Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, says all oil workers seeking to come into the state must get the government’s permit and present their coronavirus “status” before they can be allowed entry.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Simeon Nwakaudu, which was posted on Facebook.

According to Nwakaudu, the governor alleged that the latest of the coronavirus cases recorded in the state was flown into Port Harcourt by Bristow Helicopters from an offshore oilfield facility in Akwa Ibom State on the 29th of April 2020.

The statement read in part, “Given the threat posed to the state by oil and gas company workers, it has reviewed all entry waivers and permits earlier granted to oil and gas companies.

“From now on, requests for waivers and entry permits from oil and gas companies will be considered on a case by case basis;

“All inward-bound vehicles and flights into Rivers State from oil and gas companies with workers for crew change or other essential operations must first submit details of their manifests to the State’s Taskforce on COVID-19 for proper vetting of their virus status before they can be allowed to enter the state.

“As a government, we cannot abdicate this compelling responsibility and abandon our people to chances in the midst of this much dreaded and ravaging pandemic.”

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control as of Sunday night, 14 COVID-19 infections have so far been reported in the state.

Rivers youths protest planned relocation of Shell to Lagos

Members of Rivers Youths State Federation protesting against alleged relocation of SNEPCO to Lagos, on Friday.

Youths under the aegis of the Rivers Youth State Federation (RSYF) on Friday staged a protest at the Logistics Base of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO) over an alleged plan by the company to relocate its business to Lagos.

Saviour Patrick, president of Rivers Youth State Federation (RSYF), who led the peaceful protest, said the fresh move by SNEPCO to move out of Rivers State will lead to significant job loss in the state and render many members of his group idle.

It was observed that the protesting youths observed strict social distancing and wore nose masks during the protest.

A letter delivered to the company by the youths during the protest, and signed by Patrick and RSYF secretary general, Bishop Abhili Tam, reads: “Our attention has been drawn to your recent plans of relocating to Lagos State of Nigeria from Onne Port in spite COVID-19 lockdown without informing your host community in a clear term as to your reason.

Apart from businesses moving to Lagos, Rivers is not generating new investments because of hostile and poor business environment, but also because of state sponsor violence, cultism and criminal activities.

When your have the highest unemployment rate in Nigerian, you should not be hostile and unwelcoming, you should be doing everything in your power to welcome businesses and even work with them to resolves issues and potential conflicts.

Wike is too crude, crass and thoughtless to be a governor.
