ABUJA—The Federal Government’s quest to contain the coronavirus pandemic through a 14 – day lockdown of Lagos, Ogun State and Abuja appears to be taking its toll on the nation’s revenue as banks’ closure continue to hamper ports operations.

Expressing his displeasure at the non operation of banks, Dr. Ola Olugbese, Chairman, Ogbese Marine Services Limited, a licensed Customs agent, stated that the federal government may have lost not less than N20 billion in the last seven days due to non operation of the banks in the ports. “Due to the lockdown caused by Covid-19 pandemic, banks were closed. Government needs revenue. That is why Customs was mandated to work as the ports remain open. Unfortunately, government forgot that Customs work hand in hand with banks. Customs does not accept cash from importers or agents except bank draft. If banks are not working, how can government generate revenue?”, he asked.

Olugbese called on the federal government to mandate banks to offer at least skeletal services so as ease the difficulty being encountered by importers and agents.

According to Olugbese, importers and agents are stranded, just as government is losing billions of Naira as a result of non operation of banks. “No new Form M can be opened. Form M is part of the documents needed to import goods into the country. It is generated from the banks. Only those who paid before the lockdown are the ones taking possession of their goods. Every other person is stuck. Banks should be allowed to operate”, he said. He also urged the government not to prolong the lockdown as been speculated. “If the lockdown is prolonged, the maritime sector will be the worst hit.

The government revenue will be diminished drastically. Lockdown has affected negatively operations in the ports. We all know that apart from oil, Customs is the second revenue earner for government. We urge the government to mandate the banks to operate so as to ease the difficulty being experienced by importers and agents at the ports,” he added.

Goodness me!
You can imagine the amount these guys were raking in, in just 7days from the port alone. Yet we are very poor to rollout palliative for the close down. Thank God for the coming of the Coronavirus. Expect more revelation in coming days.

So they cant use online means abi?

Its because we have thieves in govt, why can’t payment n verification be done electronically? Other serious countries do?

Take for instance, FAAN, they made sure they sabotaged the e-flight plan mechanism so that airlines will continue to file Flightplan manually to date. Where in the world is this done?

You cant believe that NCAA still uses hunt-n-peck typewriters to print pilot’s license in Nigeria till date!

Really sad when you have abokis in places they shouldn’t be

Normal Nigerians were in a position to engage in capitalism and thus learn that they only needed federal government to get out of their way. The worst economy in our lifetimes, the highest unemployment rate ever, and 7M unfilled stomach infrastructures. The elite couldn't have THAT! Remember when we did this for Ebola? No, you don't.

We're coming back you bastards.
Banks hold money and make money by loaning mostly other people's money. Who has the money to put into banks at a significant rate and amount, insurance companies. Companies who gather money from everyone for something that may happen or won't happen and pay out as little as possible when it happens and insurance payments aren't kept in a shoebox under some executive's bed, it goes to the bank where it gains interest as loans. Without insurance companies probably most large banks wouldn't be large banks.
Well maybe printing up money out of thin air will cause the collapse and hyper inflation

We’re either about to see the one of the seven heads of the beast killed or we’re about to see the third horseman of the apocalypse come to light

hmmm... with the way economy and money value works, any productivity/GDP lost reflects directly on the exchange rate compared to other currency depreciation and recovery.

Sad... unfortunately this is another reason/season of looting and lying to to the people.
Nigerian government/politicians always look for an opportunity to steal money and play the blame game.
Unfortunately Nigerians have not woken up to their responsibilities. They don't even know their right in the first place or rather, they prefer to hide back at home behind their keyboards to protest about their poor condition of living.

***Nothing will change until u decide and implement a change***
***Nothing is working in Nigeria***
***We need to change everything***
***If we don't make that change, it will get worse***
***No change, No future 4 Nigeria***

Yes, you are...no importer can send money abroad as we speak. All the outward forex windows, both Form M and Form Q have been shut down by the CBN. Medical equipment dealers can't rescue covid-19 patients with ventilators because there's no means of wiring funds abroad to various manufactures. Our govt are jokers.

As long as we joined to the Northerners, Nigeria can't have any meaningful progress. They are holding the rest of the country back in a lot of ways !

If all these payments are done electronically, they won't have the opportunity to embezzle, so they would definitely object to growth or development in any way. Nigeria is a sad tale... The next government has a lot of work to do. A lot of changes has to be made !
