Finding a perfect pillow is a gateway to having your neck aligned to the rest of your body and your spine kept in a neutral position which supports a good posture. However, this comfort can be cut short if you do not take care of your pillow properly. It could result in frequent change of pillow, increase expenditure and loss of time spent searching for a perfect pillow. Yet, not everyone knows how to take care of their cherished pillow to provide years of relaxing comfort.

We understand that there are many kind of pillows, but this article does not limit to any pillow in particular. It is simply a general guide for a regular pillow. However, we encourage you to refer to the buyer’s guide for details on specific care.

Here are tips on how to take care of your pillow to enjoy years of relaxing comfort.

1. Get a pillow cover
Do you wish to extend the life of your favorite pillow Then you need to get a pillow cover ASAP. Pillow covers or pillow protectors do not only extend the life of a pillow by protecting against wear and tear, it also prevents fluids, moisture, dust mites, bed bugs and stains from permeating your pillow. It is recommended that you have at least two pillow covers for each pillow so you can have a change for each one.

2. Sun- Dry your pillow
When you think of a natural disinfectant for your pillow think of the sun. By hanging it on a clothesline, you expose your pillow to sunshine that can help kill dust mites. Also, it can help to eliminate smells from sweat or body odors that might stick to the pillow. Ensure you remove the pillow cover or protector before sun drying.

3. Wash your Pillow
Because our pillows do not need our permissions to touch our faces, experts have recommended that we wash our pillows 3-4 times yearly. Washing your pillow sounds like a herculean task and the thought of it can sap the energy needed to get the task done, but caring for your pillow not just the pillow case guarantees a germ-free and cleaner night rest each time you lay your head on your pillow. So here’s how to get started:

HAND WASH:
 Fill a tub or large washing basin with warm water.
 Add a mild detergent and mix it to lather. To prevent the water from been too foamy and the pillow from taking forever to dry up, add only
small quantity of detergent to the water.
 Soak the pillow for a period of 10- 15 minutes, rinse in enough water or directly under a tap and squeeze continually until satisfied.
 To ensure the pillow dries properly, lay it out on a flat, clean surface or hang it on a clothes line.

PS: ensure the pillow dries properly before slipping it into your pillow cover. You can also smell the pillow to detect moisture.
On the other hand, if your washing machine is big enough, then:

First, remove the pillow case, put your pillow(s) depending on the size of your pillow into the washing machine, add a mild detergent and adjust the settings on your washer to run on warm water, afterwards, you rinse.
place your pillow in the dryer and adjust settings to fit your pillow. Finally smell the pillow to be sure its dry and if not completely dry you can restart the drying process or sundry it. We hope this is helpful, we love to hear from you.

You could actually use cloth clips to hold them on a clothesline.
