Nwodo faces sack
Headlines Jan 18, 2011 By JIDE AJANI, EDITOR NORTHERN OPERATIONS, EMMANUEL AZIKEN, UMORU HENRY & TONY EDIKE

ABUJA—THE National Executive Committee, NEC, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is today set to oust its National Chairman, Dr. Okwesileze Nwodo, barring a last minute intervention from President Goodluck Jonathan.

The move was apace last night even as the embattled National Chairman was himself banking on a reprieve which could offer him a soft landing. The decision to remove Nwodo as National Chairman was agreed at a consultation on Sunday night during which his macabre intervention into the proceedings of the party’s national convention, Thursday evening, was reviewed in strong negatives.

With Nwodo’s hold on the leadership hanging on a knife edge, his antagonists including members of the National Working Committee, NWC, governors, particularly his home governor, Sullivan Chime, were sharpening the arrows against him with the articulation of his alleged impersonal dealing with party officials and members.

The chairman was himself banking on a last minute intervention from President Jonathan at the end of a consultation meeting in the Presidential Villa. The consultation with party chieftains and stakeholders was ongoing as at last night leaving permutations on the prospects of Nwodo remaining in office in the balance.

Quarrel with Gov Chime

Dr. Okwesileze Nwodo
Vanguard gathered last night that Nwodo’s problems have spread beyond his quarrell with Governor Chime of Enugu State over control of the State chapter of the party into personality problems with members of the NWC which climaxed with what party officials said yesterday was his strange appearance at the national convention.

Nwodo, it was learnt had been implored by NWC members prior to last Thursday’s national convention not to make an appearance at the convention on account of the Enugu High Court order which had barred him from parading himself as the national chairman of the party.

But Nwodo’s sudden appearance and his attempt to take charge of the convention was read as an act of sabotage suggestive of a deliberate attempt at upturning the progress of the convention and possibly putting the nomination of the President in legal jeopardy.

Following the convention, party chieftains on Sunday night at a consultative meeting reportedly resolved to move against Nwodo whose seven month stewardship of the party has itself been characterized with internal disharmony both at the NWC and in dealings between the national executive and the state chapters of the party.

Grievances against Nwodo

Indeed, part of the grievance against Nwodo, Vanguard learnt, yesterday, is his unilateral dealing of issues which party executives said had severally put the party in bad light.

However, the kernel of the action that may lead to the removal of the national chairman, Vanguard learnt was the resolution of the Southeast zonal executive passing a vote of no confidence on the national chairman.

The Southeast executive had on Sunday passed a resolution calling on Nwodo to be removed from office.

A state party chairman on his way back to Abuja for the emergency meeting said yesterday: “If his people say they do not want him, then what can we do? His problem started principally from home but it has spread to a national problem as he equally does not relate well with members of the NWC and even with us State chairmen. He does not seem to regard us well too.”

A prominent party member from Enugu was equally adamant saying that Nwodo had messed up the party saying he would equally canvass for the removal of the national chairman at today’s NEC meeting.

Vanguard learnt that Nwodo’s problems were well articulated at the Sunday meeting to the point that the national chairman may have become a serious liability to the party and its presidential candidate.

Besides, party chieftains are hoping to use the Nwodo faux pas as a channel to redress the seeming imbalance in the polity in a way to allow the position of National Chairman rezoned to the North. The acting National Chairman and substantive Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed, is from the Northwest, a part of the country where the President got the least of his votes during the last party convention.

Resolution of S-East caucus

It was being speculated last night that unless the President intervenes, today’s NEC could adopt the resolution of the Southeast caucus passing a vote of no confidence on Nwodo.

Part of the communiqué which was signed by the zonal secretary, Mr. Vincent Okpareke, read: “We hereby pass a vote of no confidence on Dr. Nwodo and ask him to resign his chairmanship of the party, and that if he fails the National Executive Committee of our party should expel him from the party.

“We condemn without reservation the ignoble conduct of the suspended National Chairman of our party, Dr. Nwodo, who by flagrantly disregarding the party’s constitution, disobeyed a valid court order by showing up at the special convention and lying to the convention that the order had been vacated, brought shame and embarrassment to the party and therefore us, his kinsmen and women.

“The zone apologises to the country for this calamitous behaviour of Dr. Nwodo in deliberately and wilfully attempting to void the special convention by not only showing up but forcibly taking over the officiating at the convention before he was overpowered and subdued.”

The communiqué appealed to PDP members in the country “who have deserted the party especially National Assembly members and party stalwarts in Oyo, Osun, Plateau, Anambra, Adamawa and other states, since Dr. Nwodo unleashed his high_handedness on nearly every state chapter of the party, seeking to hand_pick candidates without going through the process of primaries to return to the party.”

The communiqué equally jettisoned Nwodo, their son and declared support for the acting National Chairman, Alhaji Mohammed Bello to run the affairs of the party pending the emergence of another chairman from the South East acceptable to the party members.

Overwhelming endorsement

They restated their overwhelming endorsement of President Jonathan’s candidacy and “our firm belief that he with the Vice President, His Excellency, Architect Namadi Sambo, possess the experience, education and sufficient knowledge of Nigeria’s problems to be able to pilot the country to the next level of her development.”

Reacting to the meeting, the embattled National Chairman, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo said that the South East zone meeting was not properly constituted.

Nwodo who spoke through his Special Assistant, Media, Ike Abonyi, Nwodo said: “They didn’t call the meeting properly. How many governors were there? How many senators and House of Representative members were there? It was not attended by any governor except Sullivan Chime.

“Their meeting is political. It has no legal implications and they don’t have the powers to remove the national chairman.”
Meanwhile, the apex Igbo socio_cultural Organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday, initiated moves to resolve the crisis that has pitted some Igbo political leaders against Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo leading to the demand for his removal from office.

Character assassination

Some stakeholders of PDP in the South East Zone also condemned the attempt by a few individuals in the zone to assassinate the character of the PDP National Chairman by mounting campaign of calumny against him just as they accused those who lost their bid to secure the party’s ticket as responsible for the plot to unseat Dr. Nwodo.

Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, Chief Olisa Metu who is the national vice chairman of the party in the South East as well as two deputy governors were among the leaders who met in Enugu and passed a vote of no confidence on Nwodo, Sunday, saying he flouted the Enugu High Court order made on the eve of the national convention of the PDP, restraining him from operating as the national chairman of the party .

President_General of Ohanaeze, Ambassador Ralph Uwechue who spoke on the move against Nwodo by some leaders of PDP in the South East zone, said: “Already, we are trying to reach out to certain persons involved in this latest crisis to see how we resolve it.

“We need unity of Ndigbo in all ramifications and certainly, what has happened now does not portray that we are united. We don’t have the details yet of what happened on Sunday but the effect has shown that we have a problem militating against our unity and it is not good that this is happening.”

Expressing regrets over the development, Uwechue noted that “any sign of disunity that is made public concerning Ndigbo is not good news. We would want such matters concerning our people to be settled within our fold and not to be treated publicly like this one.
“We are not taking sides but this is creating bad impression about our people. It shows there is open disunity.

And it is not good for those involved and Ndigbo generally, hence, we want a situation where a level of understanding should be reached on this matter.”

It was gathered that Uwechue had been held up in consultations on the matter for the greater part of yesterday and only took a short break from his meetings to speak to reporters who were waiting for the outcome of his talks with the parties.

Meanwhile, South East stakeholders of PDP said in a statement issued in Enugu that the call on the National Working Committee of the party by a section of the zonal executive committee to remove Nwodo from office was uncalled for and urged the NWC to disregard it.

Zonal executive committee statement

In the statement signed by nine members of the Zonal Executive Committee of the party including Barrister Okonkwo Emmanuel, Chief Pius Onwe, Hon. Uzo Okere, Chief Mrs Eugenia Ewereuzo, Chief Mrs. E.O. Nwankwu, Barrister John Aneke, Hon. Ikechukwu Mba, Dr. Eugene Mbamalu, Hon. Agbo Egenti and Mrs. Agnes Egbo, the stakeholders said: “We wish to state that this is not the decision of the entire Zonal Executive Committee, but that of some individuals from the zone who lost out in the recently concluded party primaries with themselves or their surrogates who failed to make it.

“We also advice that if they feel that the National Chairman erred in any form, he should be given fair hearing as provided by the constitution of our great party, PDP instead of washing our dirty lines on the pages of newspapers. We also, therefore, call on the NWC of our great party to disregard this unwarranted call for the removal of Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo in the interest of peace and oneness in the party. The discerning public should also ignore this call.

“Finally, we wish to state further that if they continue with their evil plans, we will be left with no option than to mobilize all true Igbo sons and daughters to resist this act of intimidation and political hooliganism.”

Nwodo should be left alone.

Some eediots are trying to ridicule the SE before the whole nation. If he was good enough to replace Ogbulafor, then he must be good now, I don't care his faults now. They should have thought about that before removing Ogbulafor.  undecided

I campaigned vigorously against Ogbulafors ouster, and I will still campaign against Nwodo's ouster.
This is part of why I caution my people against unbridled republicanism.
It won't serve us well in Nigeria.  undecided

The execution of his removal is so clinical! Starting with the court action on the eve of the primaries, the man must have felt as dazed as someone worked over by a heavyweight boxing champ!

Nwodo had been formenting problems in all the state, because he was working tirelessly for Atiku. But he was very foolish to start fires in his own state, now he has been rejected by his own people. I think we might see the likes of Anyim taking over in the long run.

All these shuffling of PDP Chairmen from SE is an insult on Ndigbo if it is being orchestrated by GEJ. I really hope that this is a local Enugu state stuff which Ohanaeze should soon cage.
Ndigbo don't gain anything by being presented as fractious.
Characters like Ekweremadu is only after HIS OWN political fortunes and don't give a rat a55 about Ndigbo.

Ohanaeze and other PDP members are already voicing concerns, and all those concerns should be considered.

Jonathan, Nwodo in crucial talks

, As president summons South-east PDP govs
From MODESTUS CHUKWULAKA and Taiwo Amodu, Abuja
Tuesday, January 18, 2011

President Goodluck Jonathan held crucial talks with the embattled national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), John Nwodo yesterday morning in a bid to stem the brewing crisis of leadership in the party, less than 24 hours after Sunday’s call for Nwodo’s resignation by a section of the party leaders in the South-east.

Yesterday’s breakfast hour meeting which held at the Aso Rock Villa was said to have provided Nwodo an opportunity to present his own side of the story, particularly in respect of insinuations that he worked in the interest of former vice president Atiku Abubakar during the run up to the PDP primaries.

Daily Sun learnt that one outcome of the meeting of yesterday morning was Jonathan’s decision to host an enlarged meeting on the relevant parties in the crisis to be attended by himself, the vice president, Nwodo and some other unnamed party stalwarts. The meeting was scheduled to hold last night through to the early hours of today.

Jonathan was also slated to meet yesterday with the four PDP governors from the South-east along with the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, the people described as the brain behind the move to remove Nwodo from office.
It was not clear as at the time of filing this report whether the meeting with the governors and Ekweremadu would eventually be subsumed in the enlarged meeting, which Jonathan had ordered after his meeting with Nwodo
However, it was learnt that while at the State House on Monday morning, the PDP national chairman was able to put his case through to the Jonathan.

“There was nothing new except the old stories that have been making the rounds,” a source close to the meeting said, adding that Nwodo was insisting that there was no way he could have worked against the interest of Jonathan in the presidential primaries when the method that swung the momentum in his favour was basically his idea.

The call for Nwodo’s resignation made by the group which called itself South-east stakeholders of the PDP after a meeting in Enugu on Sunday came on the heels of a court injunction restraining Nwodo from parading himself as the national chairman of the party, just hours before last week’s presidential primaries.
Jonathan is said to be worried that the crisis if not arrested now might fester into a big sore that could jeopardize the chances of the party in the run up to the April presidential polls.

“The president is going to intervene in the next 24 hours. I can tell you that the crisis will take a definite direction in the next 24 hours,” the source said.
Meanwhile, the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which is slated for today, according to the source was to perfect the plot for the dislodgment of Nwodo. There were strong indications that the party’s NEC may ratify the vote-of-no-confidence passed on him by the South-east chapter of the party.
Reacting to the call for Nwodo’s resignation by a section of South-east PDP leaders, Senator Annie Okonkwo of Anambra Central described the action as “a needless de-marketing of the Igbo man’s viable political integrity.”

Okonkwo, who reacted through a statement from his Special Assistant, Media, Mr. Collins Steve Ugwu, cautioned that “as 2015 steadily approaches with enhanced opportunities for the South-east political stock, the shameful revelry in public which demean Igbo leaders at the slightest prompting, must give way to the efficacy of common sense and good faith in negotiation.”

The senator, who had earlier secured a High Court injunction restraining anyone from usurping the powers and privileges of the national chairman, queried, “how can one rationalize the orgy to undermine and ridicule the occupant of the highest office in PDP, given to the South-east at great expense, and popularly endorsed by us all in less than one year of service.

“I accept that intra and inter political disagreements are inevitable, especially at times like this but, we must persist and insist on the path of resolution through negotiation and compromise, not naked denigration.
“We cannot pretend to have quickly forgotten that the South-east PDP presented and vigorously defended Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo’s candidature as the best man for chairmanship on the basis of integrity, experience, and capacity. Now, a disenchanted section is calling for his resignation or expulsion, and happily dramatizing preferred allegiance to his immediate subordinate. How very sad and petty indeed?”

So, basically if I were GEJ I would save Nwodo (for a one good turn deserves another moment in the future), and whip Ekweremadu and crew in line. This is smart politics.
He should not sacrifice the love and loyalty of millions of Igbos to please ten thieving PDP elements in Enugu state. undecided

The PDP primaries are over. He won! cool Time to exert his authority on the party.

He should save Nwodo. Simple.
Re: Nwodo: Going. . . Going. . . Gone! by KaluAkanu: 6:37am On Jan 18, 2011
Nwodo has been frustrating Sullivan Chime to the point, that he has thought about leaving the PDP platform. I believe Nwodo brought this on himself. The was he acted towards Sullivan Chime was reprehensible.
Re: Nwodo: Going. . . Going. . . Gone! by Onlytruth(m): 6:39am On Jan 18, 2011
I agree that Nwodo has been overreaching himself by messing with local Enugu state politics, but which party chairman didn't do same?
The picture now should be on the presidential elections.
GEJ should focus on that.
Re: Nwodo: Going. . . Going. . . Gone! by KaluAkanu: 6:46am On Jan 18, 2011
Nwodo needs to learn either way. Anyim Pius Anyim should have been selected instead of Nwodo. Dr. Nwodo came into that office with a lot of bitterness and anger. The first person he faced was Sullivan Chime, in which he wanted to hijack the party. This man will cause us to lose this position to another zone with his interference in the local chapters of Enugu State. Let us not discuss his irrational behavior during the PDP convention and the lies he told South-East delegates.

I don't know about the "one good turn" part, because Nwodo was scheming to deliver to Atiku, that is why there were avoidable problems (that could be milked) from Ogun to Enugu. It is surely not about pleasing a few people in Enugu, they just happen to be spectators in a game played around them.
You are right that only GEJ can save him now, but I doubt that will happen, because some sins are just too big.

If you are Igbo, please always try to view things from the national perspective. We are not the only ones in Nigeria.

This is NOT about Nwodo now. It is about Ndigbo.

They should leave him alone.

Nwodo dug his own grave. Now he needs to lie in it. GEJ should not save him. And I wouldn't blame GEJ for not saving him. Nwodo picked a losing side and now he has to suffer the consequences.

It is Igbo politicians like him, who give the rest of the Igbo people a bad name. We do not speak with one voice as he clearly illustrated for all of Nigeria to see. This is unforgivable.

No, he isn't allowed to commit murder on the job. From an Igbo perspective, I would be very concerned if just one man attempted to ambush the direction the whole of Igbo land had so resoundingly decided to move in.
GEJ has a way of thinking that is far sighted and diplomatic, so I cannot say for certain how things would go by the end of the day, but it looks bleak for Nwodo.

I am not Beaf, I just think Nwodo is a fool . He picked with one of my favorite South-East governors, which I find disgusting. Sullivan Chime is the closest thing to Fashola that we Igbos have.

Nwodo falls in a long line of Igbo politicians who only care about themselves instead of wider Ndi Igbo. That is reprehensible in my opinion. Just think for a second and understand the damage that Nwodo has done to the Igbo cause.

Well, we shall see.
All I know is that there is no way this bodes well for Ndigbo.

When they (GEJ and some Igbo hawks) wanted to remove Ogbulafor, they did not take care to pick a befitting replacement.

The whole thing is a juvenile game IMHO. Any smart Igbo would see an attempt to paint us in bad light.  undecided

Firstly, why didn't they pick Anyim?
Who also told you that Anyim's agenda would align with that of other Igbos gunning for his post, or GEJ who may be trying to divide Ndigbo for whatever personal reasons?

Sorry, I am not convinced.

Maybe I am arguing blindly, because I do not like how he was treating Sullivan Chime. He just left a bad taste in my mouth by his shenanigans. Especially, with his involvement with Atiku, but that is another story.

Honestly, I do not think GEJ would save Nwodo. If GEJ saves Nwodo, it may show people that GEJ has mercy for his enemies. And by giving mercy to Nwodo, he will gain an ally, because Nwodo would understand that GEJ gave him another chance. That is the smart thing GEJ could do, but I doubt he will do it. However, we may all be surprised.

Why should he set millions of tongues wagging in Igboland just to please Ekweremadu and Chime?
They recommended Nwodo before, didn't they?
They should live with it.
As for GEJ, he is presently enjoying a cult-like following in Igboland. He shouldn't risk that.

Onlytruth, so what do you expect to happen though? I think Nwodo's chances of retaining his position is quite slim. And I also see the chance of having another Igbo man replace him will be out of the question. This is my greatest fear. Shame on Nwodo for putting us in this predicament. All he had to do was stop meddling in other people's affairs.

So very funny grin
Now some law-abiding corrupt politician wants Nwodo punished for not obeying an obviously politically motivated court order issued within 20-hrs of the convention?
Jonathan will be a fool to listen to the wolves from Enugu who suddenly now have a serious need to obey a rogue court injunction.

The whole thing is more than meets the eyes, but I like GEJ so I would give him a break.

Having said that, I don't expect Nwodo to be ousted because of the points I made, unless there is a juicier position in the pipeline for Ndigbo in exchange for that useless post.
Frankly, that PDP chairmanship is nonsense. They can give it to whoever, I don't care.

We need a strong political post in Nigeria. That PDP chairmanship is OBJ's insult on Ndigbo.

Of course it was a major insult to the Ndi Igbo. In all honest, the selection of GEJ was an insult to the Ndi Igbo at the time, but now I think it was a blessing in disguise. I feel that he will focus on not only improving the Niger Delta, but the East in general.

If for no other offence, he should be removed for his interruption into the proceedings of the convention and trying to sabotage the election of GEJ when there was an existing court order restraining him from parading himself as Chairman.

Good move I say

I really doubt many will side with Nwodo on this, although I am beginning to see things from your point of view, I believe your reasons aren't strong enough for GEJ to forgive what he did. Its gonna be really tough for Nwodo, however it might also present an opportunity to score other goals with the party makeup.
Re: Nwodo: Going. . . Going. . . Gone! by Nobody: 9:46am On Jan 18, 2011
The only crime that Nwodo committed was trying to stop the culture of impossition of candidates that runs deep in PDP. All of a sudden the coward and snake Ekweremadu has started wagging tongues because he feels the carpet is falling off Nwodo's feet. Some days back he was the one begging to return for the THIRD time to d senate because he was born to be a permanent member of the senate.  How can Ekweremadu explain his overnight riches? Buying up every available/unavailable property in Enugu. A senator who has successively impossed his younger blood brother as Aninri LGA chairman twice. For dudes who dont know the younger Ekweremadu is still there now.Ekweremadu is certainly no match to Nwodo character-wise.

We can only watch.

HEAR WHAT SOME RIGHT-THINKING IGBOS SAID:

Igbo political leaders should cover their face in shame for not been able to protect their own. David Mark completed 4 yrs as senate president but Igbo produce 4 in 4 years. Shame!! they will produce more than 4 PDP chairmen in one year. Great Nation Great Igbo what a shame.

It’s a recurring think with these Igbo politicians. Everytime, they castigate their own while other tribes try to white wash theirs. Every one now regards them as unserious people, and this will definitely affect in future elections. Every tribe has at least one man standing, who is standing for Igbp cause?

I'm Igbo n from Enugu. Nwodo should go!

If others will encourage misconducts in name of preserving 'their own' and we won't, let it be. If keeping people on their toes will bring out best in dem, so be it. Israelis n Japanese govts have some of d highest leadership turnover yet run more successful governments dn likes of Nigeria n Cameroon. So what's d problem wt d eastern govts showing high turnovers in sync wt d cultural influence? If dt helps dem to always hav their best interest representation, dn so b it! D westerners n other parts r fully entitled to find their own rythms equally. D bankole dt Ws protected by his people is same dt went on boxing bout wt equally shameless state gov over commissioning of an uncompleted bridge project in Ota. What other major benefits did his state enjoy from his uninterrupted position? I would rather have high representative turn over wt results dn hav an sitting duck.

On Nwodo, isn't d cause of feud between him and d gov d fact dt he's Tryn to create a dynasty of his family and cronies in d state? Before his emergence as chairman, he lobbied a senatorial position for his wife wc d gov agreed to. Later, d chairmanship position wc d gov backed him and heavily influenced. When he became d chairman, he asked for a house of rep seat for another family member wc d gov turned down, hence d start of problem. At least, ds is d account I got frm a state PDP stalwart.

Going by above, wouldn't ejection of Nwodo b a good riddance? I wld like to hav a contrary account for a balanced view if there is any.
