As a result of this lockdown, boredom became too much and I went fishing in a nearby water behind my building here in ago, Lagos State.

Fortunately I caught this little, innocent and shy animal.

It's my new pet

It's definitely not a tortoise, they are easily identfiable by their bulky rough shells and stubby feet. Most importantly they're terrestrial i.e they live on land.

The Shell of the animal you found is smooth and streamline; designed for swimming and underwater life. That leaves us with two options;
1) it's a Terrapin
Or
2) it's a turtle.

To narrow it further I'll have to see the full body of the animal.

Although terrapins and turtles look (almost) the same,in my experience there's a difference between the two, in their feet. Simply put turtles have flat flippers for feet while terrapins have (mostly) taloned feet.

Until we can settle the discrepancies by seeing the full body of the animal I believe it's safe to call it a turtle.

If it has flippers for feet, it is a turtle.
But I see it has toenails/claws... It’s a tortoise.
Please don’t eat it, it’s endangered as it is.
We have them too in the creeks, but we leave them.

But if it’s a Monitor Lizard, that’s a different story: Kill ‘em and make a meal.
( Those reptiles are an invasive species)

Turtle, don't keep it as a pet, release it back into it's natural habitat. They find it difficult surviving in captivity

I once had a tortoise. It began to fall sick. I let it out back to the wild. Sometimes, having an exotic animal as a pet is cute but, awesome people do what is in it's best interest, not theirs.

CHAI! WHICH SCHOOL YOU GO??

Turtles and tortoises are closely related. They are both reptiles from the same family (Testudines or Chelonian). The main difference between the two is that turtle is the name given to water-dwellers and tortoise is the name given to land-dwellers. ... Its shell is lighter and more streamlined than that of a tortoise.
turtles can't hide in shells

Tortoises are terrestrial.

Turtles are aquatic

You caught it close to a body of water so it is a turtle...

That isn't enough...

It has a smooth leather-like black shell so it is a turtle... Tortoises have rough mostly multicolored hard shells.

Please!!! Most species of turtles are endangered. You can make a difference by releasing this young animal back into the water. Please support conservation... You can research more about the status of turtles... Thanks

Do you need an article (Research, Proposal, News, Academic, etc) writer? Do send a mail to ero2writes@gmail.com. If you're TB and you need a B, contact as well... Thanks

Bros u took time to write all this about what you knew next to nothing about. Tortoise shell only become multi coloured(White & Black patches) due to old age. Furthermore Tortoises live on water though there is another specie of Tortoise that live on Land. The picture above is a Tortoise 1000%
