If she was laughing at your accent, that would’ve been very rude. If I was you, I would’ve stopped in the middle of my introduction and ask her if I had said anything funny.

She wasn't laughing out loud or in a kind of embarrassing way. Let me say she was smiling all through. If one was mocking you by laughing at you, you'll probably know. In my case, I don't think that's the case and everyone heard me clearly throughout the convo.

you no ask her why she dey laugh?

I think it's cause of my Nigerian accent and she wasn't really laughing, more of like a smile. And everyone heard me loud and clearly throughout the conversation. I've had foreigners I converse with tell me they like my accent. Also, there's this American lady I meet on Reddit who was planning on coming to Nigeria, so she needed someone to tell her about the country and stuff. Told her to buzz me on Instagram cause you can't voice chat on Reddit. We ended up video calling and she could hear me clearly. She never asked me to come again or that she didn't get me. So I don't think there's anything wrong with my accent. It's just nouveau to most of them cause they haven't heard people speak that way before.

Houses in the UK are like face me I face you Nigeria unless you are in the top ten per cent. They are small, compacted, thin, close knit and similar like prison blocks. They build houses to structure the minds of the citizens and to make them conform like they are lifers in own their homes.

At all bro, it's the regular Nigerian accent. I don't have any pronunciation factor in my accent. Just the same way normal people who went to God schools speak. Check the comments section for my other replies. cool

Why do most Nigerians feel they need to change their accent when they speak with a foreigner? Nigerian accent is rated as one of the sexiest in the world. People should learn to embrace it.
What they find sexy is the combination of the Nigerian and foreign accent mixed together. It sounds good to them. But to be honest, the PURE Nigerian accent is not attractive and if you communicate with foreigners with the pure Nigerian accent they wouldn't easily understand you. I won't advice anybody to use the PURE Nigerian accent while communicating with foreigners.

don’t let them deceive you. If you do not switch accent, these guys struggle to understand what you say. It’s really sad sometimes

Lol, I don't think she was mocking my accent. She was smiling, not laughing. I had a video chat recently with this American lady who wanted to come into the country. Throughout the call, she never asked me to come again or repeat myself and we spoke for more than 2 hours. So I don't think it's my accent. It's just kinda of nouveau to them, just the same way a regular Nigerian who has never traveled out hears a foreigner speak in person.

I was in a conference video meeting with about 20+ other people on zoom and we were gonna introduce ourselves. Immediately I started speaking (with my normal Nigerian accent), the host (a Swiss lady) started laughing all through the 30 secs I spoke about myself. I guess it's cause of my accent.
I would av stopped to throw subtle shots at her.. Sweden that is not even up 2 half of lagosk terms of population.. Nigeria's GDP (PPP) is almost X3 of that of Sweden..

All right. But funny enough pidgin in Nigeria doesn’t sound similar, it differs throughout regions. When you wrote “ we all speak so distinctively “ that’s where I cut it smiley

AndroBlaze:

It always struck me when I was younger and people will say Nigerian accent, as to me we all speak so distinctively.... anyway when we throw our phonetics or speak pidgin, I think thats the closest we get to Nigerians sounding similar or uniform.

I will have to disagree with you on this brother.

First of all, we don't have a Nigerian accent as groups in Nigeria speak English in very distinctive ways... so which one is it that Oyinbo find attractive, Buhari accent, Obasanjo accent or Orji Uzor Kalu accent?

This point I am making is the same for England that has got many different accents, are you telling me people are rating a Scouse accent (Carragher's) the same they would rate Prince William's accent?

Anyway, we don't have a uniform accent, just like the English, so when people are rating our accents they are rating what they hear us speak to them, which is when we drop the local attributes of our accent and try and internationalise it usually by trying to copy the dominant English accent, the US tv acccent.

The British do this too, as no Scouser or Glaswegian will speak with their thick local accents when abroad..... they change their English to the clearer accents. Language is about communication foremost, and though I don't like "funne", it's more than understandable when you are in an international crowd.

Clearly explained. Nice

I think the accent they mean isnt the natural nigerian accent you know. To be easily understood, we make subtle changes to our accents and (corrections to our) pronounciations when in the diaspora. So, this is the accent they end up praising and thinking is Nigerian, when in fact it is a modified one. Many white folks struggle to understand the natural nigerian accents and even pretend that they do, so as to be polite. So what I have had to do is speak more clearly, watch my intonations and pronounce words correctly(not the nigerian way of pronouncing bird as bed). Although this isnt what AY is doing in that video

They were talking about the yoruba accent when they rated Nigerian accent as sexy. The examples given were sunny ade & omotola.

6. Nigerian

Famous tongues: King Sunny Ade, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde

Dignified, with just a hint of willful naivete, the deep, rich "oh's" and "eh's" of Naija bend the English language without breaking it, arousing tremors in places other languages can't reach.

I wonder how AY would feel if he is a Nairalander; see how folks shifted the main topic of discussion to "Accents of Nigerians in diaspora";-D

Well to me, I have no problem if you try to switch your accent when communicating with Brits or Americans but as a typical naija guy or babe, if you try to switch it when we are having a discussing, it is a big turn off for me. There's a big difference between using the right pronunciation and faking your accent it totally.

But I just love the British accent; I consider the scouse accent the sexiest, just like that Ammunition expert in John Wick: Chapter II, Alfred The Butler in Batman, Idris Elba, Jason Statham, Chris Hemsworth and many more

This is exactly my kind of point, a typical person raised in the north will not use "ohs" and "ehs" while talking like the way we do it in the south. If there is a particular accent Oyinbos like from us, we need to identify it and call it its proper name and not the "Nigerian" accent.

Also I wouldn't really classify Omotola as speaking with what people generally refer to as the "Yoruba" accent. Yes there are accents than when people speak English you know they are Yoruba or heavily influenced by Yoruba, but for example I do not think KSA's and OBJ's accents are the same when speaking English, though I would classify both their accents as being Yoruba influenced.
