The Christian Association of Nigeria has rejected the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020, “because it would snuff life out of the church and rank the church as a secular institution under secular control.”

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had on August 7 signed into law, the Companies and Allied Matters Bill, 2020. The bill which has been passed by the National Assembly replaced the 1990 CAMA.

The Christian body described as “satanic”, section 839 (1) and (2) of the law which empowers the supervising minister “to suspend trustees of an association (in this case, the church) and appoint the interim managers to manage the affairs of the association for some given reasons.”

The PUNCH had earlier reported that the Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Dr David Oyedepo, had also advised the Federal Government to expunge the part of the law that gives the minister the power to remove the board of trustees of churches without recourse to the court.

CAN in a statement signed on Thursday by Adebayo Oladeji, Special Assistant on Media and Communications to CAN President, Rev Samson Ayokunle, noted that the Federal Government has declared war on the church if it moved on to implement the law.

The statement was titled, ‘Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) rejects CAMA Completely.’

The statement read in part, “The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria rejects outrightly the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020 that was assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari recently.

“The law, to say the least, is unacceptable, ungodly, reprehensible, and an ill-wind that blows no one any good. It is a time bomb waiting to explode.

“While we are not against the government fighting corruption wherever it may be found, yet we completely reject the idea of bringing the church, which is technically grouped among the NGOs, under control of the government. The Church cannot be controlled by the government because of its spiritual responsibilities and obligations.”

CAN queried, “How can the government sack the trustee of a church which it contributed no dime to establish? How can a secular and political minister be the final authority on the affairs and management of another institution which is not political? How can a non-Christian head of government ministry be the one to determine the running of the church? It is an invitation to trouble that the government does not have power to manage.”

It advised the government to “face the business of providing infrastructure for the people. Let them focus on better health provision, food, education, adequate security employment, etc. The government should not be a busy body in a matter that does not belong to it. The government does not have the technical expertise to run the church of God because of its spiritual nature.”

“If the government is bent on imposing a law on us which the entire Church in Nigeria is against, then, they have declared war on Christianity and the agenda to destroy the Church which we have spoken against before now is coming to the open more clearly. If you cannot give us good amenities of life, we would not allow you to take away our liberty to worship our Maker,” it vowed.

CAN, therefore, called on Buhari to “stop the implementation of the obnoxious and ungodly law until the religious institutions are exempted from it” and “return the law to the National Assembly for immediate amendment.”

This is one way through which strange practices could be imported into the body of Christ. A canal mind cannot understand the things of the spirit. The Christian body needs to write the presidency as well as the law makers.

I am just thinking aloud. Is this new law not affecting Muslims too?

Why is MURIC not protesting? What if this law was introduced during Jonathan regime? How will MURIC react if Jonathan signed a law that gave government the authority to remove the Imams of any mosque?

Would CAN oppose this law if it was enacted during Jonathan's regime?

The fact is that religious inclinations has blocked the rational thinking of most Nigerians.

My honest take is that people should have the freedom to practice their religious beliefs without discrimination or government interference.

If you are a Muslim or Christian, do you call those who practice traditional religion derogatory names like pagans and idol worshippers?

Religion is really the "weed"" of the people!

Rejecting the new law in the media won't have any effect. The new CAMA is now a law that must be complied with by all afeected parties. If CAN feels that the law violates the fundamental and constitutional right of its members, they should go ahead and challenge the legality of the law in a court of competent jurisdiction. Anything other than that is just empty noise.

The Government of the Day should be apply wisdom , Take off their Hands from the Church and not make Mockery of themselves..

It's Unbiblical! Unscriptural , Demonic , Occultic and Satanic..

The Presidency should be well advised! You don't Start a War you Cannot Finish.

It's Foolishness to think or try in any Form to Fight against the Church of God.

It Foolishness to start a Fight against your Creator.

It Does not End Well...

Haman Tried it
Pharoah Tried it
Nebuchadnezzar Tried it..

We are Still in the Seasons of Judgement. Many Have Gone!

Any Mere Creature that Tries will Go like Others..

Govt can control churches. CAN should shut up or are they just waking up to see this coming? The court is there for us. Those who made that law includes Christians, even the VP is a lawyer/pastor.... But Govt should fear the supreme judgement of God over their obvious discrimination /disparity /favouritism over one religion than the other.

To those quoting me, let put the bible aside and let me ask if your pastor is above the government or an Oyedepo, Adeboye, Okogie,... can stand up and say he is above PMB? Let's learn as an Heavenly minded Christian to balance the respect for our Leaders. The disparity by Nigeria government in the way they handle matters relating to Christian vs Muslim is another thing entirely that obviously known to all. The day your pastor or preacher start lashing words not supported by the Bible against the leader, pls pick your bible and leave the church.

The poster above is making a point as a Christian.

Romans 13:1-7
1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. 6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

1 Peter 2:13-17

13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 15 For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people. 16 Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. 17 Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.

The churches brought this upon themselves.

There are many muslim communities just like Zakzaky group in North. They mind their business and never get involved in govt issues. Zakyzaky stays in govt business all the time. Thats why he is in trouble now.

Jonathan set a bad precedence when he will have these pastors meddling govt business. They got too comfortable and started commenting on what govt is doing or not doing. When you are a tax exempt organization, stay away from govt the best you can. Put a long distance between you and govt. Govt has all the rules and ways to fvk up anyone, if they choose to. These churches did same thing Zakyzaky did, started fvkng with govt. So now govt wants to fcvk with them too. Its unfortunate but its reality.

There is a pastor in America called Pastor Dollar or something like that. He used to condemn govt and live large and flaunt. One of their legislators got on his case and wanted to probe him and his church. The Pastor got the message at that point.

If CAMA can bring out same result in Nigerian pastors it will be great. The money they waste on acquiring jets and building for-profit private institutions should be better used in promoting wellbeing and supporting needs of communities and people. At the end of it people benefit when churches come to their aid in time of distress and need.

That why we said Buhari is Evil, if not that this stupid law is against Christianity He would never sign it into law. I have said it so many times that what matters to Muslims both Hausa fulani or Yoruba Muslims is Islam and not development or betterment of the so called Nigeria.

Stop using big big English to communicate daft ideas.

Govt is a system where individuals are entrusted with power to manage what the people share in common. Their is no human being that isn't entitled to meddle with govt happenings. People didn't vote pastors to ministry they vote politicians to power and so have right to ask politicians to improve. Ministers (Men of God) on the other hand are called by God and it is up to you to accept them or not. It is cataclysmically stúpid to try and stand as a third party in the relationship between members and church leadership.
