The Peoples Democratic Party on Friday defied subsisting court orders and presented flags to Enugu State governor, Mr. Sullivan Chime, and his Abia State counterpart, Theodore Orji as the governorship candidates of the party in their respective states.

The party’s acting National Chairman, Haliru Bello, presented Chime and Orji with the flags at the PDP South-East campaign at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu. President Goodluck Jonathan and party stalwarts were at the gathering.

The two other PDP governors in the zone, Martin Elechi (Ebonyi) and Ikedi Ohakim (Imo) were also presented with flags as the governorship candidates of the party in their respective states.

There was, however, a brawl when some Anambra PDP leaders tried to stop the suspended National Vice-Chairman, South-East, Olisa Metu, who was ousted by the court, from presiding at the event.

Security men, however, bundled one of the protesting leaders into a patrol van while Metu moved to preside over affairs at the event.

Jonathan promised the people of the South-East a transparent government that would take care of their interests and Nigerians irrespective of language, tribe and religion.

Noting that the zone is home for all, he said Nigerians must have an equal opportunity and would not be discriminated against wherever they wished to do business.

He said, “We are here not to campaign, but to greet my people. This is the first zone we visited and the traditional rulers from the whole zone came to receive us.

“I thank APGA and other political parties that have adopted us. We are not campaigning. We are here to tell them what we stand for. We have several security challenges in the country. It looks like a global trend, acts of terrorism and extensive militancy.

“It is all over the world. May be it is a trend of history. In Nigeria too, we are having a little of it. We are assuring the people of the South-East that this kidnapping that does not allow business people to move about must be stopped.

“Business people are not stagnant. Business people must be mobile. We are saying that the interruption of businesses must come to an end.

“This is an industrial area. Let me assure you of the government’s commitment. You know that about N500bn has been released to enable people to get loans since banks are finding it difficult to grant such.”

He said that his administration was committed to power because it was vital to wealth creation, noting that in Enugu, the Federal Government had conducted a survey and signed a contract to establish coal to power plant.

[B]However, a former vice-president, Chief Alex Ekwueme, warned the PDP to be cautious about its campaign in the South-West zone, saying, “From the outset, we have never had it so good in the South-West. We scored zero per cent in 1999 and won controversially in 2003.[B]”

He said, “If we must convincingly win in the zone, then we must go back to the drawing boards.”

SE is in big trouble for the next 4 years. APGA has pledged to support Jonathan. If Jonathan's display of leadership and following laws is based on what happened at this rally then SE has to. Manage suffering again for the next 4 years. SE is virgin land for ACN and CPC. I see them doing very well, if they do things right and transperent in the SE. PDP is hell bent on destroying themselves.
