Senate President Ahmad Lawan on Monday lamented that Nigeria loses about $29 billion yearly to irregular and poor power supply.

Lawan disclosed this while declaring open an investigative public hearing on a motion titled: “Power Sector Recovery Plan and the Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic” organized by the Senate Committee on Power, in Abuja.

Lawan noted that Nigeria has spent N1.8 trillion on power since 2015 without anything concrete to show for it

He said that while he cannot call for outright reversal of the privatisation of the power sector by the Federal Government, there ought to a review of the exercise to stop huge financial losses to the Federal Government on a monthly basis.

He said that instead of the power situation in the country to improve after privatisation as expected, the prospects of the sector have continued to dim with attendant loses.

According to him, the Share Purchase Agreement between the Federal Government, Distribution Companies (DisCos), Generating Companies (GenCos), during the exercise is today responsible for Nigeria losing between N12billion and N15 monthly.

He insisted that Nigeria cannot be competitive or make sustainable progress without sustainable power.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, in her presentation agreed with Lawan that the power sector has failed to perform as envisaged from the privatisation exercise.

Zainab disclosed that the Federal Government has designed a Power Sector Recovery Programme (PSRP) consisting of a set of coordinated actions which when implemented in the next five years, are expected to reset the sector and place it on a sustainable development and growth trajectory.

Agencies at the public hearing were the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET), and the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE)

Even more than that

Let's get into deeper thinking...

Nigeria has run aground and there is no recovery, the only way this country can survive is a peg on birthrate, so its available infrastructure/resources can keep holding while it becomes excess overtime, which would propel employment and eradicate poverty. (eg, china one child policy that lasted 35 years 1980 - 2015, the period of Chinese boom)

We assume Nigeria was better in the past, it was not better, the resources and infrastructure could only sustain the then population alongside corruption and still have leftovers.. with comfort comes population.. that is why developed worlds dont joke with taxes, the richer you get, the higher you pay, so you never get comfortable to excess breed. But here, we barely have taxes and religious doctrines on birth control overshadows logic and common sense.

We bred much more than the resources and infrastructure could carry alongside our world renowned corruption (eg, The lawmaker with 24 direct children) .. now we are in a mess, because we barely have the resources and infrastructure we used to have when we were even assumed comfortable, but left with an unguarded massive population of a developed world.. (case study: how come Nigerians felt better on all ramifications during Obasanjo's admin despite oil sold at $21, Abacha's at $10 etc)

Am not a doomsayer, but The only and fastest way forward for Nigeria, is to go backwards. If we continue this way, we would only end up with a very terrible unabating civil conflict (insecurity, banditry, kidnapping, scammers, grandscale corruption and eventually maybe internal war from casting blames) when the centre can no longer hold because everyone would be scrambling for anything and everything (nepotism, lack of federal character) .. it's unfortunate these are already happening.

This is an understatement because you have to take into consideration those people who use generators and inverters to run their business in the absence of reliable power supply. Imagine the number of barbers and hairdressers, tailors and the likes.

But wait ooo, Does it cost a fortune To have a stable Power supply??

All those countries with steady Power, Did they do it magically??

$29billion alone can make us have a steady Power supply if properly used but then again, THIS IS NIGERIA!

Nigerian politicians and fraud are 5 and 6.

We all know the Senate is already planning some ridiculous pranks the moment we hear them talking like this.

The truth will be out within the next few hours or days.

More like $300 million monthly or weekly if we had small level like even Brazil. I am referring to the oyibo and sane people side of Brazil.

As of today, since 1900, no black populated nation is 30% satisfactory to me on many levels. And i don't say this with joy.

Nigeria is one of the first three countries that leads this disappointment; and light is one of the biggest reasons.

You cannot quantify the loss due to lack of power, stop deceiving yourselves.

Manufacturing or production is almost zero in Naija.

Manufacturing is not zero and it is not low because of power only.
That is just an excuse by clueless politicians and the public who can't face
the real issue.

Unsubsidized electricity will be as expensive as operating a generator.

If you want stable power, call for the end to power subsidy.
