Dora Akunyili betrayed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by defecting to the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Rekiya Haruna Kassim Idris, a governorship candidate in Nasarawa State, has said.

Mrs. Akunyili had resigned as minister of information and communication on December 15 and decamped from the PDP to contest in the 2011 senatorial election in Anambra State.

Her decision, Mrs. Idris said, shows that the former minister did not have confidence in the fortunes of the PDP in her own state and it means that all the while she enjoyed federal appointments, she did not help to build a foundation for the PDP in Anambra State.

“Her attitude is nothing but a betrayal of our party which has spoon-fed her before she could think of contesting a Senate seat,” Mrs. Idris said.

Mrs. Idris, who is a former PDP women leader for north-central zone, said she was shocked by the news of Mrs. Akunyili’s defection.

“She is the same person who betrayed Turai and the late President Umaru Yar’Adua family and it became a point of reminder when she appeared for screening on the floor of the Senate,” Mrs. Idris said.

The governorship candidate also criticised the wife of the president, Patience Jonathan, for not doing enough to promote the ambition of female politicians.

“We, the women who worked for the First Lady and her husband, have been neglected. Her pet project, Women for Change Initiative, has not benefitted women outside of political offices. All she has been doing is to work only with those at the top political offices, like Akunyili. Now, one of them has opened her eyes,” she said.
