UPDATE: 10 takeaways from today’s briefing by the Lagos Commissioner for Health, @ProfAkinAbayomi, on the Lagos COVID-19 response.
#Covid19Lagos

1. Lagos State Govt has tested 16,000 suspected cases of #COVID19 since the outbreak of the pandemic in Nigeria. The highest in the country.

2. The cost of testing a patient ranges between N40,000 and N50,000. It is free for patients and Government bears the cost. Efforts are on to get the cost subsidised through Insurance or donations by aid partners.

3. Due to global shortage of reagents used in testing, Lagos Govt has contacted local scientists to produce alternatives. Two of the scarce reagents have been produced locally, thereby taking the pressure of chasing manufacturers of reagents overseas.

4. With the availability of reagents, Lagos to commence 1,000 tests per day on the coming days.

5. Lagos is about to roll out HydroxylChloroquine trial

6. Lagos will be validating a rapid-testing model, which will give hospitals the opportunity to test any person coming to the medical facility under 10 minutes. Some manufacturers have been engaged for this activity.

7. LASG is reviewing Bio-Security Emergency Preparedness Plan that will enable the State to ramp up capacity of its healthcare system & emergency response for future pandemic(s). This plan will raise Government’s capacity in controlling water-borne, airborne infectious diseases.

8. Post COVID, Lagos will be looking at urban renewal plan that will ensure people don’t live in a way that aid the spread of infectious diseases.

9. COVID-19 is NOT a death sentence; there’s high recovery rate, except there’s underlying health issue.

10. The Government is anxious to slowly reactivate the economy but residents must be coronavirus-conscious in their dealings.

Point 6 is extremely important.

Many people with disease conditions that have symptoms resembling covid 19 such as heart failure, pulmonary edema in those with advanced kidney failure, etc are being turned back from hospitals due to fear of covid 19, basically sending these patients to go and die at home. A pity.

In all, prevention is better than cure. I believe this is not Government contract price. It means that the economy will surely feel the effect of covid19.

Thats why you see those imaginery numbers of people that have covid 19. they say 209 yesterday,304 today and 182 tomorrow. Then you will hear 16 have been cured and sent back to society. so each name is worth 50k oboy this wan pass yankee tax scam.No picture or Id needed so you people now see that in this country we really need help. We cant give people at least 10k to soften the financial effects of covid 19 but we can charge them 50k to test for covid 19. See what i said ooo test for 50k not cure for 50k.

This one is actually true.
One of my cousin working in one of the testing center in Lagos told me the cost of testing is around 50k.

2. The cost of testing a patient ranges between N40,000 and N50,000.

And NCDC is the only authorized body to do the testing. No wonder the number of positive cases increases on per second basis.

They forgot to tell us the amount used to treat a patient.

If you know, you know.
