don't think it's cause it's terrible. They probably find it amusing or something like that. Saying that cause there's this guy I met on pubg, he's American Mexican. We usually voice chat on whatsapp and stuff, and he has told me lots of times that he likes my accent and that it's sexy.

No sir, I'm Yoruba Igbo but I grew up in Lagos most of my life. I've had people comment on my accent even in group chats I'm in. If you speak normally as a Nigerian without any h or whatever factors people with strong culture have, it has a ring to it. There's this prof in my school (in the north) who is a northerner but he studied outside the country, I always loved listening to him cause of his accent. Try listening to Lamido Sanusi speak and you'll see that the accent of well educated northerners is kinda sexy to listen to.
