Ive told you several times, you are fabricator of deception.

You will loose credibility if you continue to embellish genuine accomplishments with fantastic wishes and end up humiliating the subjects you are supposed to celebrate.

On his own, in 1962, that was a good achievement. That should be celebrated. Attaching lies to his position not only discredit you but it also takes away and diminishes his credentials.

No where in the newspaper report is it said that the man planned or originated national grid. Heading a planning dept doea not equate to designing a national grid that was already in place and working efficiently.

Read the attached. It shows that the national grid was complete and in operation before Mr Onyemelukwe.

If NNPC hires someone today and give them position of Design and Planning for Downstream, should a post be made 60yrs from now and call that person the designer of Nigerian refineries?

Im begiining to doubt you are Ibo....given the way you embarass their sons and bring them here to be openly ridiculed with every post. You speak Ibo but Im not sure Ibo blood runs in you. Same way Hausas and Fulani on facebook and Arewa blog are not able to detect Im Yoruba in our interaction online.

Please mention the difference??

Let's compare our leaders from the south and the North?

We've had past presidents from the south, how did the country fare better during their tenure?
During obasanjo's time as president, Nigeria's GDP grew at an average of 6%, one of the fastest in Africa. wink
Compare with Buhari's time as president when the GDP is hovering at an average of 1.5%. grin
Obasanjo is the author of at least two books, My Command, and My Watch.
I am not sure Buhari ever wrote a newspaper article. grin

Is that your threshold for intelligence?
Books hold a lot of secrets that can influence intelligence. A reading society is a leading society. wink
There was a documentary on Germany I would send you if I could find the link.
In the documentary, there was a discussion between a dutch artist and a German about leadership in Germany. The dutch said Germany would always be a leading country because no matter how dumb the average German politician is, at least he would have read no fewer than two books.
I hope you get the message. wink

ECN began making preliminary plans for a transmission network to link the power generating sites from Lagos with other commercial centers, in 1961, ECN completed a 132 KV transmission line linking Lagos to Ibadan via Shagamu, in 1965, this line was extended to Oshogbo, Benin and Ughelli to form the Western System.
In 1962, a statutory organization, the Niger Dams Authority (NDA) was formed to build and maintain dams along River Niger and Kaduna River, NDA went on to commission a 320MW hydro power plant at Kainji.

You did not counter my claim that nepotism was responsible for the appointments and not merit. Now, to the point you raised, can you avail of the research result with which you derive that conclusion that Yorubas study simple courses as compared with Igbos because even those you listed above, Yoruba has a good percentage of the people calling the shots there.

Nepotism!? Besides Ironsi who spent a brief spell as Head of State, was there ever a time a Igbo headed central gov’t to have been able to effect all the nepotism you accuse us of?

You do realise the colonial government were more interested in merit, results and who could do the job, hence the preponderance of Igbos in administrative and gov’tal positions when they left on 1st Oct’ 1960?

Your problem is, as you’re comfortable or prepared to accept Fulani hegemony and domination, for some funny reason you lot go ape and start dreaming up all kinds of conspiracy theories at the thought of Igbos equally heading top administrative, gov’tal or political positions! As we speak, the Fulani have taken over most if not all top positions in agencies and ministries whose operations are domiciled in your backyard, but i don’t see you expressing similar outrage!

Ndigbo are a ethnicity blessed by God, and it would serve you no purpose to keep on bellyaching over their successes in life while at the same time giving the Fulani a pass! Those appointments you mentioned, the appointees merited them! We could all see how, despite the purported corruption at the time, Nigerias’ economy was growing in leaps and bounds, until the Nzeogwu coup happened and the Fulani hegemony became firmly entrenched under the military and they brought everything under their control....things started heading south from then onwards!

Given the positions Igbo held in governance on the eve of ‘independence’ and also given the positions Igbo have held and are holding in international organisations, bodies and financial institutions (second to no other ethnic grp in Nigeria), i have no reason to believe the positions of which you mentioned were not merited!

The cities would be well developed, but the rural areas won't be well developed.

Also, there would be mass segregration, and disporprotionate spending on white settlers vs black settlers. Roads won't reach everywhere, and getting a hosptial in your region would involve a trip to the Colonial office in London.

Inasmuch as Nigeria could be better, I'm happy we got indepenedience. We are not developed because we are a resource dependent country, and we have refused to1) do the hard work to be an industrial economy 2) refused to charge high enough taxes. 3) run power , and oil and many other sectors as 'non profit making ventures'.

You basically described the Nigeria of today, but instead of white settlers it's the rich Africans and their foreign collaborators that are enjoying the benefits.

When it comes to striving by merit u must give it to the igbos this is why the nigerian state don't want to allow a level playing field for them cos they know that the other ethnic groups can't compete with them.

Stylized way of recommendation, but thanks anyway, I'm glad I looked it up.
I'm glad you took the trouble to look it up. George Orwell was one hell of a writer. But his most notable work isn't Animal Farm but a book titled 1984 written in 1948. cheesy
The name Big Brother came from that book, as well as the idea of people living under the watchful eye of Big Brother. Some people took that idea and name and turned it into a big reality show that many youths waste their time and emotion on today. Try to get a copy of 1948 by George Orwell. You won't be disappointed.

Engineer onyemelukwe is the owner of Colechurch of International Ltd ,he is from Nanka , Anambra state, his son, China Danfort onyemelukwe, one of the most prominent and important investment banker in Europe.

Today, Colechurch is active in 32 countries worldwide and has head office in London and a sub-head office in the US.

The group has an asset base of about $300m and annual turnover was $125m, the staff strength worldwide is 1,800 as at 2006.
Onyemelukwe has an impressive and perhaps, intimidating profile. He bagged an Engineering degree in 1956, from the University of Leeds and an Economics degree of London University in 1960. He has written and lectured widely on the power industry, economic development and growth.

Most of the grid was expanded in the 1970's...after the war.

Also the reason why our power system does not work is simple. We run it as a socialist enterprise, not as a capitalist enterprise.

Look at GSM. When GSM came to Nigeria, Obasanjo allowed them to exploit us well well. They came, and they charged us heavily for phone call, and bad service (I can recall when I got a repeated call from Lagos from a number I knew not between 9-10 pm in 2004...when I was trying to study for heaven's sake!)..and used the money to build up our structures.

Meanwhile for power, we 1) put it under government control from the word go. 2) charged bills that were kept low for the masses 3) overexpanded the grid for political purposes (people in the rural areas got power) 4) and then most Nigerians refused to pay for power. Between the polticiasation of power, and the fact that it was being not run as a profit making enterprise, the amount of cash needed to make things better wasn't enough.

Infact today, power is not run as a profit making enterprise. Discos and Gencos cannot set prices, prices are set by NBET....which means that all the DISCOS have been losing money since 2014. (and one even gave up in 2018...because they could no longer run at a loss). The grid is overexpanded. Banks and other financing angencies cannot give loans to the power sector. People are refusing to pay for power.

Yes, maybe we should have kept the man in office...but he won't have guaranteed power. The same problems would have happened, because power in Nigeria is not run for profit, and because Nigerians expect power for free.

Modified...

Thanks for all the replies.

From the replies, people are convinced that power should be 'very cheap' in Nigeria. The problem is, we are not earning enough from oil (and agriculture is not a potential money maker, no matter what people try to tell you)...so the only way to earn money for the power sector is by running it like a business.

Also, we need lots of money (one estimate put it at $900billion over 30 years...that's 30billion a year on power. Meanwhile our budget this year isn't even up to that). That's why we have to remove any price controls.

Before you abuse me, I should mention I lean socialist. I wish we could pay as low as N1000 per month for power, and N30 per liter for fuel. But that's not possible. DISCOS and GENCOS are private companies that employ thousands of Nigerians and if we don't pay enough for power, they won't have the money to make things better, and even pay their staff.

(Disclaimer=I don't work for the DISCOS or GENCOS. Until 3 years ago, I was paying estimated billing)

Excellent comment.
Do you think that one of those who won the war would have deregulated telecoms as Obasanjo did?
Is government ownership of the business not part of the war-winners bounty?

Absolutely right!

SLAP44:
10 points to note about this topic.

1. Onyemekukwe was a trained expert on electrical matters

2. He designed Nigerian electrical grid and was instrumental to running it till the war broke out

3. He must have fled Lagos like others

4. When he returned, his position has been given to one of those who won the war

5. The person who took his position might be a mediocre quota system figure head who is just occupying the position just because they won the war.

6. Electricity expansion and maintenance took a nose dive as the winner of the war took all money making positions and milked the nation dry.

7. Onyemekukwe got frustrated and left to form his own private company after the war, later got fed up as Nigeria continued to die in instalments, so he relocated abroad to allow Nigeria to die very well.

8. Till today Nigerian electricity is still wallowing in the wilderness with zero hope in sight.

9. Till we find good people that will forgive Nigeria and work with their whole energy and God given talents, Nigeria will continue to descend to Yemen levels.

10. That is the story of Nigeria.

I know it is normal for you to wake your parents with slap that is why vulgar language is common with you, but then make use of your sense now.
I posited that those people got those appointments through nepotism and not merit because the Igbos and their Hausa friends were in charge of Nigeria at least between 1959 and 1966 and your brother in the bid to counter my claim gave an extract from a write up showering encomiums on the Igbos. You would have added that the Premier of the then Eastern region Michael Opara and the ceremonial president Azikiwe escaped death during the coup because they were smart.

Can you give examples of such appointments so that i can explain to you that there was no nepotism.
