Why will you blame the youths, when we apply for these STEM courses, because we don't have money or someone we know in these institutions, they end up giving us irrelevant courses or denying us admission outrightly.

SpaceX in collaboration with NASA and the United States have sent a 2-man crew to the International Space Station.

Here's my take:

1. The United States has recorded a ground-breaking achievement in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic. US recorded one of the highest deaths but this did not deter them from reaching this height.

2. Nigerian politicians have messed up our country. That's a fact! I can't emphasize more on this.

3. Nigerian youths will crowd this forum to bash and castigate the government for not making us great. 50-60% of youths blame the government for joblessness but the same youths refuse to study relevant courses in the tertiary institution that will earn them a chance to Excel in life or contribute to the advancement of the nation. The scientists at NASA are engineers, physicists, mathematicians, economist's, chemists, aerospace scientists, etc. Even Elon Musk himself is a renowned physicist.

NIGERIAN youths will earn degrees in religious and cultural studies, social studies, theatre arts, pre-primary education, etc. and still come to Nairaland to blame the government.

My argument is not one-sided in case anyone wants to bash me. I admit that we have a silly government, but the citizens, especially youths are equally silly.

Some folks here claim that the US is a sane clime and wish to fly there at the slightest opportunity. Days ago, the same folks bashed the sane clime for the extrajudicial killing of Floyd.

The United States and other advanced nations welcome people who have something to offer. For now, a great percentage of Naija youths really have nothing to offer.

Let's try to build ourselves.

Why the shape of a penis? I feel this is a subtle insult to women all over the world. It says more about a mission when the people in charge choose to flaunt a giant penis to the world as if some sort of symbolism of male strength. I do agree that this is a misogynistic mission.

Clearly this person doesn't know anything about aerodynamics.

Elon is a Productive billionaire. That's what it should be. You make real money from solving problems and providing jobs.
Nigerians are rather turning billionaires by stealing public funds and they think they are truly rich. Money that didn't come from providing solutions is a curse on themselves and the country. It ruins the economy stealing funds that otherwise could have been used to provide capital infrastructure for development.

Can we see how things work in progressive societies. How the private sector can be set on an unlimited quest to develop a country. Countries that donot have the baggage of corruption, rent seeking and contract buccaneering masquerading as the so called 'Exclusive List'.

Now the world will flock to Space X's newly approved space park to experience galavtic adventures and massive revenues will be generated for the American economy. So, from being a deficit spender on space exploration throughout the NASA years, America can potentially be a net earner.

Can we see how a simple change in the structure of things can move a process, a moribund industry, even a country forward. If there were not visionary leaders in America, NASA will either be a damning drain pipe today or the country will have abandoned space for the east bloc.

Can Nigerian leaders insistent on the status quo and her hapless citizens see how prosperity is created, how countries are run. Now can we begin to think what to do with our big money guzzling, wasteful government companies, ventures, institutions and industries that need the right kind of structure, leadership and inspiration.

We are hardworking...but the kind of work we do is not the type of work that produces enough industrial output for 1) export 2)developing ourselves.

For instance, most Nigerians run businesses that basically import stuff and resell. That's a lot of hardwork, but overall it does not improve our GDP or our export potential...and infact makes us lose a lot of forex

Meanwhile, countries like the US,China, Japan, Germany, UK, etc are also 'hardowrking'...but the kind of work they do generates a lot of exportable industrial product.

Another thing...on the average 50% of us don't pay our power bills. As a result our power companies run at a loss...and this affects productivity overall.

Finally, Nigeria is lacking in technical education, and in the small scale technical companies that would produce the small parts that would help big things like a car or a rocket to run. We chase our children to unviersity to get a big degree so that they can sit in an office all day...and we laugh at our technicians....and don't fund technical educaiton adequately.

Yes, I can do hardwork .....but the question is what kind of hardwork, and to what end?

We are a nation of people who are not working to be productive. We are working to chop our money at the end of the day.

You seems not understand the Nigerian problem. Nigeria problem is structural. It has nothing to do with all the things you wrote there.
You remember the time of import substitute policy? Where did it leave us? Indigenisation policy, where did it leave us to? Structural adjustments policy, where did it leave us?
Every country in this world imports just like Nigeria.

Nigeria is a failed system. A failed system has nothing to offer anyone. In the next 30 years, you still come here to type the same exact thing if this failed state is allowed to continue to exist.

What’s the big deal in this launch? Russia has been providing shuttle to the international space station for over a decade, and without making a meal out of it and for much cheaper. Let’s pls put this event in perspective and not overreact.

The big deal is Russia space ship are still tied to the government.

USA have exited that business model and hand it to the private sector. SpaceX is the first to produce and launch a vehicle using this model, Boeing is also producing theirs.

USA want to use this model to open up space exploration and tourism to all Dick and Harry, who can afford the expensive ticket to fly into space, just like buying a plane ticket.

So, this is a big deal! I will not be surprise to hear that one Nigerian politician will be among the first to buy such a ticket and fly into space.

You can even now ‘own’ a space company and partake in a pierce of the windfall, by buying stocks of these companies, this has never been possible before until now.

it will take Nigeria a million years to get to this level. The problem isn't just the leaders, the average Nigerian has a really messed up psyche, if we'll ever get better the rehabilitation should begin from the masses.
Really messed up psyche bro. You see this kinda thread for instance, it will not go past six pages. If it's some shi!t on sex or romance, you'd see 20 pages within one hour. Issues like this don't interest an average Nigerian. We gon' remain incomparable to these whites for a long time. We ain't even anywhere close.

Nigeria is a failed system. A failed system has nothing to offer anyone. In the next 30 years, you still come here to type the same exact thing if this failed state is allowed to continue to exist.

All those policies you mentioned, they don't work when at the same time you are still overimporting, still dependent on revenue from oil , and still not investing in technical and vocational education, and so on.

Structural adjustment?? The result of our dependence on oil. When we took on SAP in 1986, oil prices were low, and not enough for us to continue our chop way of life. So it was SAP or an IMF loan at exorbitant rate.

Yes, all countries import...but the value of their imports, at least for the serious ones, does not exceed the value of their exports. Nigeria...and many African countries are in that trap....and that's why we end up taking loans, and having to endure SAP.

Until we make the hard decisions, and stop relying on oil....we won't prosper.

Structural? All African and Asian countries have structural issues. Most countries in the Third World are contraptions. And the sucessful ones are those that are productive. Not Nigeria where the big business, North or South, is to sell imported goods.

Good points however you must understand that these great achievements aren't being done in a vacuum. SpaceX is a private company and not government owned so this can't be attributed to the government.

Whenever the US or Soviets were researching spacecraft the primary aim was for military expansion, whatever advancements from that were later declassified and introduced to civilians like GPS.

Within the last 50 years NASA has scaled back missions to space because the government isn't interested in funding the programs that do not have immediate use to the military or business which allowed private companies like SpaceX to fill that gap.

So what I'm saying in essence is that if influential bodies (governments, businesses) give incentives for space exploration in Nigeria then we will see our own space program. We can not expect youths to build things just like that, even abroad it does not happen that way.

There's something phenomenal about the rise of Elon Musk, who, incidentally, is pushing for hyperloop as a mode of transportation. And Jeff Bezoz, he's been touted to be America's first trillionare.
