State police, the answer to insecurity in Nigeria
Following the increased spate of insecurity in Nigeria, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has advocated state police, insisting that unitary police system cannot provide adequate security for Nigerians and their property.

Ekweremadu, who spoke at the weekend in a lecture he delivered at Enugu State Sports Club Complex insisted that the unitary police system had failed Nigeria. He said his stand on the imperative of state police in Nigeria had never been hidden because “it is not just a security issue but touches also on the character of federalism, especially the devolution of powers between the center and the peripheries.”

His words: “Instructively, I am not alone on this matter. Even the ordinary Nigerians appreciate the fact that unitary police system has not and cannot provide adequate security for Nigerians and their property. At present, the 1999 Constitution provides for a single Nigeria Police Force. Section 214(1) of the Constitution says, “there shall be a police force for Nigeria, which shall be known as Nigeria Police Force and subject to the provisions of the this section, no other police force shall be established for the federation or any part thereof.

“Sub Section 2 of the Section 215 provides that, “The Nigeria Police Force shall be under the command of the inspector general of police and contingents of the Nigeria Police Force stationed in a state shall, subject to the authority of the inspector general of police be under the command of the commissioner of police of that state.”

He lamented that even in a situation where the state was burning “under his/her nose, the so-called chief security officer cannot marshal directives to a divisional police officer because the later has to clear with the assistant inspector-general (AIG) in charge of his/her zonal command. The AIG must in turn clear with the inspector general who would also clear with the commander in chief while things get out of hand.”

He stated that it was no longer news that the centralised police force was disgustingly understaffed, lamenting the situation where a population of about 140 million people was policed by less than 400,000 policemen and women “ is to say the least, a recipe of disaster and definitely miles off the internationally acceptable benchmark.”

Nigeria is not mature enough for state police.

So, forget it. It will only lead to chaos.
