Only here to hope that the completion of this factory would herald production of steel suitable to construct railway lines. We need to start weaning ourselves off this reliance on import and influence especially by China with their subtle 'Belt and Road Initiative'. 1 Like |

Na today? As far back as 1993, prof in UI told us ajaokuta can never work as the cost of steel produced there will never be competitive in price. Imports will always be cheaper. 2 Likes |

Omooba77: Your problem is comprehension. When the facility was built it was 99% completion the only unit remaining for commissioning was the blast furnace , after many years of abandonment Buhari government start renovation of the plant, this 90% remaining is the renovation phase. Or rather revamping phase. Take a trip to ajokuta still is in NIGERIA you don't need Visa. 1 Like |

Lies. The place has always been 90% completed. The truth is the place will never be completed. https://www.thecable.ng/ajaokuta-steel-plant-90-complete-says-ben-bruce Meanwhile, Ajaokuta has a Central Maintenance facility comprising of a foundry, forge shop, machine shops and fabrication unit which can be commercialised. I know of a company that once gave them a job which should ordinarily take a few days to complete but surprisingly, it took them over 9 months to do the job. The place is currently being run like a typical ministry and by civil servants. What the place needs to move are patriotic government policies, as well as business & engineering ideas. Not more money, at least for now. |

The stubborn insistence on continuing to throw money at white elephants like Ajaokuta and the NNPC refineries is all the proof one needs that most Nigerian leaders have absolutely no understanding of basic economics: some projects are simply not worth spending more effort on, no matter how much time and effort one might already have spent on them, and to continue regardless is to fall victim to the sunk cost fallacy. Even if Ajaokuta were to be magically completed tomorrow, it will never ever make a profit. The Soviet-era technology in it was already obsolete back in 1983 when Shagari was boasting about its impending completion, and since then Chinese steelmakers have been driving even the biggest and most advanced American and European steelmakers into bankruptcy, even before the COVID-19 crisis killed demand for steel. Under such circumstances, there is more likelihood of a random Nigerian jumping in the air and touching the moon than there is of this ridiculous money-pit ever justifying spending even one more dollar on it. The money would be better spent on improving primary and secondary education, so that more Nigerians would have the requisite knowledge to see announcements like this one for the follies they are. 2 Likes |

What did the Bible tell us in proverbs 13:12 about long hope?? Go and read it, the fact is people are tired of this country, I particularly I get so annoyed when I see any news about Nigerian government making promises, I swear you cannot imagine how angry I get when I see any news that has to do with Nigerian government,I don’t even read them anymore because I am fed up. For the fact that you are a Nigerian, be optimistic and speak well of your country. If not for you, for your posterities. Why all these negativities about Nigeria by some despicable Nigerians? Even if one leaves Nigeria for another country, will one be able to leave with all one's families! It's high time we shun all these negativities about Nigeria, FOR THE SAKE OF POSTERITY[/quote] |

The real question is, “What part of the plant is that figure referring to?” I worked in AJaokuta steel and I can tell you that the phase 1 of the plant was 98% completed as early as 1990s. Nigerians should learn to ask for details before jumping into excitement from government speeches. First, the primary units are what we need to start i.e 1. the Blast Furnace ( the big fat hot pot that turns Itakpe’s processed iron ore + Enugu’s processed coal & Mfamozing’s processed lime) to pig iron. 2. The steel making shop that turns the molten pig iron to steel + the Continuous casting Machine that casts the molten steel to blooms and billets sizes. 3. All the supporting plants inside Ajaokuta that make 1 & 2 above work ( sintering plant, coke oven plant, lime plant, air separation plant, water plant, waste heat recovery plant, rubberizing plant, foundry, etc just to name a few ) need to start up. 1 & 2 above are not ready ( at around 95% completed but the key technology was withheld by the Russians at exit) and are needed to drive the mining of coal, limestone and iron ore in the country. The secondary units of the 4 rolling mills namely 1. Billet mill, 2. Medium Section Structural Mills 3. Light Section Mills 4. Wire Rod Mills ...have only 3 & 4 working economically by importing billets but have now stopped . 1 & 2 have been tested only but never economically worked. All rolling mills are idle. All of the above is just phase 1 of the project which was planned for 1.2 million tons of liquid steel per annum for structural rods and profiles only. Phase 2 (~3.6M tons of liquid steel) for pipe and Phase 3 (~5.4M tons of liquid steel) for flat sheet. Around these figures. That’s a total of 10.2M tons of liquid steel per annum planned for phase 1 to 3 and not 1 gram has been produced. So the minister should tell us which one is 90% completed. 1 Like |

This is what amazes me about these ignorant and misoinformed critics running their mouth. The love and voted for the same people that abandoned the project and siphoned all the funds, they love and voted for the same people that abandoned Warri Itakpe rail line that was supposed to transport raw materials to the plant for 30 years, it's like building airport without run way, but they are here acting holy and concerned, they are shedding their usual fake crocodile tears. Were you lying hypocrites ranting on NL or anywhere when Warri Itakpe railway was abandoned for 30 years or you just didn't know the importance when it comes to this plant? Did you question your PDP uncles and Jona what they did for 16 years to advance this project or even complete this important railway that we need to make this plant work. Thank God, we have sensible and competent people in charge today, the railway is completed, now it can transport the needed raw materials to the plant. Your fake and hypocrite crocodile tears means nothing, it's just a reflection of your hatred for Nigeria and the people in charge today. By God's grace, we shall all witness the commissioning and functioning of this massive industrial revolution project. I thank PMG for engaging the Russians to complete the project once and for all, something the useless looting and stealing past administration refused to do, their main concern was looting and stealing. |
