Former governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose, has raised the alarm over the 'increasing wave of violence' in the state.

The former governor said this in a statement made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday.

Fayose, who is a chieftain of the Labour Party, said it was alarming that politicians could be arming thugs and parading them openly on the streets.

He said thuggery portended danger to the April elections in the state.

He said the level of violence, which greeted primary elections of various parties in the state, was a cause for concern.

He called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, to ensure that thugs were not allowed to molest the people of the state.

He said political thugs would always resort to armed robbery after being used and dumped by their 'employers.'

The former governor also called on politicians not to set the state on fire by their action, saying violence would never solve any problem.

Fayose said the money paid to thugs could be used to improve the lives of the suffering masses of the state.

He said, "The way politicians in the state now use thugs to terrorise the people is very dangerous. This is an indication that the 2011 elections may be marred with violence. Arming thugs is worse than armed robbery. "If politicians could be this dangerous during primary election which is 'party affair' one can imagine how dangerous the general elections will be."

He urged defeated aspirants to concede defeat and embrace the winners so that there could be peace in the state.

He also advised the people of the state to be prayerful in order to avoid electing corrupt people.
