The month of July 2020 has been tough for Nigeria, as many of its famous citizens have died within a space of 31 days, throwing their loved ones and relatives into mourning.

Here is a list of famous Nigerians who died in July, 2020:
1. Jide Odekunle


The late Jide Odekunle was a former General Manager of the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASMRI).

He died on July 5, at age 53 of COVID-19 complications.

Jide served under former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration for 4 years and 11 months.

Before his death he was honoured the Bobagunwa of Egbaland.

2. Aminu Adisa Logun


The late Aminu Adisa Logun was the Chief of Staff to Kwara Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, said Logun died of COVID-19 complications, only few hours after result of test carried out on him returned positive.

He died on July 7, at the age of 73.

He was described as an industrialist, a public intellectual and an elder statesman.

3. Dr. Michael Adeyeri


Late Dr. Michael Adeyeri was a former chairman of the Ondo State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA).

He reportedly died of COVID-19 complications on July 9.

Adeyeri died at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, Ondo State.

4. Hon. Tunde Buraimoh

The Chairman, Committee on Information and Strategy of the Lagos Assembly, Tunde Buraimoh, died on July 10.

The late Buraimoh, who represented Kosofe Counstituency 2, was an active and eloquent member of the House.

Some of the lawmakers described Buraimoh’s death as a rude shock.

5. Tolulope Arotile


Arotile’s life and career was halted on Tuesday July 14, when, according to the Nigerian Air Force NAF, she was hit by the car of an Air Force secondary school classmate, who was reversing while aslo trying to greet her”.

Arotile was Born in 1995, She attended the Air Force Primary between (2000—2005), Air Force Secondary School between (2006—2011), both in Kaduna state . She got admitted into the Nigerian Defence Academy, Zaria on September 22, 2012 and was commissioned after her five-year programme.

In October 2019, she made history when she was decorated as Nigerian Air Force first female combat helicopter pilot in since Nigerian Air Force’s 55 years of existence.

An official press statement by the Nigerian Air Force says as of October 2019, Arotile had acquired 460 hours (about 19 days) of flight within one year and two months in flying a helicopter.

Arotile was a native of Iffe area of Ijumu LGA of Kogi State, a fourth child of her family.

6. Dr. Ezekiel Izuogu

Izuogu was a renowned scientist and inventor of Akokwa clan in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State.

According to family sources, the African foremost car inventor and manufacturer died on July 18.

He once contested for Imo Governorship Election. He was a BoT member of the All Progressives Party (APC).

In 1997, the Izuogu who is a lecturer at the Federal polytechnic Nekede designed and developed the Izuogu Z-600, the first indigenous manufactured car in Africa.

7. Mallam Ismaila Isa Funtua


Mallam Ismaila Isa Funtua, A former President of Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), died after driving himself to a hospital on July 20.

Funtua was born in January 1942, in Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State. He was a Minister of Water Resources in the Second Republic, in the late President Shehu Shagari administration. He was a member of the Constitutional Conference convoked by the late military Head of state who was highly regarded as a dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha.

Funtua until his death, was one of the most influential politician and businessman in the Nigeria.

In the early 1980s, he established The Democrat, an all-colour newspaper in Kaduna which became authoritative on political matters. His construction firm, Bulet, became a household after constructing the magnificent Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.


He was a life patron of the NPAN and also a patron of the International Press Institute (IPI). He attended the Commercial College in Zaria, Federal Training Centre in Kaduna, the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, the University of Manchester, and was the Monitor-General of Course 9 of the Senior Executive Course at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies.

8. Iya Jogbo 


A popular Max FM Lagos radio presenter, Emmanuella Pobeni Adepoju, popularly known as Iya Jogbo, died on July 24.

According to the management of TVC Communications, owners of TVC, TVC News and Max FM Lagos and Abuja, Iya Jogbo died after a brief illness from bronchitis and an enlarged heart.

She was popular with the Wetin Dey show on Max FM.

9. Adeola Osinuga


The wife of late singer Nomoreloss, Adeola Osinuga died on July 26, 2020.

Close relatives revealed that she died after battling a chronic ailment Fibromyalgia for over four years.

She was an On-Air Personality (OAP) with Rhythm 93.7 FM before she took ill.

It was gathered the ailment took a big toll, keeping her hospitalised and away from work.

10. AbdulGaniyu Folorunsho Abdul-Razaq


AbdulGaniyu Folorunsho Abdul-Razaq, became the second prominent person that died in Kwara state in the Month of July. He is the father of Governor kwara state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. He was a First Republic minister and ambassador to Ivory Coast. History has it that he is the first lawyer from Northern Nigeria.

He died on July 25, at the age of 93.

He was laid to rest at his Idi-Igba family house in Ilorin, Kwara State, in according to Muslim traditions.

11. Yusuf Satia


Satia was a popular Yoruba actor and singer.

He dies on July 21.

12. Chief Johnson Onuigbo


Chief Johnson Onuigbo, has been reportedly died on July 27.

He was the Abia State chapter chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Sources close to the family, said he died after a brief illness.

13. Major General Sam Momah (Rtd)

Major General Sam Momah (Rtd.), a former Minister of Science and Technology, died on July 29.

He died after complicated diabetic issues at the age of 77.

14. Pa Ayo Fasanmi


A prominent elder statesman and leader of Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-cultural group , Senator, Pa Ayo Fasanmi, died on July 30, at the age of 94.
