The Nigerian Guild of Editors yesterday urged the Federal Government to exempt all categories of media staff from the COVID-19 stay-at-home restriction which takes effect tomorrow. The Guild in a statement by its President, Mustapha Isah and General Secretary, Mary Atolagbe condemned the harassment of drivers of newspaper distribution vans by overzealous security agents in some states.

It noted that media personnel are rendering essential services and journalists should be commended for carrying out their constitutional mandate of sourcing stories and monitoring compliance with government directives in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the world, instead of being harassed. The guild called on governments “that have declared one form of lockdown or the other, being measures to contain the spread of COVID-19, to appropriately educate the security agents drafted to enforce the restrictions, on the essential nature of media duties.”

It expressed worry that “some security agents, who may not be sufficiently knowledgeable about the operations of media houses, may find it difficult to determine the categories of print and electronic staff who cannot work from home.” “In the light of this potential friction, the Guild is calling on the Nigerian Government to exempt all categories of media staff from the COVID-19 stay-at-home restrictions and hereby enjoins journalists to carry their means of identification as they undertake their duties, to eliminate the chances of being harassed by security operatives.”

The guild also noted that Nigeria could not afford a total lockdown at this time, adding, “People should be allowed to move within their neighbourhoods to access Pharmacies, fuel stations and other basic needs.”

But Lai have already said their ID card is their pass?

If not that government refused providing power and data to all Nigerians, would there be need for hardcopy?

And some radio stations which is like the cheapest source of news for the poor can hype stuffs more than football commentators.

This covid 19 have exposed all our weak points.

If Nigerians brains are not formatted towards who we elect during elections after this Covid saga, then no hope for Nigeria till the end of time.

Not as if there is hope though when the stupid ones are in majority.

If they had done their jobs well, people will not be ignorant. As at yesterday so many citizens of this great country , were still asking about the curfew and what need to be done.

I expected all media should repeat in a language , REPEATEDLY, announce current event as it takes place.

As at yesterday i expected the guidlines ..highlighted on our screens on the curfew should be constantly on display. Our local news need very good I.T tech guys to work hand in hand. Using maybe powerpoint or something. No creativity. Forcing us to watch cnn and bbc.

If that be even if you miss the news an hour ago, you can still come back and view it at any giving time. But all i see on our local stations are just talk, talk and talk and interviews from someone that sounds as if he crammed his speech.

The media guys a trying but not good enough in fighting for recognition of their profession(budgeting), on creativity in broadcast(to draw the attention of people) and they should all be united. One person harrassed, everyone feel harrassed and march together.

People are getting mis informed.....petrol station are closed, peole are stampading to the market, people dont know those to move around. People are not well informed.

I switched on the local t.v station they are showing fashion. Swutched on the radio....they are either playing music and advertising land for sale.

LET ME USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO WRITE THIS....

Our journalist....in Nigeria, dont ask the right questions, they dont drill politicians with tackling questions, they dont do real investigative journalism with courage and fact to help bring out and expose potential or intended political candidates, that the people watching, listening may see and then make the right decisions during election or rejection.
Journalist have the most powerful tool in the world and nigerian journalists dont make good use of it to dig out , expose, bring forth information that will make any intending criminal politician think twice before involving him or herself in any political race. Rather Nigeria journalists take , collect , receive "envelops" or bribe and give us the people of this great country half baked or untrue cooked up story to increase and beautify a corrupt politician.

In fact Nigerian journalist are the real problem of this country since 1960. Period.

I can imagine what kind of disaster a single infected newspaper vendor can cause. Please let us use e-media. NEPA has been relatively stable.

Re: Editors Condemn Harassment Of Newspaper Distributors by seunlayi(m): 7:03am On Mar 31, 2020
This is unjust and same way the police are saying street sellers are free to open for business...hmmm,won't it be safer to just suspend all transactions with the street sellers for now because many of them may be careless and start spreading this virus around. An infected seller can infect every household in the street. Better to just be on your own at this time. A male a day while you sit at home during lockdown of 2 weeks can keep one going.... A word for the wise.

Those who are living in remote areas where there's no media ish are actually living happier than those using all sorts of media ish. For instance, I'm so tired right now watching movies where guns are used. The news men starts with "good evening/good morning" then proceed to tell you everything that is not good.... sad cool
